  1. Thank you GMan for all the hard work and providing everyone with a well run and entertaining site. It will definitely be missed!
  2. The Reid Sturgill era will begin at home against county rival Marion. Its a good rivalry and always brings in a big gate.
  3. I am just glad to see the county schools to be in good shape. I think Interstate 81 has contributed to help Washington, Smyth, and Wythe counties financially with industries wanting to be located near the interstate. My intent was definitely not to disrespect anyone or any schools in SWVA as our whole area is well represented in academics and athletics. I personally love the area we live in and I appreciate this website that you have kept running for years now. We have brought back several state titles and in multiple sports and I'm also glad to see a SWVA school in Graham become the standard for 2A football.
  4. Has the Chilhowie schedule been posted or did I miss it?
  5. I remember Washington County being one of the lowest paying counties around when it came to teacher pay. Fast forward twenty years and Washington County has become one of if not the highest paying counties. Academics and athletics seem to be flourishing as a result. I've seen some good teachers and coaches leave nearby counties to make their way into Washington County. Also it seems as if they scored a huge victory in hiring Keith Perrigan as their new leader in Director of Schools. Personally, I have never met the man however one of Mr. Perrigan's good friends told me he would bring continued success to the county as he is a former coach and values the coaching profession. I wish them all the best as I do know several of the school board members and they are really good people.
  6. I don't know the man personally but I do think it was a great hire for Lebanon. Many people credit him for building up the Honaker program and bringing it much success over the past 10-15 years. For those in the know why did Honaker never hire him as the head coach when he was such an intregal part of the program.
  7. Since the VHSL released the last set of numbers. The new numbers are based on grades 9-11 not 9-12. Go to the VHSL website and you can find the enrollment and Classification for all schools. This might help somewhat. Got it from the VHSL website. Graham 393 Page County 375 Luray 371 Central - L 367 Grayson County 364 Lebanon 363 Randolph-Henry 360 James River - B 359 Riverheads 357 Mountain View (Q) 355 George Wythe-W - 353 Westmoreland - Class 1 348 Buffalo Gap 346 Fort Chiswell 331 Brunswick 324 Giles 323 Rappahannock 316 Chilhowie 315 Graham accomplishes a lot to be one of the smallest schools in Class 2 and they don't run from competition. Only 29 kids between Graham and Grayson enrollment.
  8. Grayson County is playing a lie in all honesty. They are allowed to stay Class 1 with an enrollment of 364 which is larger than Lebanon and Riverheads. You can cry travel hardship all you want but that is totally not the reason for wanting to stay in Class 1. They don't want to compete with the bigger boys is what it comes down to. Do you really think they should be allowed to play down with teams like Twin Springs, Twin Valley, Bland, Castlewood, Rye Cove, Hurley, Bath County, Craig County to name a few. Go where the numbers put you or or why have Classifications? I think it took 3 appeals for them to stay down. Graham's numbers are only 393. Grayson will dominate in Class 1 and think they have accomplished something. It will be tainted and an asterisk should be placed beside their name.
  9. Twin Springs? Otherwise a very competitive schedule.
  10. Daddy ball has destroyed several programs around this area.
  11. I've heard Mark Palmer could be interested along with former Chilhowie and Patrick Henry defensive coordinator Billy Testerman. As for the current assistants, I could see maybe two applying for the job. Chilhowie is an inviting job with the tradition it has then add in that it is the largest school in 1D. Those two things alone usually equal success on a yearly basis. I'm sure whoever gets the job will be a good candidate and some good coaches will be turned away. Good luck to whoever gets the job!
  12. Coach Robinson did a good job and took pride in what he did. He always had his teams prepared and he has given Chilhowie everything possible that God put in him and he will continue to do so as AD. Honestly I think he was starting to get some burn out which happens to all coaches. The man has been going strong for 25 years. Good job Coach Robinson!
  13. It was rumored Smyth County might have two head coaching positions come available but nothing has happened yet. Again rumors are rumors until something officially happens. Coaches put a lot of time in and deserve every penny they make as they are away from their families quiet a bit. I saw an article in the Bristol paper several years ago where Smyth County was the highest paying SWVA county in coaching supplements. Looking at this years county salary scale on their website head football pays around $7,000 to $8,000 and head basketball pays around $6,000 to $7,000 depending on number of teaching years and not coaching years. BasebalI on the other hand pays significantly less with a set stipend of $1,960. Again most coaches coach for the love of the game and not money as you're definitely not going to get rich by no means. Does any other county pay more?
  14. Unfortunately a FEW administrators don't want to do anymore than they have to but they want every bit of their paycheck.
  15. CCC is a beast. Power, speed, heart, and what other positives you want to add in. What I like the most about this young man is that he seems to be all class .... A class act it seems on and off the field. Clements is a great player also. Any coach would be blessed to have either one.
  16. No not the girls program. Rumor was he was running an AAU program and got a few good transfers for the boys program. One was about 6'8 can't remember his name but I think he went on to play college ball somewhere. I remember another one about 6'4 I think his last name was Anderson. Don't know much about the girls program other than they have one heck of a coach who has been very successful.
  17. Happy for this young man. Hope he finds much success at the next level.
  18. GW will be a handful for anyone on their schedule. Seem to be getting back to the GW of old now in both football and basketball.
  19. Yes really. Did he go on to coach at a local college? Southwest maybe? It didn't seem to be a secret. Honaker has always been mostly competitive in all sports on a yearly basis. Thats a credit to the kids, coaches, and the community. Honaker had a solid run of athletes and lost to Altavista in both football and basketball. Juan Thornhill played for Altavista during this time frame. I think of Coach Hubbard when I hear someone mention Honaker. Seems like he coached there forever.
  20. Remember the Boyd man that built Honaker up into a powerhouse about 5-7 years ago bringing in transfers through the AAU circuit. There was definitely some talent there then. His kids have graduated and the program is still pretty good but not what it was when he was involved.
  21. They have a lot of size and are the only Class 3 school in SWVA so its definitely a good possibility.
  22. Awesome! You are exactly right. I admire what Graham has accomplished. They have become of one of the most consistent programs in the whole state. They are going to be bringing home another state championship trophy come Saturday.
  23. Chilhowie is one of the bigger Class 1 schools. They had a once in a lifetime team a few years back that lost to Riverheads in back to back state championship games.
