A lot of info on the LPD board, with some pics too. Brief update on tricities.com with a little pic too. Should be plenty about it on WJHL and WCYB tonight.

Shelters were opened up, had some evacuations and such. Main roads from Lee Co. and East Stone were blocked and traffic rerouted.

Think it may have been a tornado or microburst. The radar indicated rotation from about northern Lee County until somewhere near Wise, with the strongest right over BSG.

IMO, that was a tornado, not straight line winds, that caused that damage...notice the twisted trees and debris strown in different directions, not characteristic of straight line winds...

It was confirmed to be a tornado...rated an EF-1.

Info from the NWS...

Path was 1 mile long, width 300 yards.

Other info:

Seen during some of the news footage, that one home (and a good sized one), was picked up, spun around, and ended up coming to rest facing the opposite direction.

if you look in the middle of those pics, there is one of a house that has almost been destroyed, yet the sattelite dishes were on the side of the house and looks like they didn't even budge an inch...kinda crazy...you would figure it would have just ripped those off the side of the house.

I'm good!!!

Weather is my hobby. Many folks consider me the best weather forecaster in the Bluefield area...this is no joke...

You know, when I looked at that picture, I thought something was strange about that house...it just didn't look like it was supposed to be like that...you could see it was off its foundation.

Lance, that's how a tornado can be...completely destroy a major structure but do no damage to something less sturdy like the dishes. Also, notice in the pictures, how some homes just out of the path have NO DAMAGE at all...also very characteristic of a tornado.

A few years ago, when I was still working in the golf business, we had a storm go through our golf course. Completely tore up a section of the course about 75 yards wide and went across the entire course, the golf course superintendant's house, and into the neighboring woods behind a housing development on a dead-end street. I swore it was a tornado, even though no one else believed it. But the damage path was evident...twisted, snapped off trees; debris, including the new fence the super had just built around his yard and tree branches strown about haphazardly, an area that had some long grass/hay that looked like someone had taken a vacuum cleaner to it...looked like someone took a bushwhacker and cut a path of destruction across the golf course and through the neighboring woods...yet, a shelter/comfort station just 10 yards out of the path was untouched and there was no other damage on the golf course.

The storm late this week/weekend has me thinking back to '98, at least for us. Track that the models are bringing further west (some at least), but could end up swinging east of the Apps and closer to the coast, along with local forecasters downplaying potential.... Perfect, lol. Ok, so maybe it's wishful thinking smirk.gif
