  1. The coaching staff quite obviously used the game as a developmental session, which I think is the correct move in a game that ultimately means nothing in the standings. I was impressed with Chilhowie’s reserves, especially their QB, who made some timely reads and throws. The future looks pretty bright for their crew.
  2. Last 2 games have been decided by 1 total point. Each team is 1-1, having won on the opponent’s field. Hard to be closer than that. And the poster to which you replied is on some form of illicit substance if he thinks the “coaching issue” hasn’t been resolved. Barring some abject disaster, this season’s graduating class will be the first graduating class since 2009 to come out of Tazewell with a winning overall record (and that includes the 2020 season being shortened, where Tazewell would have gone 9-3 at very worst). Tazewell should almost certainly make the playoffs for a 4th straight year, which they have never done before. Future is bright.
  3. Either this person was born in 1988, or graduated in 1988. Either way, I can’t imagine being 34 years old or 52 years old and thinking this is worthy of memorializing on the internet.
  4. OK, if you want to get super technical, Radford had a couple of runs that weren’t net negative plays. But they were few and far between. It’s not a coincidence that 0 of Radford’s points came on running plays. Radford’s scores were the result of poor communication and execution in the secondary coupled with your D1 prospect. That’s the gist of what I’m saying here. I have the film that shows Jashon Taylor, a freshman, pancaking and driving your LG into the turf. And I have the film that shows Tazewell’s 4-man front gobbling up your RB on a simple draw play. The O-Line performed respectably in pass protection, too. They gave Creasy more than enough time to make his reads. Not Creasy’s best performance, but he’s a sophomore going against a team that should be playing past the first weekend of the playoffs. With what I do on Friday nights, I watch film during the week to prepare. If I could upload the clips here, I would. 🤷
  5. Radford literally could not run on Tazewell, and some plays were almost comical at how much Tazewell manhandled their line. And Radford’s line ain’t bad. Hard to make any definitive statements from a one-off scrimmage, but it can be safely said that the line is significantly improved. I’m excited for tomorrow night for a whole host of reasons.
  6. Finn Moss (FR). He’ll be a solid contributor in time, but obviously’s not on Creasy’s level. He’ll be QBing the JV squad through its schedule.
  7. My oldest played 1 year in U-4. Didn’t return because of baseball and some problems we had with management there, but on game days, that place is packed like sardines.
  8. Creasy needs to work on looking for the big hitter when teams gang up to take away Harris. On several plays, Radford ran single-high safety and committed the cardinal sin of allowing an uninterrupted release to the WR. If Creasy recognizes that and hits the WR in stride (which he’s more than capable of doing), it’s an automatic TD. Harris is resting a little, mending some wear and tear from 7-on-7s, hence the limited play and limited targets. Tazewell’s run defense was pretty doggone impressive. That was a huge problem last year: Tazewell couldn’t get teams off the field who set up the run well. That problem looked solved. As you say, the big plays were on secondary novice and miscommunication leading to broken big gainers. Certainly much to work on, but the margin didn’t seem as lopsided as the numbers made it look. The pieces are there: they just have to click.
  9. Graham’s problem is the lack of culture, and any coach who settles in there better not care about the W/L record for 5-6 years. Kids in Bluefield are finally starting to play travel ball and change that culture, but it’s going to take time. There is some promise for the future though.
  10. Buchanan and Mabe got a bunch of work last season, and hopefully Hungate does as well!
  11. I’ve seen the videos. 6’2” is overstating it and 320 is understating it. A better initial burst than you’d expect from a kid that size, but it’s very obvious he’s going to have to cut some weight, else he’s going to be walking around for 3/4 of the game with his hands on his hips. His ceiling is crazy high, though, if he gets his body right.
  12. How much you want to lay on Riverheads -70?
  13. Tazewell ended the 2017 season with 17 players. That’s not enough to be competitive with 1A teams, much less 2A teams. It takes 45+ to have the depth to run what someone would think as a “real practice”, not using tackling dummies or trash cans to simulate players. There’s enough for a bonafide JV program, which will boost development that much more. The program is light years beyond where it was then, and it’s because of that slow, incremental progress. Tazewell’s program was at a natural disadvantage compared to its in-county peers because it was allowed to fall into disrepair for the better part of a generation. The administration and coaching staff got on the same page, and both truly “get it” when it comes to building a program. Two huge pieces have been fixed this year alone. One, as you say, was hiring Brandon McDaniel for the baseball job. That was the correct move in a multitude of ways, not least of which is breaking the “baseball only” culture that had set up shop. The second was a remodeling of the boosters paradigm, which has already paid dividends and will do so even more in the future. I truly think the best is yet to come.
  14. I watched a little as well, and I can’t agree with this take. The portion I saw had them broken down into position groups, working technique and conditioning. That’s not exactly the most emotionally charged, sexiest part of practice. And Tazewell’s staff isn’t the most yellingest, screamingest staff to begin with. Pads don’t go on until next week. That’s when the intensity should, and will, ratchet up.
  15. My freshman year, Graham had 121 out of a population of 501. In related news, we went to Disney that year. Next year, 72 of 488, but it built back up to 100 the following 2 years.
  16. That’s their culture. In my day, it was nothing to have that kind of ratio in the school’s marching band (particularly Graham and Richlands).
  17. Tazewell has 44 out today with another 6 expected back shortly from vacations, etc. Very happy to see strong turnout.
  18. Unpossible! Teams never, ever hold their best players out for any reason for these 7-on-7 scrimmages. The results of these 7-on-7 scrimmages translate perfectly, with causation, to regular season results!
  19. Aside from Chilhowie's 2 year run, Region D hasn't sent a team to Salem in 1A since 2012.
  20. Again, Tazewell had every intention to do so until MV left Tazewell in the lurch. That, and your team’s antics in 2021, burned the bridges. Best of luck this season and in the future.
  21. Tazewell’s line should be considerably improved. They return everyone and add 2 legitimate freshmen who may very well start Day 1. So long as Creasy is under center, Tazewell will be pass-first. But I don’t expect the running game to be a total liability this year.
  22. Tazewell had 3 other receivers with over 40 receptions, y’know? One of them had 8 TDs to Harris’s 11. It’s not as if Harris was receiving the ball to the exclusion of everyone else. Tazewell has a generationally-good QB and a WR that’s going to one of the nation’s premier FCS programs. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to exploit that connection.
  23. It's amazing how different the sport of football was in that era. I'd love to drop a Cassius Harris or Brandon Beavers in 1979 just to see what kind of havoc they'd wreak. The margins between success and failure are razor thin today,
  24. Very competitive tournament. A lot of skill talent in SWVA this year. Tazewell went 2-1 in pool play. Beat Sullivan East 21-14. Lost to Union 14-7 on the final play of the game. Beat Richlands 23-21 in a game that really wasn't that close (Richlands scored in the final minute to cut the deficit to 2). Tazewell made the semifinals in bracket play. Blew out Sullivan East 27-0, then lost to Union again in the semis. Tazewell matched up better with Richlands but not as well with Union, but Richlands matched up better with Union.
