  1. With respect to those who hold a different opinion, I'm not one saying they end up with the same amount of titles. Like I wrote, I think Graham in 1978, 1981, 1990, 1993, 2001, and 2003 win state titles, and they would have been in the mix in 1974 and 1984. I think they would have lost to PV in 1995. So, in my opinion only, I think they would have very likely had 5 more state titles to their resume. Multiple examples given in the thread, for example, Graham 1993. Giles win Div 2 state title and goes 14-0. Closest games are Haysi and BBurg with Giles winning by a touchdown in both. Graham in 1993 throttled Blacksburg 26-14, but a game that was 26-0 at one point and Blacksburg had a last minute score to make it 13-14 points. Graham lost to an All American led Jefferson Forest team in Anthony Poindexter in a very competitive game in the semi's.
  2. 84 BBurg, for me personally, not just the coldest sporting event ever, but truly the coldest I have ever been and by quite a bit of margin.
  3. Coach Carlock was a tough Dude. A former marine who was all about playing the best competition and competing against very tough competition. He was wired that way. As mentioned, the single A schools in the area (keep in mind now, 1971 to 1985 (3 levels of play in Virginia). Graham would have been playing the likes of Pocahontas (no disrespect to the Indians who I still love and went there for 2 years), Fort Chiswell, Rural Retreat, Northwood, Garden, Saltville -Worthy High (fell off big time by the mid 70's after their late state runs of prior years), Rich Valley etc. The single A competition in far Southwestern Va with the likes of Lonesome Pine was more than legit as we all know, but Graham couldn't possibly be in that district with those travel times. By 1986 with the reclassification from 3 levels of play to 6 levels of play, Graham's usual competition was already at the Div 3 level. Also, Coach Carlock loved going east. Graham played Blacksburg, Salem, Christiansburg many times and many years, and he had some games with GW Danville. Those teams wouldn't have likely played game after 1985 when Graham played em (if Graham were Div 2-Single A I know Giles and BBurg played when Giles dropped in the early 90's, but that's a rival game. For the reasons above, these are why Graham played down for years not just from 71 to 85, but from 86 until Graham finally dropped to Div 2 in the mid 2000s. As Sasquatch mentioned, I had forgot about GW Danville, Elizabethton, Woodrow Wilson (Triple A Beckley, WV), also Greenville, TN, with Graham winning one of those contests over Greenville also. Coach Carlock actually scrimmaged Varina once. I think this was Ahmad Bradshaw's senior year. Varina was a powerhouse. I think they were Div 5 then.
  4. Graham would have done well at the single A level from 72 through 85, which is where they should have been. Graham also would have done well in 93, 2000, and really from 2000-2004ish at the Group 2A level and not playing Div 3. The 93 team by seasons end was very good, and lost to a once in a generational type team in Jef. Forest in the semis. Hard to say what happens historically, but Graham, Richlands, Gate City, and Giles have been at the same level for a while now, and P. Valley/Union has gone 2 decades since winning a title. One thing we can't account for and many forget about when discussing these things is not game 14 or 15 and which team is better on that game. It's about the wear and tear of playing the schedule of a higher level from games 1 through 13 and the competition getting there, and what competition does in the areas of injuries. I'm touching on the old Boise State argument and no question, as Boise demonstrated, they could play with and sometimes beat the elite Big 12/SEC schools in those Big Bowl games for one given game, but Boise wasn't going through the gauntlet like Oklahoma or Bama was week after week which tears into your depth chart. At the Div 3 level, Graham was playing the likes of 5A GW Danville, Blacksburg, Woodrow Wilson, Greenville, TN, and just an absolute gauntlet of teams long before the state semis or state finals. Historically, nobody knows what would have happened, but Graham truly did play up for years. Years I feel confident the GMen would have done well and very likely would have had a title if playing down were.... 1976- Graham lost to