If anyone saw the F/A-18 Flyover at Lane Stadium Saturday, you might enjoy a little more detail on the crew. Stacy is a good friend of my wife. They graduated from VT together in 2000. They met as freshmen when my wife was trying out for The Marching Virginians and Stacy was trying out for the Highty-Tighties.
Stacy is only the 2nd female Squadron Commander in Navy history. In short, she's a bad-ass!

Rocky River and Butler had an ugly incident last basketball season.
My brother has been a police officer in Charlotte for 17 years. I've heard some crazy stories and seen some even crazier videos!

Helluva first post! With input like this, I don't believe your last sentence is accurate. The rest, spot on!
Welcome to the board.

Galax forced Grayson to defend the width of the field with all 11 guys. That Grayson front 7 played outstanding football for the first half but wore down chasing Galax from sideline to sideline all night. Grayson adjusted by spreading the defense out a bit more which resulted in Galax gashing Grayson down the middle of the field for huge gainers, both running and passing.
I see Richlands spreading the field and forcing Grayson to cover sideline to sideline like Galax did. Grayson will keep it close but run out of steam as the game progresses.

It should balance out better in Class 1 next year. Some Region A schools are coming over to Region B to balance the four regions. But it is plain stupid and nothing more than a money-grab by VHSL. Most teams in Virginia would have to play 15 official games plus a scrimmage and benefit game in order to win a state championship, totaling what would essentially be 17 games. The NCAA doesn't want student-athletes playing that many games. Why should the state high school association?

Most people in and around the "Twin Counties" (Grayson, Galax and Carroll) who follow high school sports know who I am based on my participation with this board. I have never attempted to hide my identity through clever screen names. My user ID is a childhood nickname and the same user ID for my social media accounts as well. Most coaches at Galax have spoken to me about certain things posted in the past but it has always been light-hearted. They mostly appreciate the support. With that said, I have had a few members of the Galax school board attempt to argue over my points of view based on what they read here. It's been a real pleasure arguing with them on occasion. A couple of them are so incredibly full of themselves, it's quite nice to see them uncomfortable while struggling to counter. I have to admit, though, my favorite member to argue with moved to Georgia this past summer. He's a real tool! I'm going to miss pissing him off!
I haven't had a parent or kid ever mention anything to me before. Then again, I rarely mention kids by name on a public message board. After all, they are kids.
As @Bearcat Dad suggests in his post, I am appreciative of the how much of themselves these coaches give to the kids in our communities. I can attest to the fact that the Galax coaching staff (pick a sport) are always the first in the building and the last to leave. And in today's competitive culture, it's not just an "in-season" commitment, it's a 12-month commitment!

Most of us wouldn't care if it's SWVA related. The human element of the story has tremendous value.
Good for those kids!

Specialization may be beneficial to some just like playing a variety of sports is beneficial to others. Had McClung played other sports at Gate City, he likely wouldn't have gotten the notoriety and attention from major college programs because he wouldn't have been on the AAU circuit nearly as often. But he would still have been a tremendous basketball talent.
Chris Shreve played 4 sports at Grayson before becoming a football star at Virginia Tech and landing on the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers.
Wes Self played 3 sports at Grayson before setting virtually every pitching record at Davidson University. He was a two-time state player of the year in baseball as well as a first team all-state basketball player. At one time, he was Grayson's all time leading scorer, rebounder and career leader in 3-pointers made. He had more than 40 D1 scholarship offers for baseball and more than a dozen for basketball if memory serves. His name still litters the Davidson University baseball record book.
Jimmy Gobble played at least 2 sports at John Battle before being drafted by the Kansas City Royals. My brother played basketball and baseball against Gobble for two years.
Josh Shoemaker played at least 2 sports in high school. My brother played basketball and football against him for two years. He replaced Tim Duncan as the starting center for Wake Forest as a freshman.
Steven Peoples played 3 sports in high school before becoming the starting FB at Virginia Tech as a freshman.
Caleb Spurlin played 4 sports in high school before becoming the starting NT for Appalachian State. He was a 3 time state champion wrestler and could have gone almost anywhere he chose to wrestle. He was also a 1st team all-state baseball player and had opportunities to play D1 baseball.
For every kid who specializes, I can offer another who played multiple sports with great success!

Possibly, but I witnessed Galax beat Glenvar in every facet of the game with the exception of the scoreboard. Anyone who saw that game would verify. And for the record, I did say "may" be the best team Grayson has played all season.
But, if if's and buts were candy and nuts..........
-
Grayson's strength with this core group of kids has been their ability to grind away games and play disciplined, fundamentally sound defense. I'm not sure why anyone is surprised at this point. They are well coached and do what they do as well as anyone. It's not flashy but it wins games.
But I do agree, this Friday may be the best team they have played all season.
