I remember playing in a travel ball tournament in Tennessee when I was in 5th grade. We lost to a team from Kingsport 124-16 in the quarterfinals.

No surprise, that team made it to the championship and the opponent for that game just walked out, shook hands and left.

Would be funny if that is what John Marshall opponents did as a sign of protest.

I know for a fact that someone has offered to pay the fine for Radford if they make it that far to then not show up.  I know that won't happen but the fine would be paid for.

  2. Agree on GW.  I was really impressed with them.  Radford exposed them a little by going to a zone some in the second half and also the GW transition defense in the second half broke down.  GW only scored 3 points in the 3rd qtr and that was in the last 30 seconds.   I think GW will contend for a title.   Radford only returns three starters from last year and only 4 with any decent playing time.  3 players from last year decided not to play including Clark who was a starter last year.   They will be good because of defense.  I think Floyd can beat them if Radford has an off night.  I haven't seen Martinsville yet but sounds like they will be good.  None of it matters because they are all playing for second unfortunately.

Any of you all have any impressive stats for local players in C and D this year?

I think Radfords QB had over 40 touchdowns thrown and 1 int. How many passing and receiving yards for Tazewells duo, and Ridgeview with O'Quinn and Beavers/Hill/counts? How many did Clements end up with for the season?

Appo fans, what about Pennix and rushing yds, or Patrick Henry and their outstanding running back, Grundy's Scammell, etc.

Clark was 166 of 241 (69%) for 2972 yards.  44 TDs and only 1 INT.  RHS season records for completions, yardage and passing TDs.    Also had 467 yards rushing and 8 rushing TDs.  Parker Prioleau had 1011 receiving yards on 62 receptions which were both RHS season records.  Baylor ended up with 972 yards on 45 catches an 17 TDs.  He ended up second in the RHS records for receiving yards in a season.  The third receiver ended up 9th for yardage for a season so 3 receivers made the top 10 all time for RHS for receiving yards and all in one season.

  4. My personal belief is that the only reason to hold a kid back is for a maturity or intellectual reason.   Sports is not a reason to delay.   At the time you are making that decision you have very little idea of how they will compete.  The other side is that there are prep schools for most sports so if the kid needs another year to develop athletically, then they can get it that way IMO.

With Pennix out, I would tend to favor Radford in this matchup.  Radford has speed on top of speed, but the lineplay is questionable.  I think Radford gets enough big plays to win it.  34-27

I will be shocked if he doesn't play.  I was told he played after the injury happened but that might not be true.

  6. Radford's D line bent but didn't brake.  Galax ran Tucker 40 times and he was worn out by half time.  I think if they can give him more breaks then he would be more effective later in the game.  Radford also exposed a weakness with Galax not being able to pass.  Galax only 12 yards passing and 2 INT.   I was surprised they didn't at least try to pass being down 3 scores early in the 4th quarter.  they continued to run and running time off the clock.

  7. This game will come down to line play.  If Radford Oline can give Clark time, then Radford will score lots.  If Radford Dline can stop the run then it will be a big day for Radford.  BIG ifs.  I expect this to be a high scoring game with probably Radford getting to a quick lead and Galax making a run in the second half to make it a game.

Coach, also known for weak scheduling!  Doesn't like to play real competiton, like a "GRAHAM" or "UNION" would!

This schedule was set 2 years ago before Christ was even named the coach so don't blame him. You can blame the AD.   It actually isn't that weak either.  Ft Chiswell is the only bad team non-conference team.  two of them are top Class 1 programs, and Cburg is class 3.  One problem that happens is the bigger schools don't want to play smaller schools because the points aren't worth it.  The Radford basketball program struggles to get bigger schools to play us because they don't want to lose and it isn't worth any points.  Blacksburg and Christiansburg should be regulars but they won't play us in basketball.

OK, if you want to get super technical, Radford had a couple of runs that weren’t net negative plays.  But they were few and far between.  It’s not a coincidence that 0 of Radford’s points came on running plays.  Radford’s scores were the result of poor communication and execution in the secondary coupled with your D1 prospect.  That’s the gist of what I’m saying here.

