  1. This. Everyone is making a big deal about the managers making Strasburg hang it up for the season when hits the 160 IP mark. He only pitches once every 5 days. They are winning more than once every 5 days. The Nats have a pretty nasty rotation with or without him. The Braves have won 11 out of their last 15 and haven't even gained a half-game in the standings. Gonna be tough to crack anything but the WC.
  2. No. WVU performed a lot better in BCS bowl games than the ACC.
  3. No way they go undefeated in the SEC this season. They very well may win a national title in January but I think they're staring at a loss no matter what at some point. They go through the gauntlet of Bama, USCe, and Arky, all of which are Top 10 teams, plus your standard Auburn's and Florida's in the conference. FWIW, I'm taking Bama this season to win it all, but there are legitimately 3-4 teams in the SEC that have realistic shots at bringing home the national title.
  4. I'll probably get flamed here by at least one poster that likes to show up every now and then, but I'm gonna go ahead and say it... MY OPINION is that WVU will be nowhere near #5 in the nation. I believe they'll hang around the 15-20 ranking all season long. They do have great skill players coming back, but I think they are going to learn the hard way that they aren't in the Big East anymore. Yes, they put up 70 in a BCS bowl game, but it's also the same team that struggled to score 24 points against Cincinnati last season. Their offense is based solely on rhythm. If it gets rolling, ask Clemson how it feels. If it gets disrupted then it's much harder. Ask OK State how that went against Iowa State. Consistency will be their big issue this season. They will win a game or two that they probably shouldn't and will lose a game or two that they should've easily won. They're gonna learn fairly quickly that they have to bring it every week in a big boy conference. They can't slide through on this schedule like they did last year. I am excited to see how they fare this season and in the future. They deserved to get their shot in a real conference and now they got it.
  5. Those are pretty sweet. Going to miss the khaki pants though.
  6. The dogs? Neither the Dream Team nor this year's team can "call off the dogs" because they don't have the luxury of putting in the white kids at the end of the bench. Every player on both the 1992 team bench and this year's team bench would start for any national team not named Team USA. Like UVAO said, they still have to shoot the ball. They pulled back on the reigns as much as they could. They quit playing transition basketball and sat in a zone the entire 2nd half. It would've been sad and embarrassing and even disrespectful if the US treated Nigeria like a baby and pulled up from 3/4 court, ran the shot clock out on purpose, or anything else that constituted as a joking effort.
  7. I don't think Greinke is going to be a Brave either. I'd absolutely love it, but fat chance. Not only would we not spend the money to keep him, but the Brewers supposedly want both Teheran and Delgado, plus about 4 other promising prospects. Way too steep. FWIW, I've already mentally parted ways with Bourn after this season. This is his ATL Farewell Tour too, much like Chipper's. No way we will spend the money to keep him around after this season, IMO. Bourn is arguably the hottest CF in the league and will be one of the biggest FA's on the market this winter. Teams will be looking to sign him long-term at a minimum of $12-13 million per year or somewhere in that ballpark. I'd be shocked to see the Braves go past $10 mil. A lot of the money coming off the books this year from Chipper, Lowe, and a few others will probably go into a long-term contract with McCann and I think Freeman and Heyward are each probably looking at some type of raise this offseason too. Word is that Philly is going to be hot after Bourn this offseason. If that is true then they will definitely outbid Atlanta. They just oversigned Hamels today to keep him away from NY and Boston, which means both Pence and Victorino are probably all but gone next season. If they don't throw the money at Bourn in the offseason then New York, Boston, or a team like Anaheim will. I'd say there's a good chance that Victorino will be your starting CF in Atlanta next season.
  8. I'm actually glad. Dempster came he wasn't going to sign an extension in Atlanta. We would've let Delgado go for what would amount to a 3 month rental. Not worth it, IMO.
