Oh to be a fan again. I report next Friday morning for my first college scrimmage of spring ball, have a clinic to attend Saturday, and two more preseason clinics already on the calendar paid for with rooms booked. VHSL stuff usually won't start up until the end of July, but if you pull double duty like me, you literally get about 2 months away from football. I'm not complaining though, just providing some insight to those that are not aware of the work and sacrifice that goes into our avocation as officials. Remember, we don't drop out of the sky on Friday's and Saturday's.

Most people don’t hats off to you sir that is a job I do not want but the same people that crap on officials are the same ones yelling at the coaches to “run something different!”

Hasnt been discussed here that I see. Hows everybody feel about the hire? Could Johnson be the guy to get Northwood football back in shape? Remember they used to have a moderately decent talent pool.

Northwood has some talent running up and down the basketball court right now even though that doesn’t always translate to the football field if Johnson could get them out then that gives them a chance to make the playoffs is a very week region D

That’s just silly chilhowie has the speed to hang with anyone on turf. They earned the right to play at home and their field is unplayable and they had a chance to come play on a good field but they decided to play in Saltville. I hope this doesn’t hurt the players mind set for the game

Northwoods field does not look bad.  It just looks like dormant Bermuda.  It is crazy the twists and turns this has taken though.

Doesn’t change the fact that the back right corner of the end zone on the score board side is nothing but rocks and a giant tree roots

VHSL should have stood their ground with their approval and announcement on Tuesday that the game would be played at Chilhowie.

I mean both  Chilhowie and Northwood’s fields are in bad shape. The only plus of playing on Saltville is that they haven’t played there in 5 weeks but by the look of those pictures it looks rough. Emory would have been good for everyone involved but Chilhowie earn the right to play in Smyth County I just hope the last game for this talented senior class isn’t in Saltville...

  6. I mean any grass field in Smyth County is going to me a mess. It’s done nothing but rain and snow over the past 2 weeks. Hell you can’t play at Marion because even though both goal post and visitor bleachers are up the right field fence is already going across the 30 yard line. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to play at Emory with more parking, everyone can find a place to sit, and you don’t have to worry about getting any of your studs hurt playing on a muddy field! There were several times Sanchez got up limping last week in those same conditions idk why you would risk it. I think they win either way it will be fun to watch a full game without the jv team getting to play. But now you are stuck in the sink hole that is Saltville on a field that is just as bad as chilhowie and HAS A TREE ROOT AND ROCKS in the corner of the end zone... but hey you got a 5 minute shorter drive. I honestly how chilhowie makes it to Salem again but how about y’all focus on playing the game instead of where it is played.

OK before you get mad I am NOT from Ridgeview but was at the game.  Richlands D DID NOT and Could not stop Ridgeviews run.  Ridgeview ran all over Richlands.  Ridgeview just went away from the run for some unknown reason.  I do agree that the QB was not good enough to be throwing the ball as much as they did yesterday.  Ridgeview should have won by 2 td's but shot themselves in the foot twice inside the 10 with fumbles.  Adkins had over 200 yds on Richlands alone so....And who knows what Sexton would have had if they feed him the ball more.  But hats off to both programs on a great year.

I’m not on here to get mad brother. I unfortunately could not make the game and have no ties to either school I just know Richlands had to do enough to slow them down at least to the point where they felt like they needed to put the ball in air. Richlands is a very well coached team and may not have the athletes other schools do but have good smart football players and in the playoffs that wins. If Ridgeview was able to run the ball like that they should have stayed on the ground. Sounds like Richlands was able to move the ball better than Ridgeview but you are right hats off to both teams on great season.

  8. Chilhowie has too many play makers for PH. The only thing that makes this game close is if chilhowie over looks a talented PH bunch. Even if they do I think chilhowie is just too good and will pull away in the second half. Both teams are having great season though hats off to both staffs and those kids.

Ridgeview was one dimensional. Richlands’ D has been on fire since the Graham loss, and they did a good job of keeping 6 and 22 in check for most of the game. You knew they were going to get theirs, but you just had to stop them from constantly getting going.

Once the 4th rolled around, RV had to pass and that’s just not their strength.

Sexton had maybe 6-7 carries and they were all jet sweeps. I understand RV fans complaints this season.

Coaching was a big factor. Richlands looked poised and you could tell they’ve been in these big games before.  RV seemed to panic a little bit in the 2nd half.

Hats off to the Pack. That was a very good team that the Blues upset. Also, that was my first time on the Ridge, and that place is AMAZING. Top notch facilities.

