GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted September 15, 2009 Driving time from Princeton to Gate City is 1 hour and 55 minutes. For Bluefield Beaver fans traveling to Gate City, expect to make it in 1 hour and 45 minutes if you stop one time for about 5 minutes. The quickest way is going out 460. No question, I-77 is safer, but it takes about 10 minutes longer, also....when you get off of I-77 near Bristol, you have to take a seriously dangerous road that is as windy and curvy as the roads when you get off of 460, so the best choice is going 460. I think it's worth the trip for Bluefield Beaver fans. There is lots of history at Legion Field in Gate City. A many of NFL players have played on that field and a many of Tennessee and Virginia Tech players have played on that field coupled with a team that claims the national championship unofficially of course. The year was either 1970 or 1974, I forget which state title team it was for Gate City, but either Tennessee High or Dobyn's Bennett (one of the nearby big TN schools) was voted the national champion in football that season, yet they got beat up by Gate City pretty good in a preseason scrimmage game. Gate City was also ranked 41st in the nation a few year ago as having the nation's most wins(winningest high school football programs in the country). I understand that was an unofficial thing, but nevertheless, it was interesting and reaffirms the fact that Gate City has been one of the better football programs not only in Virginia, but across the East Coast at least at the level/size of school it has played. Should be a good game. Attention everyone...PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS AS I-77 GOES NOWHERE NEAR BRISTOL OR GATE CITY. If you want the best roads getting there...Rt. 460 to Claypool Hill, Rt. 19 to Abingdon, Rt. 11 to I-81, I-81 to Bristol, 11W to Kingsport, Rt. 23 to Weber City, Rts. 23/58/421 to Gate City (just stay on 23 from Kingsport). May take a little longer but you won't have to worry about getting car sick and you won't be stuck in the middle of nowhere if you should have car trouble. If getting car sick is no worries...Rt. 460 to Claypool Hill, Rt. 19 to Hansonville, Rt. 58 to Parsonage, Rt. 71 to Gate City. This road sucks, especially at night and especially if the weather is bad. Also, if getting car sick is a possibility, DO NOT TAKE RT. 421 FROM BRISTOL TO GATE CITY. And it will take at least two hours from Bluefield regardless of which route you take.

Yeah also GC is 2nd in Virginia for highest winning percentage for a high school program and ranked 68th in the country in winning percentage. It will be a great game and a great series. Hopefully this can become a good rivalry and we can continue to play year after year.

GC went on to go undefeated and were ranked high in the national rankings in this particular year. I can't remember if it was 1970 or 1974. VHSLhelper 571 Report Share Posted September 16, 2009 When I was at RU, it took me 2.5 hours to get to my apt. near McAdos, and the 1st Tunnel was the half-way point. It takes me 45 minutes to get to the Ernie, so that leaves 30. Knock off 5 from Food City to the tunnel and 3 from Ernie to CH, that makes 22. (Of course, I never had/have "rush-hour traffic" to deal with... and I drive the speed limit whenever possible.)

I would say it takes more than 5 minutes to get to the tunnels from Food City, more like 10. and it takes more like 5 minutes to get from RHS to Claypool Hill by the time you factor in getting caught by at least one light. Nadoball 18 Report Share Posted September 16, 2009 Not sure about this folks but heard from a pretty reliable source that its on the board to cease any Tazewell County team from playing Gate City after this year. From what I understand this all started with the Tazewell/Gate City game with the fans and cheerleaders. So folks get ready you may not see Tazewell, Richlands or any other Tazewell County teams playing Gate City anymore. From what i understand its not only Tazewell taking this to the school board. Im not throwing out blame b/c I wasn't there and didn't see it, but if its true from what I hear then it is very rude and uncalled for. Once again I don't know what happened but I would hate to see Richlands and GC not play anymore. I also posted this in the GC/Lebanon thread

I also posted this in the GC/Lebanon thread I guess that is possible but I really don't see them stopping playing each other. Especially GC and Richlands, I don't think Coach Mance would want to stop this game and I don't think he would let that happen. Like I said it is possible but I say very unlikely. LegendatLegion 109 Report Share Posted September 17, 2009 Over 7,000 people at the GC and South game, and not one single complaint. The cheerleaders were on the sideline though, that and they whipped GC's butt.

I hope it is Tazewell only. I really dont think it has much to do with cheerleaders. That is probably the excuse but I have a feeling the reason is that Tazewell other than last year has not been very competitive with GC since renewing the series. I have been hoping to get them replaced for about 4 years now. Will not hurt my feelings at all to see them drop us. Just plain cowardly is what it boils down too. If they are afraid to play Gate City then just say so. Dont blame it on something that can be fixed. We have a great police department to see to that.
