Mitchell Stadium to possibly be renamed?

But the City of Bluefield sure did find the money to dig up and relandscape the "circles" on Oakhurst...guess they became and eyesore to Merriman during his "jogs" up and down the road there. That, and the fact the Mayor and the Chairwoman of the Beautification Committee pass by them on a regular basis. One thing they need to do is get the streetsweeper out to clean up all the gravels so they don't wash into the stormwater system and clog it up...and while they are at it, they need to unclog the drains that are already stopped up...

With ESPN coming to town, that place will be spit-shined for the Aug. 27 showdown.

Heck you never know maybe we'll even draw the Super Six committee out of Wheeling for a day to come down and take notice of the place. But hey it don't always hurt to hope for miracles. LOL!

Just my $.02...

1.) I don't know the Mitchell's, or the history Mitchell Stadium, but I do know that a Mitchell must have done something to gain that recognition and it SHOULD be respected. Demoting the faith and/or goodwill of a person and replacing them with someone else, albeit a legend, doesn't exactly show high integrity on the City of Bluefield. But of course, who's to say that this town has integrity anyways?

2.) I believe the City of Bluefield could make a larger statement if they were to erect some type of statue/Wall of Fame for not only Merrill Gainer, but all of the legendary coaches that have left their mark in the community. Could they make Gainer's a bit larger than everyone else's? Sure. Showing more respect to the man who is credited with getting the storied tradition that is Bluefield football off the ground would be absolutely fine in my book. Adding a memorial fixture somewhere in the stadium would not only enhance the cosmetic effects of [insert name here] Stadium, but it also adds a tangible piece of history. If it's attention the city is wanting, a statue-esque fixture would draw more attention to Gainer and everyone else who deserves to be honored, IMO.

My best analogy at the moment: Do you get the full experience of Gettysburg just by looking at a map or driving by the exit? No. You get the full effect if and when you're able to stop in and actually take in all of the history it has to offer.

I had no idea who Mitchell was, either, until I read sometning in the Telegraph a few days ago that says he was a former Bluefield City Manager. (I'm assumng the WV Bluefield.)

But the same story incorrectly identifies Roanoke's Patriots Stadium as Patrick Stadium, so I don't know.

You forgot about the "strip club" right beside the stadium...Bluefield doesn't have one of those either...

Surely a better idea could be agreed upon like making some kind of hall of fame for these local coaches instead of renaming the stadium.

I hope renaming the stadium gets blocked when the vote comes up.

"Whalen said she and her fellow board members didn’t know until last week that a dedication ceremony for the renaming of the stadium had already been scheduled by the group."

For that alone, I'd kick their butts out of the meeting.

Wht's the big deal?

Let Roanoke beat'em to it.

Missed the 50th anniversary of the 1st title.

Missed doing it while he was alive.

I wouldnt give that Beckett guy the time of day.

Gainer was a great coach, and as much as anyone deserves to be honored.

I have real problems with naming thing after folks. Where you run into problems is once you name something for someone it leads to problems down the road. At the time the person the thing is named for is very deserving. As time goes on, other folks accomplish things and are equally deserving of a similar honor.

Exactly what I was thinking

Thank you Mr. Mayor

According to Bluefield, Va. Mayor Don Harris, not many of the town’s residents have expressed an opinion over whether or not Mitchell Stadium should be renamed the Merrill Gainer Stadium.

“I haven’t heard very many opinions expressed, one way or another,” Harris said. “It’s a Bluefield, West Virginia issue. Graham High School does play there, but the stadium is owned by Bluefield, W.Va. We have no dog in the fight.”

Thank you Mr. Principal

John O’Neal, principal at Graham High School, has not heard anything about the controversy either.

“I’ve not heard a word,” he said. “Really, it’s not been discussed.”

O’Neal said the Graham High School football program would most likely not be affected by any name change.

“It’s the same stadium, no matter what they name it,” he said. “It’s just a privilege for us to play there, no matter what it’s called.”
