  1. Why is the position going to be open? Is the current coach quitting?
  2. actually, I believe "55" was a current player who was killed over the summer; would have been a senior this year and made all-state last year.
  3. You have to use psychology to coach any team on any level. In high school, if a coach doesn't ever yell, he or she sends a message that what they are doing isn't important. I mean if a player makes a mistake in a game, and it has been drilled over and over in practice, and the coach isn't upset about it, then the player will get the message that its o.k. Coaches have to yell at times to send the message that this isn't a club, or study hall, or even a class. I'm not saying sports are more important than academics, just that they are different. Yelling is a way of saying, " lets get serious about this, or the other team is going to embarrass you in front of a stadium full of people", and yelling is also a way of weeding out those players that don't really care. Having said all of that, some coaches can and do take yelling (and cussing) too far, although I feel they are rare, and what is more common is parents and players using a little yelling as an excuse.
  4. Even if the coach made that comment, I took it that he was complimenting Richlands. By saying "if" they have a weakness implies that they don't have one, and "if" the defense is their weakness, its only because even a good defense looks like a weakness when compared to their offense. But, since I havn't seen them play, I'll leave it to everyone else to decide which is better, the offense or the defense. If its the offense, then quit crying about someone being either misquoted or trying to compliment your team.
  5. Was losing 20 players a good thing or a bad thing? Did they quit because they were yelled at?
  6. A story being posted on the lpd sports forum says the coach took his starters out after the outcome was decided, and the starters took their pads and helmets off. The coach told them to put them back on and get up off the bench and stand with their teammates, and some of the players cursed the coach. If I was the coach, I would have been upset and yelled at them too. The story goes on to say that the parents of the players being yelled at went to the school board over it. I'm just repeating what was said. I have no direct knowledge of what happened, and couldn't pick their coach out of a line-up.
  7. Lee has plenty of candidates for the job. I remember one in particular years ago that knew everything about everything. When current Chicago Bears running back Thomas Jones was a senior at Powell Valley, on the first play of the game against Lee, Jones had a sixty yard run. One of our fans jumped to his feet and started yelling at our coach for allowing the sixty yard run, and then said to everyone in the stands: " I would have had someone waiting on him at the line of scrimmage and popped him if I was the coach". I thought, what a genius this fan was. Jones had rushed for something like a gozillian yards as a junior, and all any defense had to do to stop him was just have someone wait on him at the line of scrimmage and pop him.
  8. Lee High has named Bobby Sanders, former head coach at Coeburn and current assistant at Appalachia. He becomes the eighth new coach since the school opened in 1989.
  9. starnes, without a doubt. once he was calling a game where a certain scott county team was playing, and a foul was called on the offensive team away from the ball right as a shot went in the basket, and he came over to the scorers table and said, " that's two points for our team, and the other team will shoot one and one."
  10. Lastest article in today's paper has it passing but with Ervinton staying in the cumberland.
  11. The first year the vhsl went to six divisions, the schools were divided on a state wide level. That year, an 0-10 team made the playoffs, because there were only four teams in their region that were classified in their division. So, the vhsl started dividing the schools by region. Because of the current format, it will be harder and harder for schools in region IV and region D to win a state title, because the larger schools in this area are smaller than the larger schools in the other regions. This is due mostly to schools in the other parts of the state are getting bigger, and schools in this area are getting smaller.
  12. I don't see the point in constantly putting down the Highlands District football teams. You are insulting a group of high school kids. There are many sports that many Southwest District schools don't do nearly as well as the Highlands District Schools. There are other sports that the Southwest District can't compete with the Piedmont District in. The Southwest District is better than the Highlands in football. Whoooptie friggin doooo! Everybody knows it, so why keep insulting these kids. I challenge someone to tell me one sport other than football that the Southwest District is better at than both the Highlands and Piedmont.
  13. Well, I havn't seen a game in years, but keep up with things by reading the paper, talking to others, and reading the opinions of self-proclaimed experts on sites such as this one. Since you asked, "what does Lee have", I have to say that I don't really know because everything is relative to what the other schools have. But, I still think Lee will win the Highlands, based on the fact that they have a lot of returning players, decent size, some depth, and great balance.