BBurg who then lost to Martinsville 6-3 as time expired, and Martinsville lost state title to legendary Southampton in the title game as time expired. Graham beat Gate City in 76. In single A, Pennington lost the state title to Madison County by a TD. 1981, Graham lost at Martinsville (if I can call it that) and Martinsville lost at Tabb the following week in the title game. 1990, 1993- one of the most underrated Graham teams. Lost 7-6 at Salem in a game Graham doubled Salem's total yardage and had 5 TOs. In the playoffs, Graham lost to a 2015 type Appo team in Jef. FOREST which was a once in a two decade type team. Giles won the Div 2 title and it's closest games were Blacksburg (beat em by a TD) and Haysi. Graham best Blacksburg by 2 TDs that year and led 26-7 until a last minute Blacksburg score. 2001. That Graham team shouldn't have lost to Harrisonburg 2003. Ahmad's senior year lost to again, what may have been a team of the decade in yr semis to Gretna. If Graham had played at their level, I think they have 6 more title minus one to equal 5 more. In 95, Graham wouldn't have beat Powell Valley. Graham had some good teams that they would have been in the conversation for in 1974, 1978 and 1984. One of Gate Cities toughest contest on that legendary team was their 37-0 win over Graham, but a game that was 14-0 going I to the fourth. GC beat Southampton 28-7 in yr state finals. If Graham is single A in 74, they would have been in the mix for sure.
  5. I don't think it would matter regardless of the color coding map. This young Bluefield team is no threat to win a state title. Credit the Beavers on getting that W, and they will definitely improve as they are young and very talented, and you will see their improvement go up at an alarming rate compared to most other AA teams in WV (if the season continues and finishes), but even with their sure improvement, this team isn't a state title threat like they are on most years. With that said, what does is say about a program as to how they are judged on whether they are state title contenders or not? It says a lot. But......this year.....it's not happening. There is surely 2 teams in AA WV that are at Least better than them not just now, but also by season's end.
  6. You go that right brother. Feels like being in a state prison
  7. Can't wait! Go Beavers! What are the odds of a few stragglers trying the ole climb the hill behind the Home Side Bleachers, and watching from the hill/cliff. I haven't done that since I was a kid, but I imagine it has to be tempting. I'm sure the Police Dept. will be all over this
  8. This tread is totally going in the Wilderness.
  9. Random Football Thread is the title so here goes. I wanna see what the two "hammer foots" do in the former Beavers Kaulin Parris at WVU, and good ole Levi up in Happy Valley.
  10. "3A" Division 3 for Graham, not 2A. Graham won 2 titles at the Division 3 level while playing with 1A numbers. Back then, there were 6 levels of classification like there is today, but they were called Divisions. Div 1 through 6. Graham was Div 3. You also had single A, AA, and AAA and in Single A, you had Div 1 and 2. In AA, you had Div 3 and 4, and in AAA, you had Div 5 and 6. Most people used the lingo of Big and Small instead of Divisions when describing a team. For example, Richlands in 1992 was "Double A big," or Division 4. Graham was "AA small," meaning Division 3, biut not to be mistaken as the 2nd out of 6 levels of play. In 1962, Graham had 2A numbers at best (borderline 1A numbers) when they won the Triple A state title, and VA only had 3 classes or levels of play then. From 1970 to 1985, vA still only had 3 classes and Graham was AA and should have been 1A the whole time. Graham had several state semis and one state title loss while in Div 3 in addition to the 2 titles won while in Div 3. In all truth, Graham played not just up for 50 years, but played 2 levels/2 classifications up for about 45-50 years. That's the remarkable part to me in that they truly were borderline playing up 2 classifications from where they should have been. Last of all, how about Tazewell's 86 and Richland's 92 titles. Both would be equal to 4A today as both schools then were 2A "big," Division 4 and VA having 6 classes of play, both schools won titles playing at the 4yh highest out of 6 classifications. That's impressive.
