  1. Someone said on the CMD forum that they think the regular season district champs get the #1 seed going into state and the district tourney champs or runners-up get the #2 seed and there wouldn't be any games played for region d.

  4. This is all from the CMD forum. There are some games missing, but I think the standings are pretty much set. Boys: Gate City 10-0, 14-0 John Battle 7-2-1, 10-3-1 Virginia 3-3-3, 3-7-3 Lee 2-7-1, 2-10-1 Honaker 1-5-1, 2-7-1 Lebanon 1-7, 2-9 Girls: Gate City 10-0, 14-1 John Battle 6-2, 6-5 Virginia 5-5, 7-6 Honaker 3-4, 4-5-1 Lee 2-8, 3-9 Lebanon 1-7, 1-9 I think the CMD district tournament will be played at Sugar Hollow Park (for boys and girls) next week, Tuesday May 31-Thursday June 2. I don't know how the region d tournament would work since there's only one district. Could be that the two teams going to state (regular season champs and district tournament champs/second place) might play a game to see who gets the number one and two seeds going to state. Anyone know how if this is right? I keep forgetting what they do at this point every year, lol.
  5. I gotcha. Hard to understand people sometimes when it's just typed words. But you are right about community college. It's a lot of fun and you learn a lot of interesting things, but it's really just an extension of high school. Actually, Highlands felt to me like high school without the SOL's (which was a lot better than regular high school with SOL's).

  7. Now I remember, it was the Centralia High School Orphans. They call the boys teams Orphans and the girls teams Annies.
  8. I saw an Internet article on weird mascots and one school had two mascots, one for the boys and one for the girls. I'm thinking the girls mascot was something like the Raggety Anne doll and the boys was the male doll (can't remember names). I'll see if I can find that article.
  9. I don't appreciate that very much (the VI comment). I'm a senior there in the art and education programs. VI has a great reputation as a teacher education school and graduates from there come highly recommended for teaching jobs. Not to mention we're nationally ranked in our equine program. It might seem easy to get in at VI, but you have to remember that MANY of the students (almost everyone I know) transferred in from a community college and Virginia's governor signed a bill a while back guaranteeing admission for transfer students. Most of the freshmen at VI that didn't transfer got in on scholarships like for sports. Also, I went to VHCC for two years before I transferred to VI. It's not that bad, but it is like the 13th grade, lol.
  10. That's the one that caught my attention the most. I was wondering if maybe it was just worded badly or wrong, or if they are actually serious. Soon, QB's are going to have it easy and still be the best paid players. Defenses might as well just forget about sacking the QB unless he decides to keep the ball and run.......until he starts the act of sliding of course.

  12. I think this is it...had to find out which videos on YouTube were his Cairo speech and which were his latest Middle East speech (I didn't know anything about it until today while reading this board).

  14. Watching the game last night, I actually learned some new names for the Heat other than Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, lol. If they can get their heads all the way in the game on defense and keep pushing the other guys on the team, they could very well go all the way. But I'm still pulling for my Bulls no matter what. Just imagine what it'll do the Lebron and the others' egos if they win?
  15. The last game kinda surprised me. I knew it would be a lot closer in the end than the last game where the Bulls won by 20 (can't remember the exact score), but I didn't see the Bulls losing on their own court by 10. Could be a couple of rough games for the Bulls in Miami. As for Lebron James, I'm really not a fan. He's an extremely talented player, but there's just way too much hype surrounding his teaming up in Miami. I think the thing that bothers me most isn't necessarily James himself though, but the fact that everyone thought it would be the super team with James, Bosh, and Wade, but we've seen how it's gone so far. This was the first time they beat the Bulls this season if I'm not mistaken. They could still turn into the best team in the league next season, but everyone thought they should just give up because the Heat was going to go undefeated in their first season with these guys (except for Rose and the Bulls of course ;) ).
  16. So it looks like it'll be the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks in the Western championship and the Chicago Bulls have already taken a one game lead against the Miami Heat in the Eastern championship. Did anyone else see the Bulls/Heat game last night? Basically one point game until the 4th and the Bulls took it by 21 points. I wonder if Lebron and the others cried after this loss to the Bulls too? lol.
  17. Going by the enrollment numbers given on the VHSL Powerpoint for the new system: Powell Valley (540) + Appalachia (223) = 763 J.J. Kelly (468) + Pound (241) = 709 Coeburn (416) + Saint Paul (161) = 577 So, no I don't think they'll be AA next year.
  18. Lost to Providence Academy in their first meeting 1-0. Beat them the second game 3-1.
  19. You're exactly right about SOL's limiting teachers. I forgot about that, which is probably the biggest reason most teachers (that I know anyway) hate standardized testing. Also, another thought just occured to me. For the teachers who aren't "on the ball", maybe most of them are older and this will push them to retire, opening up jobs for fresh, new teachers (which would be good for me, lol).
  20. It's sad that so many people are wrapping up politics in this. I only had to read a few comments on the news article before I was just sick. Some people seem to think that the federal government won't give SWVA aid just because of our elected officials. I don't know why they denied us assistance, but surely it wouldn't be because of some politicians not liking others. That's just wrong. I would think that it was because we weren't hit nearly as bad as places like those in Alabama and they believe the Commonwealth can handle this on its own, allowing the federal government to give more to those harder hit places.
  21. I didn't mean that Skinner, Pavlov, Thorndike, or Watson's work wasn't important or in no way connected to education. I was using their work as examples of different educational theories and that they were mainly theorizing on education in general, not coming up with specific plans for teaching in schools. Also, by statistics mean nothing, I meant that if people take statistics too seriously, we come up with cookie cutter models for education. There are better ways to teach than using cookie cutter models and assuming all students are the same. This is why I'm completely against standardized testing like the SOL's. Some students just aren't good test takers. They can pass every other part of a class but not do so well on tests, while some are better at tests. It's not very individualized and some students suffer. Longer classes can also give teachers more one on one time with the students so there can be some individualized education with block scheduling. I also agree that teachers in a block schedule need to give breaks during the class. Working for 90+ minutes straight is just too much.