I told y’all Richlands was going to be able to slow down that run game and Ridgeview did not have the quarterback to win a playoff game if they had to throw. Richlands seems to have a lot to play for with the tragedies the last few weeks. When you have a team that has an entire town behind them and they have great football player and they are well coached they are going to be hard to beat regardless of their play off seed.

Not sure about that....Adkins may have the best hands on the team Richlands may want to put there best cover man on him

I am not denying his ability to catch but most high school offensives don’t throw the ball the the back unless it is a screen or a swing and you can catch it all day but if you have a backer in your back pocket it will not do you any good.

  11. 17 hours ago, Counts said:

RV is without a doubt a better running than passing team but yes they can and have hurt team loading up the box.....add to that the coverage mentioned would leave Adkins in 1 on 1 coverage out of the backfield vs a LB which is a quick way to pad your passing stats.

All in all it should be a heck of a game. Both coaching staffs are solid game planners will be interesting what new wrinkles each team comes up with for the game

I’m sure ever lineback going to know where Adkins is at all times and I think Richlands has athletic enough backers to cover him. But I do agree with it should be a heck of a game and chess match between these 2 staffs.

  12. 5 hours ago, Counts said:

I am sure that Richlands will try to load the box but RV is not running out of a 2 TE full house so the only way to get the box loaded is to leave someone uncovered.

Even in 10 personal (1 back 4 receivers) Richlands can easily go cover 0 and press all 4 guys out wide and leave 7 in the box. That leaves 5 to block 7 which is tough to do. If Ridgeview goes 3x1 which they like to do a lot that brings the DB covering #3 closer to the box making him another run defender. Ridgeview also loves split backs which would in turn bring an 8th body in the box. If you run a spread offense but can’t hurt anyone with the pass it’s not hard to stop the run. With that being said they still have to tackle the big kid and catch the quick one.

They have 4 RB's.  Two of which did not play last season. Booker(Transfer back from Richlands) and Chinault (Sat out last season).  Reed was lost to injury early in the season last year and I believe Lester was hurt towards the end of the season last year.

All 4 are very good backs and all 4 are healthy.

Replying to Jags about the runningback being back.  Sorry, didn't quote your message.

Graham has had a stable of athletes the last few years for sure RB, DB, WR, and QB but I knew some of them there hurt or didn’t play last year that’s all I was saying

Still think last years Union/graham game had more talent than a Ridgeview/graham matchup would. Not even close if we are being real. Graham lost the Cooke speedster. Union lost Mitchell, Owens, Stidham and Qualls just to name a few. All had multiple offers. Not on the level of VT or Michigan St (isn’t that where Cooke landed?). My point is, this area, SwVA has seen a nice bit of talent in bulk recently. Throw in mcclung from gate city to the mix just to sweeten the pot.

That is true I forgot about how loaded Union was last year and Cooke was a talent (he might have ended up at Marshall). But Graham’s entire secondary could probably play on Saturday not all d1 but should at least get some looks and according to the paper the Atkins kid has everyone drooling over him and I’m sure his exposure has helped some of his talented teammates out this season. Graham also didn’t have their stud running back that got hurt early in the season last year who is back for this match up if it happens.

Best to both teams and Ridgeview should win, but this is the playoffs and Mance will have the Blues ready and fired up.  Ridgeview will have to play their best, mistake free game to come away with a win.  Best of luck to both teams, but Richlands pulls the upset with a late field goal.  27-24

Agreed and Richlands has a weapon at kicker that could put them over the top in this one

Just curious has Ridgeview been forced to pass this season? Has a team showed up and said you aren't running the ball and made them throw? I have heard a lot about the running game but not so much the pass i'm sure with the record they have they aren't one dimensional just wanted to hear from people that have seen them play.

Richlands will do everything in their power to shut down the run and If they can I don’t think Ridgeview has the quarter back to win a playoff game.

Not so sure I can agree sir. Your research is second to none. But we may want to table the convo until after next week. Ridgeview has a solid D1 prospect of their own. Very good chance y’all meet them if ya make it out of the Park. Last years Union game is the only time I’ve seen these two young men from Graham play. And they were non factors. And I say that, with respect, due to a vary solid Union defense that supposedly didn’t match up speed wise to that Graham team. Can Allen has next level talent and I look forward to seeing his progress.

If that happens that game will feature the best athletes that SWVA has seen on the same field in while. Lester is a pure football that makes plays where ever he is on the field. Allen is a D1 talent on defense that throws the ball some. The two headed monster that ridgeview has in the backfield is also good I still give the nod to graham on this one mostly because of what those 2 guys are able to do on both sides of the ball.
