Word circling around Battle is that if Reed gets the job, he won't have much to work with. A lot of the main players on the rosters said that they aren't going to play for him and either transfer or focus on other sports at the school. The boys have gotten sniff of this and held a players meeting after workouts and were not happy about this. A lot of them are friends with the boys on Abingdons team and have heard what kind of a coach he is.

You could have ended with your first sentence.

They have had some monsters up front the last few year (big in height and weight but didn’t look like they bought into the weight room that much) and the Scarborough kid was a beast 2 years ago but the mountain 7 has been brutal the last few years. It’s got to be hard to win when you don’t have the support like Union Ridgeview and Abingdon have.

Just curious, in what way is there a lack of support at JSB?

  3. Coach Stone is a great mentor and teacher. He will be missed on Battle Hill. I don't blame him one bit for his decision.

It is a bit frustrating for a program that has lacked consistency over the years. It's always been one step forward and two steps back since the beginning.

  4. It may be more difficult to build up Little League numbers to the glory day's levels. The reality is that a lot a young athletes and parents are deciding against playing football. It is sadly a growing trend. You add this to the declining population in SWVA and it doesn't look good for football. The early sports specialization is also a factor.

Has anyone heard anything new about the VHSL discussion limiting the year round practice for all sports?

Has anyone heard anything on Battles schedule?? I believe that I over heard back in the fall that Sullivan Central and East wanted to schedule games with them this year but that the AD did not want the change and that he doesn't like to venture out of his box.

After you play PH, Holston and VA High plus district opponents there is only room for one other game. That has been Lebanon the last few years. The Washington County VA and city of Bristol games have been automatic on Battle's schedule for years due to gate receipts. Not saying it's right but it is what it is.

  6. Officiating at the Arby's has always been atrocious. In the first half of games and especially in the early morning games there is a whistle nearly every trip down the court. You get the feeling that some officials think they are the star of the event. LET THEM PLAY! It's one of the many reasons I did not attend this year.

4? Holston had a losing record the previous 4 years and got bounced in the first round of the playoffs. Battle also bounced in the first round of the playoffs and finished with a losing record. Abingdon got blown out in their 3A playoff game 63-27. Might be time to set the bar a little higher.

You must consider the past inconsistencies at Battle and Holston. The thing is you have what you have to work with. There has been many 0-10 seasons over the years. Consistency and progress are big factors, but I digress.