  11. I think Dixon will have PC doing very well, but a couple of things. A sleeping giant talent wise at the 1A level may actually be Galax when compared to other 1A schools in Southwestern VA. I think it was Galax (kind of like we think of Pulaski now) who was one coach away from being a late playoff contender seemingly every year under Dixon. I am not so sure Pulaski has the talent of the 80's and 90's. Much of their issues the past 15 years have been coaching, but some of it, at least some of it....has been a talent fall off compared to where they once where. They've taken a hit in their numbers compared to years past. For Dixon, he certainly can and will adjust, but he will face an adjustment needed defensively. He will see far, far more wide open offensive sets and first down passing attempts than he did at the 1A level. I think he does well and takes Pulaski back to being very, very solid, but I'm not sure Pulaski is state title potential in talent like it once was.
  12. I'm beginning to wonder if we are truly seeing the effects of population shifts. People leaving Southwestern VA, and some of the first effects being seen in smaller schools, or to be more specific, in towns with struggling economies that have little room for population decline, etc. Maybe this is not the case at all, but just a situation where Marion, Lebanon, and now Giles, are clearly down. Hard to say...
  13. When C-19 tips....it will tip fast. What I'm saying is, once the Herd is reached, the virus will plummet as fast as it arrived. I think the Herd threshold will be reached before the vaccine reaches the market on the U.S. That's good and bad. It's good in the fact that the virus will dissipate, but it's bad for the here and now as in....it's that contagious.
  14. Covid19 is more than serious. It's the real deal. There's no question about it. I have had it, so I can attest to it personally. We are trying to go by science and it's important to go by science IN ALL facets of any argument or debate or discussion about C-19 from start to finish. For example, we have several pieces of sound data above in this thread giving numbers about C-19 that are accurate and there's no question, any thought stating it's not very serious or is fake is just absurd. We have scientific data, metrics, and more to support this point. With this written, lets CONTINUE with the scientific viewpoint. We also have data suggesting throughout history that many, many contagious and serious illnesses for some reason or another (be it Darwinian selection or Divine intervention) children DO NOT transmit very well do adults. From smallpox to Ebola to the Spanish Flu, and to even chicken pox (yes, an adult who has never had chicken pox can be around a child who has it and remarkably, the adult usually and somehow doesn't get it.) Of course today, we have a vaccine for this as well. Anyway and historically, it is certainly possibly and it happens, children can surely transmit serious and contagious illnesses to adults, but it is overwhelmingly LOW in chance. We have theories why, but still aren't completely sure. With all of the above written, we have very, very, very little data so far on C-19's ability to transmit/infect from a child to an adult or more important and vulnerable, a transmission from a child to an elderly adult who likely has co-morbidiities. Of the anecdotal data we have with C-19, and it's only anecdotal so far, it's becoming very clear that children are very unlikely to transmit the virus to adults. Yes, it's possible and it's easy to cherry pick the one case in Iowa or Colorado where the kid gave it to 5 adults, etc ) but it's absolutely the exception to the rule. The media has been and continues to beg for, to actively seek out, to look for this scenario and has been doing so for months, and they are turning up empty 99% of the time. One theory is that the immune response is so overwhelmingly powerful in children that the virus is weakened to the point that the overall "viral load" in the child is so rapidly decreased that sheer volume of virus around an adult or other child is greatly limited. Because of this, I am in fact, very much in favor of ALL schools opening and returning in class. With that written, when I say all schools, I am talking about Pre-K through 8th grade. I would be in favor of High Schools returning only with mandatory mask policy and would prefer a mixed curriculum of 2 or 3 days in school and 2 or 3 days online. With colleges, I would halt all public attendance until December. This is only my opinion, and yes, as you may suspect, I am in the medical field and have Dr as one of my credentials. It's also how I contracted the illness months ago. If we are going to argue scientific data to support an argument (a good thing) then we need to stay with that data or lack thereof when arguing the entire argument, from start to finish. The data in my opinion is far, far in favor of returning pre K kids through 8th grade to school, and in High School, its tricky, it's 50-50.