  14. I don't see how it is trying to "slip one by us" when it won't take effect for a year and a half. As for Lee, at one point Lee was almost down to single A numbers, and I argued then that they should be allowed to play down, based on geography, SOLs, and the fact that the vhsl was discriminating against Lee due to other schools with less travel time and more of a discrepancy in numbers were allowed to play down in the past. HOWEVER, now that Lee's numbers are way above the single A threshold, it would be embarrassing for them to be classified as single A. The vhsl never ceases to amaze me. Still, forcing Lee into the Southwest would be an economic, logistic, and academic nightmare. This new proposal by the vhsl is mostly an attempt to even up the number of schools in c and d and III and IV.
  15. Lee should win it. Marion last and the other two fight for second. Just my opinion. Good luck to all.
  16. Oldschool, well, I have no stats to back this up, and I meant all sports not just boys, but off the top of my head I would say softball, volleyball, and girls basketball with my next best "guess" being boys and girls track.
  17. And another thing, I never said Lee was in a down cycle, and if I were using that as an excuse it would apply to the entire Highlands District, which is what this topic is about. The subject is whether or not Virginia High deserves to be in the playoffs. As a matter of fact, I didn't even mention Lee High in my post, and plainly stated that I wouldn't want to mention any schools or sports by name because I think high school students deserve better than to be put down. You of course had no problem insulting Lee High's students, and even put forth an incorrect analysis of the history of sports at Lee High to justify your attack. My only conclusion I can make from your ramblings is that because in your opinion, because I am from Lee High, and Lee High doesn't have good teams (again, in your opinion), I have no right to comment on whether or not Virginia High should go to the playoffs.
  18. redneck, you really shouldn't comment on things you know little about. You didn't even address my point, which was that there are many districts and many sports who never do well in the playoffs, but they still are allowed to advance to the playoffs. As to your saying Lee High never was good at anything I will bet you that I can name at least three sports that Lee High has had more success at than all of the Southwest District schools combined over the last five years. (measured by regional and state wins and titles).
  19. When is the vhsl going to do something about the weak southwest district teams going to the playoffs in some of the sports that "I" think they are not very good at? I could name some of those sports, but my question is asked "tongue in cheek" and mixed with sarcasm as I wouldn't want to offend any high school kids who can't help if their teams are in a down cycle right now.
  20. I don't know if this has been discussed much here before, and I realize everyone's opinion is just an opinion, but if Va. High wins and gets the automatic playoff spot, who will they knock out of the D3 playoffs and is that team better than Va. High? Also, if Lee wins, who stays home in D4 as a result, and is that team better than Lee?
  21. Do the district champs still automatically go to the playoffs? In the past, that has kept some teams with some good power point ratings out of the playoffs. This is off the subject, but does anyone know what, if anything, the vhsl decided this week at the fall meetings?
  22. I think Lee is cursed also, but it doesn't have anything to do with any other school. That last good season, 8-2, the Lee girls basketball team only won two games. Some of the football players had a class with some of the girls basketball players, and those football players should be ashamed of themselves for the brutal, mean, and cruel things that they said to those girls about how sorry the girl's team was and how great the football team was. Now, I'd like to point out that I have a sense of humor, and I can not only take a joke, but I usually know when someone is just joking. This went beyond joking, and the strange thing is that the Lee girls basketball team has made six straight trips to the regionals since then, and the football team hasn't had a winning season since. Actually, I don't believe in curses and think that a declining enrollment, instability in the coaching staff, and not having enough quality players is what hurts Lee, but if you want to believe in curses, my proposed curse makes as much sense as any.
  23. I feel the sports writer's pain. He just described ninety-eight percent of the games from the old cumberland district, before Jonesville, Pennington, Keokee, Flatwoods, and Dryden consolidated to form Lee High. And Lord help anyone who had to play a Scott County team when some of that Scott County "gang" called the game.