I have the film that shows Jashon Taylor, a freshman, pancaking and driving your LG into the turf.  And I have the film that shows Tazewell’s 4-man front gobbling up your RB on a simple draw play.  The O-Line performed respectably in pass protection, too.  They gave Creasy more than enough time to make his reads.  Not Creasy’s best performance, but he’s a sophomore going against a team that should be playing past the first weekend of the playoffs.

With what I do on Friday nights, I watch film during the week to prepare.  If I could upload the clips here, I would.  🤷

Look, There is no point going tit for tat on this.  the original post made it sound like Radford's line was terrible which wasn't what I saw nor what the video or stats showed.  Tazwell has some good players and isn't a bad team.  I thought it was misleading to say Radford's line got manhandled when you look at the first team play.

  10. 2 hours ago, UVAObserver said:

Radford literally could not run on Tazewell, and some plays were almost comical at how much Tazewell manhandled their line.  And Radford’s line ain’t bad.  Hard to make any definitive statements from a one-off scrimmage, but it can be safely said that the line is significantly improved.  I’m excited for tomorrow night for a whole host of reasons.

if you look at the first two series of first teams vs first teams.  Radford's first run was 5 yards and second run was 10 yards to the goalline.  Radford QB was held short of the goalline on a run to the outside and then the RB was held short before scoring on the next play.  Tazwell really never got a hand on our QB even though he was flushed out of the pocket.   On the flip side, Tazwell's first run was for -1 yard.  Second was for 2 yards.  QB kept for no gain and then was sacked on the last play.  I wouldn't say Tazwell manhandled Radford at the line of scrimmage.  And not really on the second and third teams either.  the line might be improved but IMO didn't manhandle the Radford line.

Pulaski loses some of it's best and brightest to Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Radford. Those kids have options considering the geography and infrastructure (roads) leading to better opportunities. Until they close the gap on those surrounding opportunities, they will never reach past glory, regardless of who the coach is. That's just my opinion.

Radford has had a few kids from Pulaski over the past few years but I don't think there are any this year.  There was one kid that came and did some workouts this summer but isn't at Radford practices now.

I just watched the game and the kids at John Marshall can play. Regardless of how the team was set up, you can't take anything away from the kids.

I agree. when QMR came through Radford, I thought he should be getting more looks from a higher level but getting to watch some of these guys up close, there is a world of difference.  Can't say enough about how talented that JM team is.

I guess elbows have somehow become legal.  James River is 4 for 4 on uncalled elbows to the face.  I would give em 2 free one's, then somebody is getting decked.  Sorry, just my nature.

yes, and it never got called against Radford either.

  14. 5 hours ago, BandanaVTDavis4321 said:

Guess who rises to the occasion? Radford stuns James River 41-40 and wins the region. For all the talk about JR and how dominant they have been, Radford finds a way.  If you are a Union fan, you don't want that score imo. Union beat Radford last year and the matchup is more favorable with Radford than it is James River.  James River will likely be coming to Big Stone Gap next week to battle the Bears.

and Radford didn't have their leading scorer.  River didn't substitute and it caught up to them.  They will be rested and motivated for Region D opponent.  JR starting 5 is really really good.

  15. I had interesting conversation with someone that said that the scoring title should actually belong to Caleb Tanner.  he had to play against Radford 17 times.  he averaged over 35/game normally and only 17 points/game against radford.  That's at least another 221 points that Caleb missed out on because he had to play a Cormany defense.

Radford mopped the floor with Appo tonight.

Fort Chiswell crushed G.Wythe last night. Fort Chiswell is 20-4 on the season. The problem for the Fort is....Auburn. Parry McCluer will likely win 1C, but Auburn has a very solid team and is likely the 2nd best team in 1C. Fort plays Auburn tomorrow (Sat).

McCluer, in their 3rd contest of the season with Narrows took the Green Wave to the shed by a score of 58-24 tonight.

Alleghany beat Glenvar tonight. Alleghany isn't bad. They played James River a little over a week ago and only lost by 7 points.  Most probably would agree it's James River heads above everyone in 2C and they will be 1 of the 2 to advance to state out of the region. All year, Radford, Glenvar, and Martinsville were in the discussion as to who gets that 2 spot out of the region, but Alleghany probably should also be in the conversation.

