This week Bassett host Carroll Co., Magna Vista host Heritage and Martinsville travels to Brookville to take on the Bees. Tough opening games for all three teams.

Martinsville dominated thru the 70's and 80's then two county schools were merged together to become Magna Vista and they were the team to beat in the 90's. Another county school, Fieldale Collinsville, was merged into Bassett and they have had the powerhouse for several years now.

Magna Vista had a good JV team last year and they should be improved. Martinsville's new coach is installing a new offense and has about 50 players which is about 20 more than last year. The Piedmont will be a toss up between Bassett, MV and Martinsville. I don't think any of them will get far in the playoffs.

Can't wait until the Government slaps a carbon tax onto our electric bill.

Excellent post G-Man. I voted for McCain but to be honest I wasn't all that thrilled with him. Don't get me wrong, McCain is a good man and served his country admirably but he didn't really inspire me politically speaking. The GOP needs someone with the charisma and political skills of a Reagan. The conservative movement really doesn't have any leadership at present IMO.

I noticed Bassett is not in the top ten. They lost half their team from last year and that's not an exaggeration. I think they graduated 27 seniors.

Uva started Marc Verica last year. Is he not in the running for the starting QB job?

Martinsville could possibly join the Dogwood Dist. where Gretna, Dan River and Chatham now play. Patrick Co. could possibly play in the same Dist. as Floyd Co. but I'm not sure of the name. GW Danville would be a good fit for Magna Vista and Bassett in the Piedmont District.

Mantiply is 6'5" and will play for Va. Tech next year. The last statistics I saw he had amassed a 22-1 record, a 1.12 ERA and 239 strikeouts in 169 innings spanning a three-year varsity career.

Tunstall is a baseball school. Soccer really isn't their game but interest in the sport seems to be growing in the Piedmont District. As far as the fans go I think every school has it's jerks but they stand out more when they are rooting for the other team.

I graduated with Bobby Dalton and he was a great guy and an outstanding football player. He knows football but more importantly he has a good relationship with the students and the community. From my understanding Martinsville has a lot of talent walking the halls but don't play football. I think Dalton will get a lot of those guys out of the halls and onto the football field. Bobby has the potential to rebuild the Bulldog program but only time will tell.

From the article in the paper Foutz's dad was a coach at Franklin Co. for ten years and Matt Foutz graduated from there. I guess when the opportunity came knocking he took advantage of it. How the Martinsville players felt about him I'm really not close enough to the situation to say. I would assume most of them liked Foutz but I'm sure some didn't and that's probably true for most coaches everywhere.

This Piedmont team went 7-4 against larger schools using this bazaar offense. Like it or not they seem to be having some success with the "A-11".

It would make it tough for defenses that like to put 8 or 9 men in the box.

I heard that MV's future warriors at Laurel Park went undefeated in football last year. If that's true then many of those kids will be incoming freshman at Magna Vista this year which means the Warriors talent level might be about to rise.

It's good to hear that Martinsville has a lot of kids turning out in the weight room. I feel like Matt Foutz will energize the program again. Taylor Edwards was a good coach but I think he got burnout after 20 some years of coaching.

Bassett should be the team to beat in 08 but I don't think they will be quite as strong this year. The Bengals lose their entire backfield and a lot of beef is gone from the lines. Magna Vista has no where to go but up and with their new coach they should be much improved. Martinsville lost a lot of seniors and will probably be playing quite a few sophmores this year. The Bulldogs added McMichael High School to their schedule and will continued to play tough opponents like #1 ranked Gretna. It might be a long season for the Dogs. Tunstall and Patrick Co. should be improved.

Troy Wells is a super nice man and knows his stuff and should be a good fit for HV. It will be interesting to see who Martinsville gets for their new head-coach.
