Couldn't have said it better myself! Where would Union be without the Lee County kids and Gate City would be solid 1A if not for for the Tennessee kids! You wonder long term these numbers can hold out even for those two!
There are just no jobs for people to move to SWVA for and nothing for the kids to come back for to establish a family other than just "settling" for whatever is there, blind loyalty just hoping for something good to happen only goes so far! My little north Kingsport neighborhood is full of Southwest Virginia "refugees" Lee County, Wise County, Scott County, Washington County and even a family from Buchanan County who left because of the employment situation, the Virginia ends in Roanoke mentality of the state government and state income tax!
Years ago we moved from SWVA to the Richmond area and when ever there were news stories on the news there and they talked about SWVA they were talking about the Roanoke/Salem/Blacksburg area. And that was the typical thinking of people in the Richmond area.

Any updates on the progress at Tazewell's field?

Why is nothing ever posted about scores, games, or schedule/standings for Baseball or Softball/

When is this going to happen?

Thanks. Didn't know where to put it. But, I think kids will take more pride in their schools if they look nice. Having good athletic teams helps too. Plus, I thought it would be cool to have a thread for just random stuff that pops in our heads... I would love to see an upgrade to Tazewells stadium sometime too. I think nice facilities attract kids to play. The field house at THS is really nice, would like to see improvements to the stadium.
It would be nice if they would do the synthetic turf field. Seems like they always get left out. It has always felt like they were an after thought and Richlands and Graham would get what ever they wanted.

When is Tazewell going to get a synth turf field? They have always played second fiddle to Graham and Richlands.

We like creek ratz which is next door to dead dog. It has decent food but especially in the summer you can sit outside and they have live music.
We haven't gone to Dead Dog much, but I will always support them because of the way they treated their employees after the place burned. They
kept them on the payroll and some of the employees actually helped with the rebuild of the place.

I read on Facebook where a family was riding around on a golf cart in Cherry Grove and a car came by them and started egging them. They also had a 5 month old baby on board. When witnesses tried to chase the car down, they allegedly pulled an AR-15 on them. I'll stick to Surfside for now.
Speaking of Surfside, swing by Bubba's Fish Shack and try the blackened Mahi. You're welcome in advance.
We live in MB (Carolina Forest area). Saw that story on the news last night but there was no mention of the AR-15.

Oh but they didn't recruit when mance was there lol
He has competition down here for players. Myrtle Beach, Carolina Forest are the bigger schools in the county and
they get most of the better talent.

Just watched some highlights of Mooresville from last season... He has some cats down there for sure not that Richlands doesnt have good athletes for the area but it looks like he is able to run what ever he wants on both side of the ball and has the kids to do it. On top of the pay in North Carolina being a minimum of $10,000 more than any school in SWVA makes it hard to believe anyone would make the move back. Money talks and that why the area has lost 2 coached to NC the last 2 years.
I know in SC some of the HS coaches are making $60,000 + and they don't even have to teach a class.

Jay Gruden is looking for a Job.

If that is the case, then it sounds like a waste of money. If they are looking to spend nearly 10 million
on a sports complex then why not have room for Basebal and Football. It doesn't have to be a full
field. How big of a field do they use for the 7 on 7? They could have that in there then and not worry about weather.
-
I see that Tazewell is going to do a "feasibility" study for a sports complex in town.
I wonder what all will be in there. Hopefully there will be an indoor area for footbal practice area.

Has the Coppinger tournament finished and what were the results?

Consolidation has been talked about before way back in the late 60's and early 70's. At that time they were talking about combining Richlands and Tazewell.

I too believe that it is a combination of reasons. I think the biggest is the lack of jobs in the area other than coal mining. The need for manufacturing and other service related jobs contribute but you can't get those in the area because of the lack of access to the major transportation hubs (Highways, Railways and airports). There is also not a lot of tourist related jobs because of the lack of attractions and again the roads. The other reason falls on the access to tv, videos, and electronic games. Disappearing are the days when a bunch of kids get together at "Johnny's House" to play football or baseball and even basketball.
I too am one of those that left the area because of work and was gone for almost 30 yrs. I did return for a couple of years but there was nothing there and the crime and drug problems are bad. So with that you can't attract anything. Now I live out of state in an area where we can't build houses, apartments and schools fast enough because of the growth. The football programs (and baseball) programs have a lot of participation. And yes a bigger number of D1 and D2 level players (plus it seems that they grow bigger down here). They have a spring football practices and 7 on 7 games.
-
Why don't they break the state into 2 sections east/west, upper/lower state. They do this in SC. They end up with more schools involved then the 2 champs in each class play for the
state championship.
