  3. Congrats to Cole, the other young men from Blfd. and ALL for being recognized and honored ===================================================================== Captain Cole By BRIAN WOODSON Bluefield Daily Telegraph December 18, 2008 11:38 pm — BLUEFIELD (AP) — One year after finishing 13-0 and winning the Class AA state championship, the Bluefield Beavers started 0-3 and looked like a team in need of a change. Wins were needed, and fast. A change was made. Suddenly, the Beavers began to resemble Air Coryell of San Diego Chargers fame. “We were moving the ball pretty good on offense,” said Bluefield senior quarterback Will Cole, the first team offensive captain of the all-Class AA football team. “A 30-yard pass, I guess they would rather have that than a 5-or-10 yard run, so we started throwing the ball a little more. “I think we started putting some more points up on offense.” A lot of points, and a lot of yards with a throw-first offense that didn’t resemble anything that the nine-time state champion Beavers had done in the past. “It was much different. We’ve never thrown like this before and it was fun to do it,” Bluefield head coach Fred Simon said. “I just felt like in every game that we were going to put some points on the board and we did. “It was a lot of fun to be part of and we really enjoyed it.” Cole made it possible. Blessed with a strong and accurate right arm, Cole completed 58.8 percent of his attempts (203-345) for 3,022 yards, 33 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions. He ran for 182 yards and seven more scores, and also served as kicker, punter, and safety until a high ankle sprain in a regular season win over Scott limited him to the offensive side of the ball. That injury didn’t slow him down much. Cole threw for 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns over the final five games, as the Beavers finished 7-5, losing to Wayne in a 41-35 shootout in the state quarterfinals. “Every game is important, but especially the last couple ones knowing that you have to win to get in the playoffs and then once we get in the playoffs, you lose and you go home,” Cole said. “It was real important so we put in the extra time and were real focused and just tried to do our best.” His best earned Cole offensive captain honors on the first team as chosen by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. Cole was the captain of the second team in 2007. “I think he is very deserving of the honor and worked hard to get it,” Simon said. “The offensive production we had and with his leadership and guts, he really deserves it.” Cole leads a first team loaded with talent, including 30 players from 15 different schools. He is joined by a pair of Beavers on each side of the ball. Bluefield junior Marcus Patterson, who earned first team honors as a defensive back last season, is an honoree as a receiver, catching 70 passes for 1,093 yards and 14 touchdowns. Junior linebacker Jake Lilly was chosen on the defense as a utility player for a second straight year. Lilly led the Beavers with 57 solo tackles and 131 assists. Joining Cole in the backfield is Damon Waters, one of four seniors from Grafton, which finished 13-1 and won the Class AA state championship with a 56-25 win over Magnolia. Waters, a second team defensive selection last year, ran for 1,673 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Bearcats. The other running backs include Point Pleasant sophomore Allan Wasonga, who ran for 1,945 yards and 23 touchdowns, and Poca junior Caleb Arthur, who tallied 1,810 yards and 17 scores. Patterson is joined at receiver by Oak Hill sophomore Deandre Leonard, who caught 38 passes for 690 yards and 12 scores. Three utility players were also chosen. Grafton’s Cameron Gallaher threw for 1,820 yards and 25 scores, and also ran for 1,002 yards and 20 touchdowns. R.J. Johnson caught 76 passes for 1,054 yards and nine touchdowns as a receiver for Philip Barbour. Weir senior Bryant Davidson ran for 1,787 yards and 21 touchdowns for the Red Riders. Four seniors lead the offensive line, including Tom Moss of Ravenswood, Travis Smith of Wyoming East, Tyler Hanna of Magnolia and Artie Chappell of Weir. They’re joined by Wayne junior Michael Davis. Wayne Dickey, a senior from Grafton, earned all-state recognition as a kicker for a third straight year, making 62 extra points and eight field goals. Grafton linebacker Asa Coplin is the captain of the first team defense, having been