  9. Damn. A sad, sad day for Bluefield fans. Princeton might actually be worth a $hit in football now.
  10. Of all the people on this board, I figured Mr. UVAObserver, Esquire, wouldn't jump the gun and convict someone solely on initial charges in a police report and without due process. 'Hoos scared? ;)
  11. Lots of stuff goes on behind the scenes that never make it into the the media. That's all I'm going to say...
  12. Says the guy who has created no less than 20 accounts in his tenure here. You've slowed down on your posting these past couple of years but everyone can see your name lurking online just about everyday. You love this place. You're addicted. You can't and won't leave.
  13. Heard rumors that your ticket stub to last night will admit you free to a future Eric Church concert. Pick a concert, take your ticket, and you're good to go. Dunno how true that is but its a much more likely scenario instead of getting all these guys back in town for another go. If that's true, that cool I just hope there is something in place for Jake Owen too. A lot of people were excited to see him too last night.
  14. I still doubt they let you do it. The gates don't open until 4 and music doesn't start playing until 4:30. The big names aren't going to be on until around 7 if the schedule runs according to plan. By the time people really start rolling in there the heat shouldn't be unbearable.
  15. Seen him 5 times and he's one of the best out there I promise you. Saw him with Hank a few years ago and he really might have put on the best performance on the stage that night. Hank is King but Church is right there with him in my book. Absolute blast.
  16. I didn't know the exact statistics, so thanks for the link. I honestly assumed that those numbers would be higher. But then I got to thinking about them. If you put them into context of perhaps the average high school having around 1000 students then approximately 55-60 females could be pregnant and/or have birthed babies (assuming approximately half of teenage pregnancies are attributed to 18-19 high school graduates or its equivalent). Is my assumption about reading your statistics correct? That's still a pretty significant number if you confine those pregnancies into just one hometown high school, IMO. Of course, populations, demographics, etc. will either help or hinder that average, but just a ballpark example. Regardless, it is good to see a downward trend and that SWVA is on "smarter" side of those statistics. Whether or not the numbers are high, low, black, white, etc., I doubt that < 1% of those pregnancies are planned and these teenagers specifically want to be parents at that point in their lives. SafeĀ® sex can be taught and save a lot of kids from having to start parenthood at an inopportune time.
  17. FWIW, every girl from Tennessee I've ever encountered (about 3; possibly 5) has been HIGHLY "educated" when it came to naked wrestling. Let's pray that things don't change. For real though, Tennessee and every other state across the country all suffer extremely high percentages of teenage pregnancies. Throw in the millions of people who have ever been infected with STDs and it's a very real situation. Kids as young as 11 and 12 are having sex these days and abstinence classes obviously aren't stopping them. All you can do is unload a bunch of knowledge on them of how to do it safely and hope they wear a hat when they go to work.
  18. Agreed. I am a Lebron fan, not Miami fan. I would be a Bobcats or a Trailblazers "fan" if Lebron was playing for either. The NBA has never sparked me enough to set a certain team and pull for them. As a kid, I always followed players like Jordan and Bird. Once they retired no one else really grabbed my attention like they did until Lebron came along. I really do think that last night might have opened the flood gates for Lebron's career though honestly. He's got the monkey off his back, so to speak, and legitimately knows that he has exactly what it takes to do it again... and again... and again. This could be the beginning of something sort of like Chicago in the 90's, IMO. Role players will come and go (i.e. Battier, Miller, etc.) but there will always be other ones that are willing and able to step in and fill their void (i.e. rumors of free agents like Nash and/or Terry maybe coming to MIA in the offseason). It might be a fun ride for Heat "fans" (read: Lebron fans). EDIT: And I guess I should say, I really do think that OKC will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. They are young and dangerous. Nothing in the NBA comes easy and KD will have to learn take a few lumps to prove himself worthy too as his career goes along. They'll be back.
  19. Not one, not two, not three, not four... ringless jokes about Lebron anymore. Never again!
  20. Tommy John up next for Beachy. See you back and healthy in 2014.
  21. In honor of 149 years today. June 20, 1863.
