How convenient for you that the page is shut down. I bet you filed a court-ordered thingy to shut it down since it disagreed with you.

Wtf is your problem? We have proven that BY THE DEFINITION band IS a sport. There is way more physical activity in it that you could ever imagine. Baritones weigh 15-20 lbs and during the course of a show, they hold them up for 12-15 minutes straight. So to understand how thy feels, go get a 20 lb weight and hold it at chest level, 8-12 inches out from your chest for 15 straight minutes. It's not easy. A marching tuba weights 70 lbs and all that weight rests on your neck and shoulders. It's not easy. Also, I wore a pedometer on competition day once. From the time I left my house at 6:30 am to the time I got back at 11 pm, I had walked 8.9 miles. That's an awful long way for something that requires "no skill". Furthermore, it is extremely difficult to learn how to play any instrument. 1000s of hours of practice before you even get to march. You have to know how to produce well over 30 different notes, many using the exact same fingering or slide position. It's NOT easy.

I come from a band well known all around this state. We were one of the best in the entire state many years. We've won competitions from JMU to Charlottesville. West Virginia. Tennessee. Boone North Carolina at ASU. We won best band at the COTTON BOWL. Out of 20 bands from all over in Dallas Texas, we won. So don't sit there and tell me I have no skill. I can play trombone, trumpet, tuba, baritone, saxophone, electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums.

So until you've walked in the shoes of a musician, DO NOT DOWN US!!

That does sound skillful....skillfully wasting your time.

You spend half your time posting on a message board about high school sports in an area you've probably never even been to.... and he's wasting his time???

I know at Battle we give our band heck during football season because many in our band (not necessarily the students, but parents and others around the program) can seem like jerks sometimes when it comes to certain situations. But at the same time we have the upmost respect for our band because of what they accomplish (just take a look at our many trophy cases lining the halls or go to a game or competition). I've seen what they go through and if they want to consider it a sport, then I will too.

My favorite was the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.

Since the city of Jacksonville, Florida, can't maintain a proper sidewalk if the city's fate depended on it, I tripped over mound of grass that had grown up between a crack in the sidewalk. Did it on New Year's Eve, which by my recollection was the day before the game. A legitimate Grade-2 sprain.

The day of the game, we did the following parade route:

1. Parked 1.5 miles from EverBank Field.

2. Marched from the buses to the stadium.

3. Went .5 mile out of the way to do a small pep rally for the VAF.

4. Marched back the .5 mile.

5. Marched around the stadium once.

6. Marched into the stadium and around the concourse one full time.

7. Marched 27 rows up into the stands.

On a sprained ankle. This didn't include the halftime show.

I feel ya man. My senior year, I was the back field conductor for the second movement in our show. We did a double competition that year. Both in Charlottesville. One at Monticello, one at Cville High. That morning we stopped at Glenvar to do a run-through on their field (thanks to their boosters for letting us do this). However, it had came a monsoon in Roanoke apparently. And the game the night before tore the field to shreds.

As I was running to the podium in that run-through, I slid in the mud, doing a complete split. As a freshman, I partially tore my ACL in my left knee, but not enough for surgery. Just enough to hurt real bad. When I slid, I aggregated that knee pretty bad. I went the rest of the day, 2 run-throughs at Glenvar as well as a show at each high school.

It absolutely sucked! So I know what it's like to march injured.

a few years back there was a HUGE shit storm over a band thread lol

I remember it well. At that time if memory serves me correctly the thread was a huge one! And nobody won! :) I think cheerleading was mentioned as well.

My problem is you NEEEERRDS seem to think that moving around and getting some mild form of excercise is now a sport.

Look, Banding is basically line dancing where you provide your own music and actually dress worse than a cowboy. Just because you have to memorize some notes and you get flushed in the face doesnt mean you are some kind of athlete or sports stud.

Before we get on this wild tangent: Dungeons and Dragons isnt a sport either. Neither is LARPing.

Now you are complaining about field conditions? Astroturf over Natural?

What is next? You gonna get Wilson or Riddel to manufacture those spit-thingies for your Oboes?

There are many great things about playing for a state championship... The Variable finding this board because of it = NOT one of them.

Just think, if you hadnt been whining about all the imaginary conspiracies against Richlands and doing the stereotypical VaTech fan complain-about-officiating-whenever-your-team-loses then this never would have happened.

You have yourself to blame. Go ahead and appologise to the board.

BTW, lots of folks here got a kick out of this JOKE thread last night in case you didnt realize it. I couldnt be any less serious about these posts than I currently am being on this thread. You take awesome pictures...but your ability to not take yourself too seriously needs work.

I think you just confused VaTech fans with UVA fans...

When we lose we blame Brian Stinespring, regardless.

Were you born with no sense of humor? Are you a completely miserable human being? Maybe I have seen a lot worse in my life than a little joshing and obvious tongue-in-cheek sarcasm. Incidentally to me it comes off as trivial and humorous, but I think this is less you being offended for your nephew and more the fact that you havent liked me being on this board from day one.

Either way, I dont care and either way I feel sorry for you. But thanks for ruining the thread.

BTW, I was in orchestra. I have all the respect in the world for the talent it takes for someone to learn an instrument and learn it well enough to perform in front of a crowd all the while partaking in a choreographed routine. All the jokes I just threw out, for the most part I have heard before directed at me or a friend in some form. I laughed it off then. You should try it now.