chosen as a utility player. Coplin led the Bobcats with 86 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks. He forced three fumbles, recovered three fumbles, blocked three kicks and picked off five passes — returning four for touchdowns. Coplin and Lilly are joined as utility players by Independence senior Jake Justice, who had 89 tackles. State runner-up Magnolia placed sophomore Traeh Keller on the first team at linebacker. A second team selection last year, Keller recorded 96 tackles and nine stops for loss. Joining Keller are repeat first teamers Dustin Shreve of Wayne, who had 97 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and three interceptions, and Ravenswood senior Jake Young. Keyser senior Taige Redman rounds out the linebacker selections. James Monroe senior Nick Kisiel leads the first team defensive line. He recorded 102 tackles, 12 fumble recoveries and 22 tackles for loss. He’s joined by Weir’s Derrick Rovira, a second team selection last year, who had 10 sacks, six forced fumbles and also had 22 tackles for loss. Point Pleasant’s Clay Krebs had 87 tackles and five sacks for the Black Knights, while Tyler Consolidated’s Cullen Grover was also chosen on the first-team line. The three-man secondary includes James Monroe senior Taylor Robertson, a first-team running back last season, who fought through an injury-filled campaign to record 40 tackles and seven interceptions, returning those for a combined 176 yards. Keyser’s Jeremy Green and Wayne’s Joey Ferguson were also selected. Ferguson, also a standout quarterback, had six tackles for loss and returned an interception and fumble for touchdowns. Magnolia senior Justin Fox was selected as the team’s punter. Fox, who threw for 1,682 yards and 18 touchdowns, also made 32 extra points and had a 31.2 yard-per-punt average. The offensive captain of the second team is Keyser’s senior quarterback Preston Hartman, while the defensive captain is Magnolia’s Stingray Bates. 4. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/stories/2008/12/18/alabama_virginia_tech_dome.html Tide will play Hokies in Ga. Dome next season From staff reports Thursday, December 18, 2008 Atlanta will be awash in maroon and crimson on Sept. 5. The crimson and cream of Alabama will play the maroon and orange of Virginia Tech in the second Chick-fil-A College Kickoff at the Georgia Dome, according to Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president. The game will be televised by ABC or ESPN. “We hope to have a white-out on one side of the dome and a crimson-out on the other,†Stokan joked. He said that Chick-fil-A is trying to create a BCS-type situation to kick off each college football season. “We think next year that both teams will be preseason top 10,†Stokan said. This will be the Crimson Tide’s second appearance in the Kickoff. Alabama landed on the front of Sports Illustrated after it stunned Clemson, 34-10, in last year’s inaugural game. The Tide used that win to eventually rise to No. 1, which it held onto until losing to Florida in the SEC championship game. Alabama, No. 4 in the BCS standings, will play Utah in the Sugar Bowl. No. 19 Virginia Tech defeated Boston College in the ACC Championship game, and will play Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl. Tickets will be split evenly between the two teams and the game and surrounding events will be managed by the Chick-fil-A Bowl. According to the Atlanta Sports Council, the 2008 Kickoff drew a sold-out crowd of 70,097 and was viewed in more than four million households. The pre-game fan activities were attended by more than 22,000 fans and the event created an economic impact of $29.1 million for Atlanta and Georgia including $1.2 million in direct tax revenues. Stokan said this year’s game will have an estimated impact of between $30-35 million. “Atlanta is the heartbeat of college football with the sold-out Kickoff game, the SEC championship, and the Chick-fil-A Bowl,†Stokan said.
  5. below excerpt from the following http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2008/12/18/atlanta_braves_john_schuerholz.html “Having been in this business for 40-some years, I’ve never seen anybody treated like that,†Schuerholz said. “The Atlanta Braves will no longer do business with that company — ever. I told [agent] Arn Tellem that we can’t trust them to be honest and forthright. I told him that in all my years, I’ve never seen any [agency] act in such a despicable manner.
