  1. I agree UVA. This probably wouldn't work in SWVA. I live in Northwest Georgia. We did not miss any days last year for snow. The year before we missed 2 days. The 2 days we missed, Tazewell County would have been on regular schedule. I think we have missed less than 6 days in the 9 years I have been down here. I do miss the snow days and 2hr late schedule. And the trout fishing! I would like to try the all year schedule that some in the country do. Go 9 weeks and off 3 weeks .
  2. The county I teach/coach at in Georgia has gone to a 160 calendar instead of the 180 day. Because of the financial crunch, the county saved around $200,000 dollars in utility cost by not starting school until after Labor Day (the power company charges the school system for the entire school year based on usage for the month of August). Our school day starts at 7:30 am and goes to 3:10. 7 period day. We used to be on block schedule but to cut cost, we switched over to 7 period day. We start school the first week of September. Get 3 days off for Thanksgiving. Normal Christmas break. Federal Holidays. One week off in Feburary for Mid-winter break. One week off in April for Spring Break. Get out the last week of May. What happened to our test scores? They went UP!!! Some counties are experimenting with the 4 day week. They keep the normal 180 day calendar, but take Mondays off. They do add an hour to the school day.
  3. I agree totally. I've taught the SOL'S in Virginia and for the past nine years the GPS (Georgia Performance Standards). In Georgia, we have a graduation test (Georgia High School Graduation Test) that 11th graders take. They must pass the 4 core tests to graduate. This is being phased out over the next couple of years. We also take the EOCT (End of Course Test). Counts 15% of the final grade. Next is the Common Core Standards that all states are supposed to implement over the next few years. All states are supposed to teach the same standards. We will still have the EOCT, but it will count for 20% of the final grade. So, I am afraid standardize testing is here to stay.
  4. Richlands, up to about 1977, I believe used some red trim and red numbers on the jerseys. They also used white helmets with a red R on them. I think when Coach Heldreth was hire in 1978?, he switched over to navy and white uniforms and navy helmets.
  5. What he said. Driving is a privilege just like a student riding a school bus. A lot of progressives (Obama, Reid, Pelosi, Olbermann, Maddow, etc.) are saying that national healthcare is a right that all Americans should have. Only the Constitution grants you rights. To help get rid of all this debt (Obamacare, Stimulus), don't be surprised if they pass a national sales tax down the road. Good luck comrades.
  6. The largest crowd I can remember at Richlands was the Richlands/Gate City game around 1975 of so. Easily over 10,000. Both teams were 8-0. Gate City won 35-7. They went on to win the state title that year. Richlands went 8-2. Lost the final game 2-0 at Marion in the fog. It was so thick you couldn't see the chains on the sideline.
  7. I would add Randy Edsell from Uconn to your list. Runs a clean program. Gets the most out of his players. Competes and wins with less talent compared to other schools.
  8. Jim Hammond (my uncle) was the Head Coach from 1967-1978. Bill Perry? I was the Head Coach for the 1965 and 1966 seasons and then went to Emory I believe. Coach Hicks was prior to Coach Perry.
  9. I was not at the game but it sounds like a middle screen the way mnhokie describes it. A lineman can be down field if the ball is thrown behind the line of scrimmage.
  10. He should not be talking period. The "unwritten" rule is basically after you leave office, you go back to your home state and retire. Maybe hit the speech circuit to make money for your library. "Peanut" Carter was probably the first to break this "rule." Reagan and Bush I followed it. Clinton for the most part. Bush II has so far. The best thing for Cheney to do is go back to Wyoming and do some fly fishing. All he doing is giving ammunition to the left wing nuts like Olberman, Maddow, Move On, Daily Kos, etc.
  11. McEachern (AAAAAA) probably has the best facilities in the state. Would be a good job. Has been down the last few years. www.McEachernfootball.com
  12. Richlands does not get to keep gate money from the playoffs. The VHSL gets that money.
  13. I agree Big D. It is not a perfect system. It can be confusing. Three classifications with two divisions in each. Why don't they just adopt the systems that other states use. Florida and Alabama both have six classifications- A through AAAAAA. That would be so much easier. Georgia has AAAAA. Virginia really has AAAAAA classifications but they don't use that terminology

    turf

It's Field Turf Big D. Field Turf everything inside the track including a drainage system. If they could get this it would be great!!! They would be crazy to put sod down. It wouldn't last with all the traffic the field gets. Little League, Soccer, Band, P.E., etc.
  15. With in the next ten years the odds are that there will be no AA schools west of Pulaski County. Then the state's going to have a BIG decision to make about classifications.