  15. One of, keywords....."one of" the reasons some.....keyword "some" governor's may want to keep schools from reopening is political in nature. Kids at home means mom's can't get back to work. Kids at home means economic hardships for families and the economy. Many people vote with their pockets and the Democratic party knows this. I will just say it.......some governor's are keeping some of the schools from reopening due to the hopes it hurtsTrump in the general election. Some o
  16. Disagree 100 percent. The grape flavor is something to avoid, but the cherry flavor is something I was raised on. Other than Diabetes, Heart Disease, a few rotten teeth, and a near death experience at a religious gathering in a jungle in South America, I've had no issues with it and I love the taste
  17. The Bulldogs and G-Men "plan" on playing this spring. I hope it holds up for all of em including the ones in VA planning on spring, and the Beavers and WV schools planning for this fall.
  18. Front row, guy in the middle named Wess.........a bad dude in his own right (meaning-one hell of a football player in his time) and a great man is Terry.
  19. I set on the 35 yd line and watched it live. Richlands gashed em on the ground. Entire field wasn't muddy. Even in the parts with intact grass, Richland's won those battles also. Will echo this fact about the 93 Blues since it was mentioned. They paid severely for 92. The 93 team started 0 and 2 with a loss to Lebanon in game 1 with a game they dominated, but had 7 turnovers. The next game against P. Valley, they lost a close game in which they turned over 5 times, and had 3 inside the P. Valley 15 yard line. I think P. Valley might have won the state title that year. Richland's outplayed em. I was at both of those games and worked in Richland's from 91-95. Richland's other loss was to Christiansburg in a game in which Richland's again turned over 5 times. Richlands had got the turnovers in control by game 10 and was roaring. In the three losses for the 7-3 record, they totalled 17 turnovers. Graham in 93 was absolutely impressive, but Richlands beat us. Graham lost to an out of this world Jefferson Forest Anthony Poindexter led team in the state semis that was equal to an Appo team of recent or Gretna teams of the mid 2000s. Ask the older generations in Richlands that truly know football. So many will tell you about the 93 team by seasons end. I watched 92 and 93 teams play about 7 times each. I'm telling you what many of the older Blues folks would......the 93 team by regular seasons end was equally as good as the 92 team and maybe better. Looking back on history, we can only see 7-3 for 1993, but people don't know the details of the 3 losses. If we will never know what would have happened in 92 without illegal cleats, we also can't assume we know that Richlands would not have won it in 93, if allowed to make the playoffs. I would have loved their chances in 93 with that run game and defense. Nobody stopped em on the ground all year long. One other sidenote. On 1992, Richlands beat Salem by 10. Richlands beat Orange County in the state title game by 9. Just saying...
  20. I was the stupid Son Biat...........who survived 2 Covids and yes, I'm the man in the BDT and newspapers across the country that was 1 of the 110 people who tested positive after testing negative. Serious about the above...but want to know why? Claypool Hill, VA. A restaurant, massage parlor, and tattoo shop not to be named. All of em were Richlands fans, even the luv me long times at the massage parlor told me, "luv Blues long time."
  21. I'm going to disagree with one poster on Richlands in 93 not being able to win a title. They were a completely different team by the end of game 10, even with the 7-3 record. I thought they were very close to as good as the 92 team by seasons end. When looking back nearly 30 yrs later and seeing, (7-3) in regular season, don't let that fool you. This team was completely different and improved at a rate way beyond their peers from game 1 through 10. Their run game was good enough by regular seasons end to allow them to be in every game they played. Only my opinion.
  22. Over the years, in conversations I've had with many non Salem and non Richlands fans, at least about 15 in my time have left out Orange County and some even confused by the thought when told the Richlands/Salem game was the semis. The very fact that many have left out Orange County is why it matters. Many don't know, and this is why it matters when the conversation of Richlands/Salem comes up. So many people think the cleats game was the state title.
  23. No dog in the fight, but a little disrespectful for anyone to assume that Salem would have automatically beat Orange County. I think many of folks have forgotten that Richlands and Salem was the state semifinals and not the state title. If Salem wins the game over the Blues, or if the VHSL would have quickly found out about the cleats and declared Salem the winner over Richlands, there is no guarantee Salem beats Orange County in the state title game. They would have been favored, but still no guaranteed win.