Alleghany would probably win the mountain side.   I will be surprised but not shocked if they beat James River.

Radcat, the best 2 teams will probably go. JR and Radford will almost assuredly be the 2 teams. Once they get to the final of both sides of the bracket they will cross bracket then. JR and Radford will beat both teams out of the other side, probably Floyd Co and Martinsville if there is no upsets.

oh, okay, that makes it a little more okay.  I wish they would publish brackets in advance so people could see what is going on instead of waiting until the day before.  Thank you for the clarification!

I don't disagree the Three Rivers is the best fit, but it's more complicated and nuanced than that. Simply put, the Three Rivers District (along with 1C and 2C) as a whole will have some decisions to make in the next 5 years. Carroll isn't the only school likely to change divisions. The Alleghany/Covington consolidation is going to place the new school squarely in the middle of the 3A pack with around 1,000 students. Floyd County enrollment is dropping about as fast as Carroll, if not faster. Floyd has lost over 200 students in the past 5 years and has already reached out to the MED to have "discussions." Radford hovers around the 1A/2A cutoff every year. James River has already dwindled to fewer students than the largest handful of 1A schools. They are listed at 476 on the Virginia DOE website for this school year. Glenvar is growing and are in the neighborhood of 650 right now.

TRD can stay as is even with schools changing classification, but several schools aren't pleased with the current set-up and are looking for a change. With this much shuffling between classifications coming in he next few years, it's going to throw Region C - Class 1 and 2 into disarray. Thus, in my opinion, changes are coming soon.

Agree, and with the way they are creating the sub-regions for the Region C tourney makes no sense.  There has to be a better way.  They put the top 5 or 6 teams on one side and the other side has terrible teams.  Region C will not be sending they best two teams to the state tourney which is dumb.

Radford 43, Glenvar 40.  Glenvar led 38-34 with about a minute and 1/2 left, and Radford outscored them 9 to 2 in the last minute and 1/2.  Ttied at 40,  Radford hits a 3 pointer than spun up on the rim before the ball went in as time expired.  Game was played at Glenvar.  Glenvar is a very good team.  Radford has that it factor in Region C.  They've won so many times over the past few years that teams like Glenvar, which is equally talented, seem to get a little tense when playing them.  The same thing with James River against Radford earlier in the season.  Radford is one tough out and loaded with youth, lots of sophomores.  Radford will actually be a better basketball team next year with what they return, and they should be an even better basketball team the following year with the sophomores they have.  This year, Radford has a good chance to represent the west this year and play for a state title, but the Bears of Union and James River are right there with them, and Glenvar probably is also.  The next two seasons though, Radford might be the clear favorite in the west as that program is loaded in talent for at least the next two seasons, and another future All-State type player is on the Radford squad, a sophomore this year with the last name of Cormany.  I would have to watch the NFHS clip again to be certain, but I think he is the one who his the shot tonight to beat Glenvar.

Landen Clark took the last shot.  Radford is loaded with sophomores.  only one senior is a major contributor.  top three in most categories are sophomores.  Radford needs to develop better post play but yes they should be good the next two years.  Radford was up 10 late in the third qtr.  Their inexperience showed as poor shot selection let Glenvar back in the game.

Probably the two best teams in Region C, and what could be a preview of the Region Championship.  Round two for the Bobcats and Boys from Buchanan. This time, James River comes back to Radford.  Game is on NFHS, Wednesday night at 7 pm.

A Radford win puts them in the driver seat for Three Rivers.  Radford didn't play well against Glenvar on Monday.  James River has to be hyped for this game.  Of course everybody brings their "A" game for Radford.  I expect a good one.

  21. I think you hit it perfectly for 2C.  Radford's core is sophomores mostly with one senior having an impact.  They have some ups and downs because of that youth but they have tons of talent and the defense that they bring is strong and will only get better.  even if they can beat JR in the second game, they probably will see them in the regional and beating a third time would be next to impossible.  JR has tons of talent and experience.  I expect them to get at least one against Radford this year.  Floyd is talented too.   They just don't play defense hard enough.  I haven't seen Mville or the others yet to have an opinion on them.
