In our little area you have 3 age groups in jr. league they all 3 run a different offense and defense and that changes every year because the Daddy's I mean coaches move up with their kids.  Then you get to the middle school and they are running a power I double tights or double wing and the high school is running an air raid spread. I firmly believe that the whole system from high school on down should be running the same o and d or something very close to it.  It also helps if you have a Head coach for more than a 4 year average.

I was on a middle school staff this past season and we made it very clear from the beginning, this isint little league anymore. We told the kids, if we coach you like a little league team then you will play like a little league team, if we coach you like a varsity team then you will play like a varsity team. We had a blast, the kids had a blast, and the kids responded. By the end of the season we were working on technique stuff that is varsity level, well above what anyone we faced was doing. A lot of that is the kids and their willingness to work hard/drive to be better but a lot of it was us as a staff pushing them to be better. Build them up, encourage them and push them.

At the same time I worked with kids that couldn't get in a proper 3 point stance, by the end of the year they were serviceable rotational DTs. That's not a huge win but its building depth for varsity and who knows what kind of players these kids will turn into.  We coached the hell out of the special teams players too, the linemen were putting someone from the opponents kickoff return team on their back almost every kickoff by the end of the season, we had 1 O/D starter on that front line but we sold those kids on being special teams starters and we pushed them to be great at it. That will pay off next year when theyre starters for us on O/D and in the future when the O/D starters for varsity don't have to play ST. They were a very valuable part of the TEAM. I focused on technique with the O/D guys, aggression and intensity with the ST guys(backups) and was able to get production from all of them.

A couple of questions... it was only a few years ago that Eastern Montgomery made it to the semis wasn't it?  They must've had one good season and then back to mediocrity I guess?

Also, in 2011, didn't Clintwood play Grayson County that year and get obliterated?  Did Galax play Grayson County that year also?

Also, Rebel_Yell... playing Pike Central is the equivalent of Parry McCluer playing a winless 3A Rockbridge County.  It's not going to raise any eyebrows.  Pikeville is the team in that town.

Having seen the film of Union vs Appomattox Union had 1 player that was the best at his position. Every other position probably goes to Appomattox. union isint a great team and doesn't deserve to be mentioned with the above teams, just using Union as a good comparison.

Appomattox is loaded and very fast at all positions. It will take a special team to beat them.

And theres no way they beat Dallas, although they could probably get by the Raiders, Oakland makes too many mistakes and has too many penalties

Hurley has to schedule games with people they can compete with on an average year...this year turned out to be above average.

IF they schedule Union, Richlands, Gate City...even Abingdon right now...they can't win those games on an average year...they just don't have the depth to compete with larger schools...Hurley is small for a Single A school by the numbers. If they scheduled these teams, yes its tougher competition, but they would also get the floor wiped by most of them...up until this latest group came through Grundy was beating them by 50+ in the "down" period they've been suffering through. It's just not realistic to expect by the numbers. If they do that sort of schedule and get pounded for 10 weeks a year, they would not have a lot of kids looking to come out and play in an already anemic pool of kids to pull from. Why would they? I mean hey come out and get beat by 50+ every week but we're playing the top schools around? Not going to put cleats on the feet so to speak.

These group of seniors were only 4-6 in their 9th grade years with multiple games missed by each due to injuries or sickness. Brady, Zack, Devan and Rocky didn't start and the other 4 didn't play that year. So....yeah it was hard to predict. As of right now, we have added Tazewell, Pike Central ky, Tug Valley WV, Eastern Montgomery, Rye Cove and we need one more. Elizabethan TN and Blacksburg called last week. You think we can hang with them? How about Tolsia WV? they called or how about Union? Union offered us the same deal as Thomas Walker playing both games at BSG. Just telling you our offers so you wont be in the dark when you make the calls to schedule games

How did the flag come in to this?

I kinda like how everyone comes after Hurley about the flag...it might be one of, if not the last places in the country it's still flying high...it's gone from South Carolina, which I never thought they would cave and remove it...but, they did...then there is little old Hurley sitting over there with people trying to force them to make it go away, and they just give 'em the middle finger and move on lol...you have to love that.

God bless them, hope they don't ever change.

As far as the game goes, it happens, that's life...sometimes someone else is going to better on any given day. Hurley still had a great season, nothing to be down about at all..I know they wanted to win State and thought they had a legit shot at it...but in the end 11-1 is still a great season.

Congrats and see you guys next year at Grundy.

I'm not sure how or why this conversation took a nosedive. Lance asked a simple question and it went from being positive to a hot mess. We all have bad apples in our fan bases that would rather argue than eat so don't lump whatever amount of Hurley posters that are members of this message board with two or three knuckleheads. Y'all have been on this message board long enough to know the difference between a legit fan and someone who is an idiot.

The Hurley community is very proud of this year's team as should Richlands, Graham, Union, GW, Galax etc communities should be proud of their football teams. Any parent of a football player knows the commitment that the kids make to be in the playoffs and be successful. The Rebels have have worked hard to be 11-0. They were 8-2 last year playing the same schedule and they rededicated this offseason to defeat two teams that they lost to last year. Trust me, I know how much work because my son is on the team and has worked harder than anytime in his life for the opportunity to get to the big game.

Someone said that Hurley people on this board think this is the best team in SWVA. I'm not sure when or if it was said but the coaches, the players and the parents involved in the program have never said anything of the such. The coaches tell the boys every day and I'm quoting Rick Flair...."to be the man....you got to beat the man". Galax is the defending champion and they are back in the same position as last year. Sorry GW fans, sorry Riverhead fans and all the others but until Galax is knocked off they are the best in 1A.

My last thing I want to cover is that someone said Hurley only had a good team every 10 to 15 years. I actually think this was a Hurley poster and that just shows how close they follow the program. Coach Tester, Coach Davis and Coach Quinley have consistently had Hurley playing competitive football in SWVA under their tenure. These three have only had 3 losing records since 2006....2006, 2007 and 2013. The 2010 team was one of my favorites because they broke the string of victories that Haysi held over Hurley and qualified for the playoffs. The 2008 team was a good team and they had a winning record after struggling for two years with a losing record. The 2014 team was a good team and broke the long string victories that Grundy held over Hurley. I could go on but I will shut up now. I just wanted to clear the air on some things and let y'all know the difference between a fan and fair weather fan. Good luck to everyone this week and Thank y'all for your time.

I didn't realize Hurley had that many non-losing seasons. I geniuenly mean no offense, but I always thought of Hurley as a pushover, I didn't realize you guys had been successful. Playoff victories will come, Rome wasn't built in a day (although I'm not sure Hurley will ever have this talented of a core again) and you have the bad luck of playing against dominant Galax, GW and Riverheads teams. Kinda like Appo in 2A. They were never a factor years back, and now they're e favorites to go back to back 15-0nseasons and a 30 game win streak. Last year's Richlands team likely wins a state title more often than not, just ran into a buzsaw (and still almost won). Sometimes, its just bad timing.

I'm really not trying to start anything by saying this but by that measure FC is the best team in 1A. They not only beat Galax they beat them soundly. For 4 Qs FC was in control. Now with that said I do agree with you to a point. Now yes some of us are spoiled by the amount of success our teams have year in and year out. And I think that is where alot of this divide comes from. By others standards this Hurley team is amazing but by other people's standards they are unproven. It's really not a knock on the team or the kids. We all know how hard they work they know they have that chip on there shoulders. To prove they are legit and as sad as it is they are going to have to win this week and next week convincingly to prove that. Best of luck to the kids of Hurley and even though I haven't seen you guys this year thank you for the time and effort you guys put in.
