  1. This is from a very good source at Northwood. " A committee of students from from both schools (Rich Valley and R.B. Worthy) met to decide name, colors, and mascot. Salt Valley was one of the favorites as was North Smyth. They settled on Northwood as not to show any favoritism. The name was Panthers from the start due to the wildlife in the area. The colors were navy and gold (like Pitt) but it offended the RBW side because of RV gold. It was then changed to silver. I was in grade school when the consolidation happened, but what I have heard from some of the people that were supposedly on that committee the story is very similar. The biggest difference is how "Northwood" came about. It was told to me that the committee was sitting under a picnic shelter behind the football stadium deciding on names and one of the students laid down on a picnic table and was looking up at the rafters and one of the studs had "Northwoods Lumber Company" stamped on it. That person suggested "Northwood" and it was voted on.
  2. I remember ESPN did a story on original or clever high school nicknames and they mentioned R.B. Worthy Shakers, and also stated that no one else used that nickname.
  3. Like I said I know nothing of the fish farm there, just what I knew about the one in Salt Vegas.
  4. I haven't read anything about this fish farm, but I can tell you about the Cobia fish farm that was in Saltville. When it first started up they employed about 100 people then quickly went to 50. After about 4 years they went down to 15 and eventually closed. I can't remember for sure how long they were there, but it wasn't very long. At the same time Virginia Tech set up an extension center in Saltville dedicated to fish farming and they shut it down before the Cobia fish farm. Now i'm not saying that this venture wont work in Doran, I'm just telling what I saw take place in Saltville.
  5. During the mid 90's the HOGO had a 9 team district. Patrick Henry, Holston, John S. Battle, Castlewood, Lebanon, Northwood, chilhowie, Rural Retreat, & George Wythe. Hogo Sports can confirm, (I really wish he hadn't shut down Hogoonline) but I think the original lineup of the HOGO in 1970 was Rich Valley, Saltville, Chilhowie, Honaker, Rural Retreat. Castlewood joined in 1978. Lebanon has come in and out several times. The 87-88 year saw Rich Valley and Saltville combine to form Northwood, Honaker leave and Patrick Henry drop from AA and join.
  6. The ATV trails are putting money in economy's that don't even have trails. Such as Bristol, Washington Co., Smyth Co. you just can't see it. Back to the topic if THS wants the football program to grow and get back to what it used to be, they will not let anyone interfere with Colobro.
  7. Patrick Henry should be pretty good as well. 17-3 last year only lost 2 Seniors.
  8. When I played the first few games started at 8, then after the time change they started a 7:30.
  9. If that's the way it's going to work, it will be just as it was before the last change.
  10. I almost look for the Black Diamond and whats left of the HOGO to come together and form a district in the next cycle.
  11. Not sure whats going on. Northwood will never be a steady playoff team or contender until steady consistent coaching is in place.
  12. Oh no, make no mistake I got the context of the original post and most likely would have never replied. But what you failed to realize is that the Troll was being trolled by Bulldogs52 and Dick_Vitale and you took the bait, which was ironic and funny as heck. BTW did I read correctly that you are a uva grad? If so you must have been a child prodigy and graduated last year at the TINDER age of 12 to resort to name calling like "Crappy". lol You hurt my feelings I've never been called that before I need a safe space!
  13. Don't put the '85 Bears down like that. They were a legit Team.
  14. Rebel_Yell, I'm thinking it was you who couldn't get the sarcasm.
  15. I don't like GW, I do pull for them in the playoffs, but calling their schedule weak? Outside of Northwood and Holston everyone else they played is pretty decent or traditionally strong. They won against 7 of 8 playoff teams.
  16. In our little area you have 3 age groups in jr. league they all 3 run a different offense and defense and that changes every year because the Daddy's I mean coaches move up with their kids. Then you get to the middle school and they are running a power I double tights or double wing and the high school is running an air raid spread. I firmly believe that the whole system from high school on down should be running the same o and d or something very close to it. It also helps if you have a Head coach for more than a 4 year average.
  17. Saltville was a Company town ran by Olin. The school system was not part of Smyth County Schools, Olin provided everything for them including teachers and coaches salary's. They provided housing or partial housing for employees. We were always told that Olin would "recruit" fathers to come work for them and give them housing so their kids could receive good schooling and participate in sports after school. FWIW A lot of people that were not natives of, or had family in Saltville moved there. lol
  18. Do you like the spread? If so look at the similarities between the spread and the singlewing, there is a lot in common between the two.
  19. He is supposed to be playing Friday.
  20. If you do, this is my opinion. If your going to sit on Abingdon side go secure your seat and go to the other side to watch the Falcon's entrance. It is pretty cool.
  21. From my understanding he was only supposed to be out for 2 weeks, and be back for the play-offs. Just got a text saying he is playing against Radford.
