The SWD will be interesting as every program will have a new head coach. I think it will be a fun spring for that aspect alone.

What does kill me is how Region D schedules spring sports. It is ok for these schools to not schedule every athletic event on the same day at the same time.

Would love to hear their reasoning behind that.

It was initially done one of the many Covid protocols, At least in the SWD. (Don't ask me why, bc I still don't understand the reasoning). It is beyond time to change up the schedule dates and times.

Also, IMO, Saturdays should be set aside as at least a makeup date for when games are cancelled. I lost count of all then times a baseball/softball game was rained out by the evening with Saturday afternoon being perfect weather and no makeup game.

Couldn't they played at Richlands or Tazewell High.

Very easily could play at both. Multiple teams share stadiums. Key word is could. Snowflakes chance in Hades they would actually play at THS or RHS (even though it would save the county money). Tazewell would most likely need a turf field to accommodate all the extra games before then. But Graham will probably drop to Class 1, or even consolidate, before they ever get their home stadium, even though they have a perfect setup right at the high school. Just need bleachers and some updated equipment. That field is already better than most grass fields in SWVA.

Tazewell was a powerhouse long before the 80s. They were good in the 1950s, and very, very good in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The dropped off in the early 90s and haven't been the same since about 25 years.

I am not sure what the All Time Series is now with Richlands and Graham, but up until about 1994, even with the Richlands title of 1992 and Grahams title in the 60s and late 80s, Tazewell's led the All Time Series against both schools if I am not mistaken. Again, that is up until about 1994. A friend of mine from Tazewell's told me this a few years ago.

So, I am saying, Tazewell was once good and good for a long time...up until the early to mid 90s.

That's when baseball took over. Thanks Lou Perry. Singlehandedly killed football

  4. What nobody realizes is they need Tazewell to get better. And I stress need. Give them patience and it will work out. Do we really need doormat teams in our dwindling area? We need contenders. You want these games to be competitive. We want support from communities. We want 5,000 watching every game. I played and won at Tazewell. We are on the right track.

  5. Heard there was a unfamiliar face leading the Bulldogs in the weight room today!

Who? Or is it against your nature to say a name. Bc I consistently see your post do nothing beat beat around the bush. And to be frank, particularly to those that are actually interested in this topic, speak clearly or not at all.

  6. We were beaten by a very good Appo Team and have nothing to be ashamed about . We are the # 2 team in 2A .We were not at full strength against Appo ,but even if we had been ,it was still a stretch to win the game.We need to remember that not one of us wanted to win today as much as the Kids and the Coaches did. We will be good again in'17as will Appo, ,Union, Gate City ,[i am speaking collectively here] one of us can outpoint the Raiders and let them enjoy the trip to SWVA.-Our Home.PS -If you feel an urge to criticize the Blues or the Coaches-Will you apply for a coaching job if a vacancy occurs?

Congrats on the good season. Already looking forward to next year. I would be honored to be on that coaching staff an learn from the great minds like Mance. Would help me tremendously in future endeavors.

  7. And Abingdon's and Virginia High's playing fields were always really unique to me playing there late in the season when the Bermuda has turned tan away from green and they striped the field in black. Tazewell wants black in everything anyway, except for old school purist.

  8. I don't think you can beat a good grass field. I always thought Tazewell had a good field until the last couple of years. It doesn't seem as though they have been doing any maintenance on it. They also play soccer, middle school and little league football on that field as well. In my opinion soccer can be pretty rough on a field, then again that may be because I don't like soccer. The Richlands and Honaker fields are both very nice. They obviously have been taking good care of them unlike Mitchell. If the city of Galax is using Mitchell as an example to push for turf it's only because every time they play us there they run all over us. I'm in favor of a hay field next time yall come to Mitchell.

Played on Tazewell's field. It truly was a great field when it was football only. The soccer teams played at Lincolnshire park, now on the football field. I know that the dry weather has really hampered it this season. It is just overused. I know there were rumors and even plans to install Bermuda grass which is why the track was taken up. Now that we have this new fieldhouse and addressed the bathroom and concession issue, we are moving onto seating. Only field I know where visitor seating is better even being smaller. Suppose to replace the wooden bleachers. Then we should move onto a field. Mitchell stadium is in garbage shape. Richlands and Honaker's Emats fields are absolutely beautiful to see, play, and coach.

