  1. Magna Vista 36 Carroll County 13 Final
  2. If a kid will work his butt off in the weight room, he will probably work hard on the field. Football players (and teams) need speed, strength, power, quickness, and mental toughness to succeed. A good weight program can definitely help develop these five aspects, and yes it will help win some games. Can the kid get the job done on the field, is the real question.
  3. Farewell, coach Troy Wells Thursday, May 1, 2008 Martinsville High School has just lost one of its best role models for our youth. Coach Troy Wells spent 29 years here working with the boys varsity basketball teams. First as an assistant coach and then as the head coach. He was a Christian and conducted himself as one. As a teacher and coach, he was a disciplinarian; and it showed in the teams he placed on the basketball court. He expected his players to conduct themselves as MHS Bulldogs; and they were expected to carry on the long tradition of winning district, regional, and state basketball championships. I am thankful that my son had the opportunity to have been on the Bulldog team when Wells was an assistant coach. My son is 37 years old now and living in Roanoke. He has attempted to catch the Bulldogs when they were playing a game in Roanoke and a chance to see his former coach. I still hear quotes that were uttered by coach Wells to the teams of the late 1980s. His influence lives on in this 37-year old basketball, baseball, and football coach now volunteering in Roanoke County. Thanks coach Wells for your example and good influence. It is such a shame that Wells was driven to seek a coaching position elsewhere because the clock was ticking and coaching positions were being filled in other school systems. He was led to believe that he could retire from teaching and still coach the Bulldogs. Re-applying with a May 2 deadline and May 12 decision is a bit late, don’t you think? His strong desire to work with young men left him no choice but to continue that wish somewhere else. The Martinsville City School System needs to re-evaluate its policies before they drive away teachers, coaches and valuable volunteers, such as Lorrie Teegen (cheerleading coach). They also need to examine why they cannot purchase the necessary uniforms and equipment for the high school teams but can afford a $25,000 raise for the superintendent. This year the MHS Booster Club has been called upon to furnish necessities as well as other items that were routinely furnished by the school system. They have even received requests for things that were not necessities. The Booster Club’s goals in the past have been to supply the extras such as state championship rings, rewards for exemplary accomplishments, trophies, appropriate pre-game meals for players before games, awards banquets and refreshments for awards ceremony receptions, and other items that were not being supplied by the system. It is difficult to find volunteers in the younger generation who will give of their time and money. Most of the Booster Club consists of men and women who are retired and whose sons and daughters have moved out of the area. I certainly hope that recent actions by the school board and administration do not impact these people who have willingly given so generously to support the teams and coaches of Martinsville High School. [ QUOTE ] nothin againest steve he is one of my good friends but i think carper needs to have about 7 to 10 more carries then steve. [/ QUOTE ] That didn't matter against Martinsville. They shut the offensive line down and your backfield.
  6. [ QUOTE ] how is that Number 2 kid doing?? he got hurt pretty badly...looked like maybe an ankle or knee... [/ QUOTE ] No, just cramps. We had a couple of guys with cramps out their tonight.
  7. I didn't say Graham will not be ready, I know they will be ready. I just didn't want some of you to think Martinsville will be a "walk in the park". I have a lot of respect for Graham. You guys are fundementally sound up front and get after it. Can't wait till Saturday night. It should be a good one.
  8. And the Bulldogs are looking forward to showing they are "for real" also. The dogs will be ready to play. Strap it on boys.
  9. Sorry Sandman Martinsville has never ran the wing T, and that is a fact. It might have looked that way , but it wasn't.
  10. Well, you can definately see there is not many from the Bluefield area that knows anything about Martinsville this year. This is a different team than last year and there is a whole different mentality. I don't want to say too much to quick, but some of you will be in for a rude awakening Saturday evening at Mitchell stadium.
  11. You guys better worry about the rest of the season and not focus so much on one game. Graham was better this year, so what. Gentleman, you're going to see a very good football game this Saturday night at Mitchell Stadium. Two very physical teams will be going head-to-head.... Bulldogs and the G-Men.
  12. I would just like to commend the Tazwell's girl soccer team on being very classy and ladylike individuals. Our athletic director at Martinsville, Bill Scheib said that they were very nice and polite after the game (when he was handing out drinks and food for the team)and had nothing to say but nice things about them. That speaks very well for your school, coaches, and team members. Good luck to you all in the Regional finals.
  13. Wake Forest has a great offensive line camp. Saturday June 10, 2006. $50 per camper. Go to Wake Forest website to get info.
  14. You gotta be kiding. Bassett already handed it to Carroll. SWD cannot keep up with the PD speed. That's been proven before.
