Transfers didn’t begin until the Johnsons in 2009. Prior to that, they were rare. I don’t recall any in my junior or senior years, which were Mance’s first two. I don’t know if any football transfers during the 3 straight title game appearances 2005-2007, although I believe Shane Wicks was from Honaker.
Wicks was from Honaker, but he came to Richlands well before high school. We graduated together and I think he came either our 7th or 8th grad year. I know we were in middle school when it happened, though.
Youth may be part of the problem, but coaching is the elephant in the room that some don't want to talk about. IMO and take it with a grain of salt because I'm just a fan, but the only fix I see is a complete overhaul from top down. Bring in someone from outside the SWD and let them build their staff with no ifluence from parents or political higher ups involved.
I'm not sure Galax has enough offense to get to 38 or even 28. They scored 34 against George Wythe but only because GW gave them 21 points in the first quarter off turnovers deep in their own territory. The only other game all season Galax has scored more than 21 points was against Auburn and I'm not sure that should count.
Well they’ve already got 21 in the first, so I think they’ll eclipse that 28 mark. 😂
Most high school bands are just now recovering from the Covid shutdown. Band was basically eliminated while everything was virtual. Social distancing after virtual ended and students went back to school meant that space for band students was severely limited, thus keeping bands from recovering until very recently.
Galax had 16 band members in 2021. They have 43 in 2023.
Edit to add: Band competitions have also become something of a nuisance. They are trying to cram too much into one day events. John Battle is having a band competition and assessment in the same day tomorrow. Assessment in the morning and competition in the afternoon. My daughters call-time for tomorrow morning is 6am. Assessment performance at 10:15am. Competition performance at 3:15pm. Awards at 9pm. We will be lucky to get home before midnight. An 18-hour day is ridiculous for anyone but this is what band is now. Let's save money on travel and force these kids to cram three days worth of stuff into as short a window of time as humanly possible. Couple that with a football game tonight, our weekend is shot all to hell.
My brother is a freshman at Richlands. So his schedule is:
Band room opens at 6:15am tomorrow morning. Practice at 6:45am. Leave for Battle at 8:15am. Assessment performance at 11:30am. Competition performance at 7pm. Awards at 9pm. Arrive back at RHS at midnight.
That's SO much on these kids. I can remember my senior year, we performed at 2 competitions in Charlottesville on the same day. That was a LONG trip. Left for Hooville at something like 4:30am and got back to RHS around 3am on Sunday morning.
I know I first came to this board in fall of 03 or 02 cant remember for certain, been a while.
When was the board first created?
You officially joined August 22nd, 2008.
GMan joined on November 12, 2003, so that's roughly when the board was started. I joined September 18, 2005. Wild to think I was a sophomore in high school back then.
Week 2! We had another tie! A three-way tie this time, and with all 3 coming in under the combined score, Suit Up wins by being the closest (only 2 points off)!
We had a 6-way tie for the win! Bulldogs52 wins the tiebreaker by being the cloest to the combined GotW scores added up. All six went over, but Bulldogs only went over by 2 total points!
