  1. What do most people like more a NCAA basketball tourney with some scrubs getting in and more fan bases getting involved and some young kids getting more practice and schools making more money ( because lets get serious football money is what props up all other high school sports in 75% of schools).

Or a NCAA football type of tourney where just a few make it in. 1) because they play in a poor district. 2) Have great programs like a Union/Richlands/GC so teams trying to build up a program like a Graham/Rv/Grundy will always fall short.

I will never complain to loudly if Richlands makes it with a 4-6 record, but I would flip my lid if we missed the playoffs with a 9-1 or 8-2 record because we have a 3A  Abingdon in our district.

Here in SWVA with the economy struggling and money short and knowing how much pride we have in High School football and how much enjoyment we get out of watching and supporting our boys it just seems like common sense that the more teams you have involved with football playoffs the better for everyone.

I know some of you old school guys liked it when the regular season would mean something, but times have changed. 20 years ago would anyone have believed that the 2 AA teams from far SWVA would be to 2 teams left with the high powered passing offenses with all the skill players running and gunning for over 40 points a game.

  2. I posted earlier this year that I spoke with " someone in the know " from Glenvar and they said they were not worried with anyone west of Giles. From the bottom of my heart I hope Union will pound Glenvar's peepees in the dirt and show them that the boys from Southwest Virginia can play football! If Richlands don't win it all I really hope Union can. I think this is how 99% of Richlands fans are thinking.

  3. I think the reasoning for that is we have more 2A teams in the west than they do in the east ( don't know for sure just a guess). I hate bye weeks in the playoffs, it cools off hot teams. Unless you are playing a team that has a unique style of play like Giles, it just takes you out of your routine. I like the way it is now. If you have a team that just makes it like a 13-16 seed and gets killed that first game so what. Those teams got there butts handed to them more than once in the regular season anyway. It just helps teams like Rv or Graham that are trying to build up the fan base and young players. Teams like GC, Union and Richlands it wouldn't change much for them normally. A team like Graham made some noise this year, if you had an 8 team playoff they would have been left out. If you have 12 then you may as well have 16 so the 1-4 seeds can at least make some money. A team like Gc, Union and Richlands can make alot of money in just 1 extra game, it would be a big waste to have a bye week for those teams.

  4. If the Union team that played Richlands shows up they are just about unbeatable IMOA, they played as close to a perfect game as I have ever watched for a high school game. If the Union team that played Central shows up its game over. I will be pulling for Union. I would love to see a Union/Richlands rematch on a neutral field, I just hope they both can make it there.

  5. The lady who fell at the Union game is Blankenship's Grandma. I sat behind her at the Abingdon game, she said she was doing okay just a few little issues. She is a real firecracker and tough as nails, I can see where Nick gets his toughness.

  6. Graham and Virginia High are teams that you have to be ready to play. If they get on a roll they can put up some points. Graham gave Bluefield all they wanted and Virginia High surprised Richlands they had the biggest lead on us all year.

  7. I like this playoff format the best, so what if some undeserving teams make it. To me that is much better than deserving teams not making it. Remember the old Highlands district? The highlands district champ would make the playoffs with a 3-7 or 4-6 record while in a tough district some one could miss out with a 9-1 or 8-2 record. All the scrub teams are out in the first round anyway. It's like the NCAA tourney there are always some surprises it just makes it more fun. This year a team like Graham or RV could make some noise that wouldn't have made it in the past. Those young guys will get at least one more week of practice which will help them come next year. The schools make a little more money, the community gets a little more involved and excited. To me it is just a win win. The "best" team don't always win that is what makes it fun.

  8. I think the overall play of the AA teams in the area is getting better in general and also Abingdon in AAA is getting better. Tazewell, Graham, Grundy, Central are all getting better the last couple of years and now with RV coming along the future is brighter in SWVA.

  9. I think I may be the biggest complainer about officiating (one game the Bluefield game). I even think it should have been a no call, yes it could technically have been called but I would not have called it were I a ref. I think that if the Abingdon coaching staff is really telling the DBs to play the pass like that then they will get a few more of those calls. A defender should always turn towards the ball even if at the last second unless they are burnt and just trying to make up ground.