  6. Some of the bloggers are saying that maybe the Braves were being used to get LA to "show more money." The story on the guy going to the Yanks was laughable and "out there." Supposedly, Burnett's wife, does not FLY (apparently, they live in MD or her family does...can't remember)....so it's only a 3 hr. drive to NY from MD. Thus she won't have to fly....this was according to Wren, the GM (as told in the AJC). He said if we could move ATL closer to MD he (Burnett) would probably have picked the Braves. Who can compete w/that "bottomless money pit" ?????
  7. I'm very disappointed but......it is what it is. Guess, we'll see what the next move the Braves will try and make.

  11. I wish you were wrong BBAlum....but I'm afraid that could be the case w/Escobar. Furcal still owns a home here in ATL and I think he really wants to come back home.

  17. I realize many of you may not be interested in the GA state finals (will be streamed on internet starting at the listed times).....but for those of you that still need a high school football fix here's some info. (Dates Dec. 12/13) http://www.gpb.org/football/watch Friday Class AA 5 p.m. - Buford vs. Calhoun Class AAAA 8 p.m. - Tucker vs. Marist Saturday Class A 2 p.m. - Wesleyan vs. Emanuel County Institute Class AAA 5 p.m. - Flowery Branch vs. Cairo Class AAAAA 8 p.m. - Peachtree Ridge vs. Camden County The following link has story of teams and list of players that are college prospects playing in these games. http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/main.asp?SectionID=7&SubSectionID=7&ArticleID=53692 The AA team .....Buford Wolves are just a "powerhouse". (located about 6 miles from where I live). Their JV team schedules AAAAA JV teams and BEATS them. "Just how dominant have the Wolves been? How does 124 wins against just six losses since 2000 sound? That's a winning percentage of .954 for those of you scoring at home." above is quote from one of the following .... Following links about the Buford team: http://www.fcpsports.com/football/buford_wolves/showBlank.php?link_id=3625&section_id=147 http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/main.asp?SectionID=7&SubSectionID=7&ArticleID=53835 Again, this is just posted for those that have a "desire to see see another game of HS football this year."
  18. That is not always the case. All states have mandatory age requirements prior to starting school....(ex. you must be 5 by Aug. 31 in GA). I have a relative that is in the K4 (age 4 class) b/c he didn't turn 5 until early Sept. thus he missed the requirement by a few days and is legally almost a full year older. I also know there are several other kids in his class with "fall/winter b-days" that would "slip" them into the older than expected class. I don't think ppl should randomly be saying kids are "hold backs" b/c their ages are older than the standard average for these grades. I'm sure there are a few "hold backs" but to just say if you're older automatically puts you in that class is ridiculous.

  22. GA has a pretty good set up for the state championship games. The finals are always broadcast on the Georgia Public Broadcasting TV station that is carried by the local cable companies. They have been doing this for a number of years (not sure how many). These games are also streamed on the net....in fact watched the state semi AAAAA last night Camden County against Newnan on the net (though I could have watched it on tv). When the finals are played at the GA Dome next week for A, AA, AAA, AAAA, AAAAA on Friday and Saturday these games will be on T.V. and streamed on the net at http://www.gpb.org/football/watch. (You can also see archived games) They also did a live blog on the net last night updating scores and key plays on the other state semi games going on around the state. It was great. Does VA have a public broadcasting station? If they did, maybe that could be a possibility.
  23. I was laughing when I read it. If anything in this "depressing economy" can make you laugh...I'm all for it. You were taking "jabs" at the majority of ones posting lately (including the Richlands group) and I don't think it was done w/malice. You and Deuce (?) (not sure of the correct monicker) have some "zinging" talent. BTW anything you want to know in the future just ask one of the Richlands' ppl...."we have all the answers" and if not we'll make it sound like we do...jk ppl.
  24. The bloggers were saying the heat was being put on him to fire most of his staff..... which he didn't want to do. Apparently, he felt it was the only avenue he had to retain his job and so he opted to resign....and IF that is true he was essentially forced out.
