-oo- 146 Report Share Posted November 29, 2011 I am so glad you said 9 or 10 at night because when I read 9 or 10, I was already thinking AM!!! :) Hahahaha, no, we went all day long. We would be out there on the field all day whether it was 65 and rainy or 95 and scorching. Or you could just watch American Pie: Band Camp. No screw that, no one pay attention to this comment hahaha!!

EH31 2,518 Report Share Posted November 29, 2011 I was in my high school band for 4 years on the drumline and I would like to see you (those that dont believe band is a sport) go to band camp for a week where we wake up at 8 am and practice music, marching, and do tons of push ups until 9 or 10 at night. <img src="http://www.myiconart.com/ekmps/shops/myiconart/images/hot-rod-cool-beans-ladies-t-shirt-56551-p.png">

-oo- 146 Report Share Posted November 30, 2011 I am curious...what constitutes "tons of pushups"? I believe we did somewhere around 500 push ups one day. Of course it was Grahams band and Grahams band does have a very good rep for being disciplined and for being a great band so I can't really speak for all bands but to me and my band experience, band is a sport. ThomasDenton 79 Report Share Posted November 30, 2011 The pride of Washington County is our aprreciation for the musical arts. I think that is why we are the front runners in advanced education. Our school board has carried out new construction for new band halls for 2 schools already. Band is more than a sport, it is way of life over here. I was a band member and have discussed the rigoruous routines and tremendous amount of athleticism I had to display during marching band season. The instant pressure of staying on point with my steps while keeping rythym with the musical set was very apparent during half-time shows at Falcon Hill. Camelot would not be Camelot without the stimulation of music and I think that the Mighty Falcon Regiment is second to none! So, to say it in terms you will understand: BAND IS MORE THAN A SPORT! IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU LIKE! I hate to say it, but I do agree with you. Washington County puts a lot of stock in the music departments, as seen by the new band rooms at Abingdon and Battle. But I've got to disagree with one thing: Abingdon's band is pretty good, but they are second to a lot of schools out there....including Battle! :D

Per capita, it had the best talent of any band in SWVA...including Richlands. That being said, it didn't have the sheer numbers to compete with 100+ member bands. Chilhowie got it in the late 90's for a few years. Battle's band owned the 80's and early part of the 90's. Graham did well in the middle of this decade. Even Holston's band has a good honor band history. By the way, I don't know what weight you put on honor band ratings. I know jack-tits about band, I was always on the football field... The "VBODA Honor Band" is a good tool to see which bands had high quality. It requires scores of "superior" at both the state marching and concert festivals. But it's not a perfect tool for two reasons. One, the directors have to actually do both the state marching and concert festivals. From experience, I can tell you that Graham didn't do the state concert festival until 2004. MB didn't place a high priority on the concert portion of the program, so though we would make "superior" rankings in marching most years, we would never have an opportunity to do it in the concert festival. If Graham had done concert festivals, Graham would probably have 12-15 honor band appearances, rather than 2. Many directors, likewise, will not do the state marching festivals, because the judging is so difficult. It's a bloodbath, really: every mistake is noticed. The judges are either very respected high school directors or college directors, and they notice EVERYTHING. Two, for the state concert festival, bands have a choice to play "grades" of music. When I say "grades", music is graded on technical difficulty on a six-grade scale, I-VI. Grade I music is more akin to "Mary Had a Little Lamb", Grade VI music is more akin to something by Bach. You get a little more forgiveness the higher in grade you go. Some schools play Grade III-IV music, some play Grade V-VI music. Holston, for example, made about a bazillion Honor Bands by playing Grade III music at festival, hence why their inclusion is a bit...odd. The concert festival shouldn't be so subjective. It should be more difficult.

Richlands owned the area during the Swartz era. Honor Band Ratings are all that matters to a band. That means you got a Superior rating overall in the Field Show portion, and straight superiors in the Concert portion in March. It means alot to a band. And on Page 9 was the discussion of All-District. I skipped Graham's state title game in 2001 for All-District tryouts. Never regretted that decision. Placed 2nd symphonic, good enough to qualify for All-Virginia tryouts. Also met a girl at the 2002 All-District band concert that became my first real girlfriend (and much later, Virginia's representative to Miss USA).