  9. One thing that needs to be straight here. Tazewell High School is fully accredited. They have posted the HIGHEST Math and English scores in the county for 2 consecutive years. They are the ONLY high school in Tazewell County that is Federally accredited. (Check the Division Report Cards if you want to verify this).

The administration currently at THS is excellent and the school is performing well despite the negative stereotype by folks in other parts of the county.

Tazewell County Schools just underwent an academic review for accreditation. THS was chosen to represent the county at the high school level and got very high marks (some of the highest the review board has ever given)

The academic team at THS was state runners up last season and are poised to do just as well or better this season.

THS performs well at non-athletic competitions of all sorts. I think a lot of schools should have the "culture" of THS.

Football is extra-curricular.... it's this other stuff that really matters.

This I appreciate. I went to Tazewell and we have always had this stereotype. My education was second to none. Sometimes it isn't always about what happens on Friday night. Yes football is a religion here with the highest population of it denomination but there are other things to life. Our baseball and softball teams compete and compete well. Soccer has picked up. Academic team and forensics place in state. All of the bashing is ridiculous. It's like we are the Cubs pre 2016. What would help is if we get back on track. 3 competitive teams in one county would be amazing just like the old days. Forget the coaching revolving door. Wyatt was a good coach and left bc of parent involvement ( our kryptonite). Smith didn't want to be here nor did we want him, but it was June or July and we needed a coach. He couldn't have cared less and I hate him as the VHigh coach when we rocked them for a region championship and wanted to ruin any bit of celebration we had. Tate couldn't control himself, keeping it G rated for the Christian folk. Allen is a good man and made his mistakes along the way. He will learn from it, Just like our community should. Let the coach do his job, including discipline.

Uncoachable kids become unemployable adults. Let's someone else be hard on your kids for once. You can't save them in the real world.

  10. Most certainly agree with this statement. I know the basketball team is going to be great but they won't be able to get going so soon bc this team should be playing in December. I can see them winning it all. I know they would like to match up with Richlands again. I know they wouldn't stop until the scoreboard hit 70 this time. I know if they play again, I will break out the cold gear and head up to watch the game.

  11. Just a rumor now. There is a former head coach that is interested. However, he wants to bring 2 of his former assistants with him. This guy is no puppet nor are the 2 assistants. All are tough, no nonsense, and hate to lose.

Former head coach at Tazewell? Or just head coach of another team? Either way, we could benefit.

  12. Dang. Tazewell missed a chance to name their field "hawg pit's dawg pit."

Haha good one. I would have let him plaster his face at the 50 yard line and named the field whatever he wanted. Guess we will stick with the Unofficial name of Witten Field. Hey this is how we roll down here.

  13. I was told that school board members want Dudley to be the next head coach. Probably because of his status/position would be my guess. I'm not going to defend or attack him as there are multiple facets to every story. But I know of one event in his history and was actually informed of something else today that I have yet to have time to research. I'll point out facts but I'm not going to speculate on things I don't know for fact about a topic like this. I can say that I know for a fact the majority of people I know wouldn't be happy with him as the head coach.

As a former player and coach, I'm interested in the facts.

  14. There is a lot more to it than what meets the eye. Talk with some of the people on the inside and learn the truth about what's going on. I'm not attacking him or defending him but truth is still truth no matter how ugly it can be.

With that said the middle school coach does need to be the one that gets the job. He fits the description of a Tony Palmer and would be an excellent fit to build off of and do it quickly as well. Now the bad news is there is already someone that "members" want to be the next coach. Again I'm not saying good or bad but I think they want him for the wrong reasons. Plus lots of controversy to ensue if he were to get it...

Can you elaborate a little more? The "members" thing and the controversy to ensue. I'm pretty interested in hearing.

  15. Yes the field does need a face lift. It is one of the last natural grass fields, the only grass playing surface servicing a school football team in this county mind you. The dry season really took a number on it. Many different fire departments helped to water the field. Also a lot of other games from middle school and little league. Facilities have been updated and are nice. Now it's time for the field. You think we are bad about running a coach off consistently, ask me or anyone in Tazewell about the guy that wanted to give us a new FieldTurf surface. All he asked was to have it named after him and we balked and ran him off. Just like what happened with the Presidency, we need a clean sweep of top power. I nominate myself to take over and would be glad to head that department.

New Facilities? Oh you mean the new locker room. Yeah it looked pretty nice. The playing field itself needs some work in my opinion. That has to be the hardest and lumpy field we played on this year. Even then it's not a bad place to watch a football game. Tazewell certainly deserves to be better than what they have been.
