At Haysi Coach Colley signaled in the formation while a Back ran in the play. Worked well enough.
A lot of teams send in a numerical play # with a color code. So on the wrist bands they will have Red, White, and Blue - 21 Red may be Outside Zone, 21 Blue may be QB Counter, and 21 White may be Slot Bubble. OC signals in the formation and calls 21, as long as the player/s know which color we are on for this possession its fairly difficult for the defense to steal calls.
A couple of seasons ago Eastside was signaling in things, seems like they had 3 coaches signaling things in (1 live, 2 dummy) and a couple of coaches working picture flip boards. Five coaches to signal in plays that didnt work, it was a mess.
Honestly wristband is the way to go. You can change numbers every week. You can send a player in with the number, signal it in, hold up numbers, or just yell it out. It takes more time for coaches to make said wrist band but that is the biggest down side. It is a lot better than having 5 coaches just to call your offense!
Just looking at the simple play-calling that's going on, it shouldn't be that difficult to create signs to save the running and control the speed of the game when need be.
The more simple they are the easier that are to steal. If they other side has a coach looking at that kind of stuff which I am sure most teams do. Usually you would have a live guy and at least one dummy guy sometimes 2 but now you have 3 coaches just sending in plays for offense you got 2 coaches in the box and at least 2 on defense.. unless you are Union and have 45 "coaches" on the side line you run out of coaches quick
There are pros and cons to both. Calling the play in the huddle is one way to make sure that everyone is on the same page. It does tend to take more time off the clock so if you are in a hurry that is not good. No huddle with signals or wristbands is great if you want to go a little bit faster but you increase the chance of kids not being on the same page (these are 15-18 year olds we are talking about). On top of that singles are pretty easy to steal so the other team could figure out whats coming and you are not only asking these kids to learn play names but also the single that goes with it.
I would say no huddle is much faster and you get less delay of game penalties but I have noticed over the year that officials tend to start that play clock later if a team is huddling. So I guess that just depends on the crew

Don’t leave Marion out of that conversation. They graduated a lot but are still rolling as of late. Not play great competition but I think they have only lost twice.
Not in SWVA area but all ive heard is Altavista and Parry McClure, also wondering who will be the head coach of the combining Alleghany and Covington HS.
I wonder if anyone in the area would go after those jobs causing a domino effect like what has happened in the past.
I would say Union overall played well considering what they have. I think they caught Central at the right time or they wouldn't have gotten that W. The next time they play each other might be a little different. You could see on paper that Lebanon was going to hard to deal with and certainly are.
The lost to Chilhowie honestly stunned me. I know Chilhowie is a very well coached team and they have a lot of size I just didnt see them being able to compete with Union
I would say Unions overall record. They are doing just fine in the region but loses to Lebanon and Chilhowie where big surprises considering what they have been the last few years.
I think it would be pretty cool idea to have a crossover with M7 and SWD. 3 team rotation so Graham would play Union Lee and Wise on a 2 year cycle and Tazewell would play Ridgeview Battle and Gate city then they switch. That would keep teams from scheduling weaker 1A schedules non conference

I’ve heard Chilhowie is not gonna make a move. They are going to let Robinson do baseball football and AD. As far as northwood goes I would have to agree with you on that one. Their defense was solid but the offense was hard to watch
I see your point, but I would have to vote Jones for biggest impact on his team. Without him, they don't outscore anyone because they definitely don't play defense.
Ive been on the Jones bandwagon all year and I think he is a great play but I would still lean towards Brown just because even though Jones did a lot of the heavy lifting he still had some help with Poku and Worley outside and the being able to hand the ball off to Burks to get some tough yards. Now I think VA high is 6-4 or 5-5 without Jones because he makes take big of a difference. Honestly Richlands would have had a hard time winning a game without Brown. The Tazewell game would have been a running clock in the second half if he was not playing.
My POY is the best football each time he puts on a helmet. It also is the most impactfull on both sides. It also comes down to off the field decisions if the contest is close with another player who might have had an off the field issue that prevented him from helping his team for a game or two. Connor Roberts, not Jones, not Clements, not Brown, nor Creasy, nor Harris...but Roberts is the best football player in the SWD. Only my opinion. We could argue this all week and all month long.
I agree Roberts is a freaking beast! Best player and most impactfull. If im not mistaken they do offensive and defensive POY not just one overall POY. I would bet Roberts get defensive and Clements gets Offensive. And for a lineman to get any POY would be huge considering the lack of love they get especially on the offensive side of the ball.
I don't know if he is their best player or not. I don't think Graham missed a beat when he was not playing.
It depended on what you define POY as. If POY to you is the best football player on the field every time he put a helmet on then is goes to Clements that kid is pretty special. If POY to you is has the biggest impact on a team then its Brown from Richlands and I really dont think its close either way.
Am I the only one who thinks that SWD MVP should actually be Dylan Brown? He excelled at two different positions on a subpar team and little to no help doing so.
I pull him on my list as deserving and the SWD has done something like that before in other sports. Last years girls soccer POY was from Marion and they went 0-8 in district play. Now they team did end up making little run and making it to the region tournament but that is easier to do in sport not football
You are exactly right on the vote total. It favors the M7, but I think it works itself out in the Region. I will almost guarantee Jones will be SWD qb if they don’t go co 1 team qbs. I think that vote will fall 3-2 in SWD.
Yes I think Jones has a great shot I dont think they will go co 1 because that doesnt look as good moving on to all region voting but I dont think I will matter at that position. The only team that really got to see him play a full game in person was Central and from the newpaper write up he pretty much put the team on his back for that win. That could be the deciding vote there.
District Meetings are seperate, and Region 2D meeting isn't until after Thanksgiving break. It's always fun to read the "ACCOLADE" threads. I am sure alot of bartering and discussions will be had.
Yeah thats what I was saying. SWD meets today all region would follow after that. Those teams arnt supposed to be released to the public until after everyone that has a kid on that team in eliminated. But for sure there is bond to be a lot of disagreement when these teams come out. Its going to get real fun when we get to all region because the Mountain 7 will have 6 votes compared to the SWD only having 5. Which mean IF 1st team QB comes down to Creasey and O'Quinn then there is a good chance O'Quinn gets it just because the mountain 7 have more votes. Unless SWD has stats that are way better than the M7 kid the M7 kid is going to get the nod every time. Until Lebanon comes back and evens those numbers back out
We might get to see 2D today. It’s my understanding they are meeting today to choose districts.
All district wont be released until every team in the district is out of post season play. Same goes with all region. So unless some coaches get loose lipped we wont know anything until SWD is eliminated from the playoffs. You are right though coaches do meet today to hash all that out
I agree he is good. There are a lot of teams that would take him but I dont think he is the best QB in the district. Those number are also inflated by the air raid system they run along with jet sweeps they give to Harris that counts as a pass because he under hands the ball 6 inches to his "receiver". Like I said he is a good player but those numbers would not be as high if he played for anyone else. I think Clements will end up getting because he is the best player on the best team. After him I would go Jones, Brown, then Harris/Creasey
