It can be argued though. Gate City beat Richlands at Ernie Hicks last year and will play them at Legion this year. Both teams return basicaly the same players from last season and both have made improvements. Richlands has got some good transfers in and GC has some really good young talent coming in to help with depth. I dont know much about the rest of the teams but right now I would have to say GC and RHS are tied at #1 with the August 27 winner keeping that spot. I have seen some GC teams in the past that should go 10-0 blow up and do nothing. I have also seen GC teams like last years that should go 6-4 or 7-3 do well and go 9-1 in regular season play or even 10-0. Three teams that come to mind are 2001, 2007, and 2009. In 2001 GC won the Region Title when most counted them out, In 2007 they played in the State Title game beating two teams in the playoffs that beat them impressively in the regular season, and 2009 winning games the fans never thought possible.

Dont matter. I think of those WVA teams as locals anyways. That makes 97 even more impressive!

1997 was probably the best year I have ever known for SWVA Football. D1 State Champ Appalachia D2 State Champ Powell Valley D3 State Champ Gate City D4 State Semi Appearance Lee High The two single a champs could have beat anyone D1 through D4 by one to two TDs that year. Heck both did do that to the D3 state champ that year. In 2007 Gretna could have won the State Title against anyone D1 through D4 and probably give the other two Divisions a run for their money.

All the teams mentioned by Viva held their own in AA. Gate City had played William Campbell in 94 for the D3 State Semi Final game.

The Watcher thinks Single A teams are inferior to AA teams.

I forgot about Harlan County. That is a good model to look at. I remember deer hunting over there when the talk first started about them (HC) consolodating. Most I talked to opposed it but it is doing very well since its opening.

Maybe Salem should try and play some of these little Single A teams around here. I garuntee they would not want to for long.

Lee High would be one to look at. Alot of travel time on buses there.

I can vouch for that. It is not easy to do and very time consuming. I have been doing the pickem on the CMD board since it was opened.

I am trying to find out some info on it. They usually start that Jamboree around 5 oclock. Will have to get my wife to leave work early that day so I can get there. As soon as I can find out everything I will post it.
