I left the VT/UVa game early several years back on Black Friday. I could hear the roar from Lane Stadium as I was getting on the on ramp to get on 460. I looked at my girlfriend at the time and said, "Welp, guess we came back and won that one." I was so disgusted with myself for leaving that one early. But it looked for all the world that UVa had finally broken the streak and were going to win it. I never leave games early anymore. Even if its mercy rule.

That's not the best game I have ever witnessed though... 1993 Haysi 14, Powell Valley 12 Region D championship game would be the winner. Blaine Hackney's 99 yard punt return winner very late in the game through the mud and muck will forever be the greatest play in Haysi history. The two point conversion against Galax 2014 is close, but to have witnessed Blaine's miraculous return and stumbling the final five yards in the slippery stuff is the stuff of legends. Other gems I have witnessed: 2014 Haysi-Galax already talked about 2022 Patrick Henry-Rural Retreat -- just a week ago so fresh in the mind. Loved everything about this game. Wild shootout settled in overtime. 2022 Greeneville-Dobyns Bennett -- also fresh, but Tribe come from behind to almost knock off the #1 Greene Devils, similar to Haysi-Galax 2014, Indians score with 18 seconds left and go for two and the win, but come up one yard short 2005 Haysi-Powell Valley -- redtiger already touched on that one 2013 and 2014 Haysi-Honaker -- not really great games per se, but how many times do you see the state's top two ranked teams play each other 2015 Galax-Riverheads -- State title game also decided by a two point try that was unsuccessful by the Gladiators I'm sure there's others... but since the memory bank has never been wiped clean of that 1993 Haysi-PV game, it stands as my favorite of all time.

I missed most of what was truly the game of the night that night to catch the second half of this one as it was only 10 more miles up the road.... The game of the night that night was Haysi at Pound. I left in the second quarter after we got down 28-0 to the Wildcats after the PA announcer announced the Kelly and PV score. Went and caught the second half at Kelly, came back through Pound to see cars still lining up 83 in front of the high school and thought... "Wait! This game isn't over yet?!" I pulled into the Pound parking lot, got up to the fence just in time to see us score the game tying TD late in regulation. Haysi won in overtime 34-28. Thankfully that game has been preserved on YouTube after all these years.

Speaking of Jason, Michael and Freddy.... anyone ever found that Facebook channel "The Merkins"? That's some good stuff right there. If you want a good laugh, check it out. edit: They're on YouTube also....

Who is the PA announcer at Ridgeview now? It sounded kinda like Chris Davis, the PA announcer at UVa-Wise and sometimes VHSL official.

Lol Oh wait, I just remembered that Unicoi lady getting mad at me down at the Sullivan East basketball tournament a couple of years ago because I made fun of their girls coach for tossing the clipboard out on the court. Is that you lady? As for the Hill they only have fans when it's D-B week.

Yeah guys, and gals as case may be with Richlands mom, let's get it together and not ruin a great thing that we have here in the board. I mean where else can I go and talk crap on Union's rusty old Buick horn that doesn't intimidate anyone in the slightest?

The real difference in why Ridgeview won this game is simple... the Hammer's train horn or lack thereof. It definitely cost the Pack the game last year. The fact that his hammer sounded more like a rusty old Buick on its last legs Friday night made all the difference this time. 😄

What's your thoughts on the one state champion Kentucky crowns? I actually like that and wished all states did that for basketball. A Region 1 tournament would've been epic in Tennessee last year with D-B, Greeneville, SH and Mo East all involved and only one spot coming out of it.

Defnitely agree with that last part just based alone on watching the 15th Region tournament last year in person.

You're forgetting the trip to Legion Field in the regular season finale... I'm more worried for that one than I am the other two you mentioned... With the way Haysi got shafted at Tug Valley that one year and the way that Richlands folks talk about WV officials every time they play Bluefield at Mitchell, the Beavers already lead that game with Ridgeview 14-0 and the game doesn't even kickoff for three more weeks so that one worries me a little too, but Gate City moreso.

PH and Rural Retreat ranks right up there with one of the best high school football games I've ever seen. Maybe the greatest, since I am partial to the high scoring shootout. Definitely see these teams meeting again in the playoffs a few weeks down the road.

I saw PH and Rural Retreat last night. And I saw Northwood and Eastern Montgomery Thursday night. Not sure what the rest of 1D looks like other than those three Hogoheegee teams. Northwood didn't impress me much at all. PH and Rural Retreat to me looked very high level for 1A schools. Both teams have size and speed. As classic a game as that was last night, I wouldn't be surprised to see them meet again for the 1D title in the playoffs. Grundy will probably be in the mix as well.
