  1. If I were a supporter of Gate City basketball, I would be thrilled the rest of Virginia believes last season was a one man show!

  3. This site never ceases to deliver the goods. Every time I seem to be having one of those days in the office, I can swing by here and instantly feel better about my lot in life!
  4. The Astros, Cubs and Red Sox have the best collection of young talent in all of baseball. Pitching will be the key for all of them.
  5. "You're" loaded until Chris Sale and David Price begin to fade. The best pitchers in MLB history begin to fade in a big way between 1,500 and 2,000 innings. Sale is at 1,482 and Price is at 1,922. Baseball isn't like any other sport in terms of sustained success with one group. The late 90's to early 00's Yankees were a remarkable exception. It just doesn't happen in baseball like it does for Alabama or New England football, or Golden State basketball. Enjoy it while it lasts because it rarely does in baseball beyond a couple of seasons.

  7. That's the most ridiculously competitive area I've ever seen in person. And I saw Drew Brees, Tommy Banks and Bradie James play in high school while in the military. One 8-team conference sent 6 teams to the playoffs with 3 of those teams reaching the state semifinals last season!
  8. For anyone interested, Thad Wells' Mooresville team is 7-2 in an absolute juggernaut of a conference (see above for the ridiculousness). The two loses were 12-7 to Hough, where my brothers kids attend. Hough is 8-0 with eight players currently signed to play Division 1 football next season. The other loss was to Vance who is 7-1 with their only loss coming to powerhouse Mallard Creek. Hough plays Mallard Creek November 2nd and Vance November 9th. I have to decide whether to stay home for Galax/Grayson or travel to see Hough/Mallard Creek. The I-Mech 8 conference currently has 3 schools in the state top 9 and 6 schools in the state top 25.
  9. The best two players I have seen all season are without a doubt, Maxx Philpott from Glenvar and Zach Horton from Northside. Horton is only a sophomore at 6'-3" and 210 pounds! In a Roanoke Times article over the weekend, he was referred to as "the eventual biggest recruit in Northside High School history."
  10. I will PM you. I'm never comfortable dropping names on a message board. Full disclosure, I know who you are and have since your first post on this board!
  11. Again, just trying to be clear, I graduated from Grayson with the Cassell twins and I know Todd, although not well. Still talk to Brant fairly often even though he doesn't live here anymore. I don't recall either of the Cassell twins being "all-state" but they were very good. They very well could have been. I'll ask Brant next time I talk to him. I don't like using transitive properties, especially for high school football. Different teams match up in different ways. If Mark Dixon has taught us anything, it's that line size is irrelevant. Galax has been out-sized along the line of scrimmage for the better part of a decade, yet continually win at the point of contact. Size doesn't help you much if you don't have strength, stamina and proper technique. GW probably played Galax better than anyone since the Glenvar game in the trenches. But lets be honest, Dixon has struggled to find a cohesive unit along the line of scrimmage since Andrew Belcher tore up his knee. With a healthy Belcher, Galax is a much better football team! Grayson's defense will keep them in a lot of games they can win if the offense can score enough points.
  12. Grayson (and Mcpherson) play/coach to their strength year in and year out. Last year, it was a loaded receiving core as you suggest. This year, it's a big, physical OL. They overload the line of scrimmage and let the QB mostly run. Fort Chiswell took the Hollingsworth kid out of the game Friday night and still lost. He finished with 29 yards on 18 carries. Just saying, it isn't enough to just take away Hollingsworth. Teams still need to score points against a very solid Grayson defense that has allowed 53 points all season not including Glenvar. Even including the Glenvar game, Grayson has only allowed 89 points or 12 points per game. GW has struggled all season to move the football for large portions of games against lesser defenses than Grayson's. Which is why I say Grayson matches up well with GW. But as you say, if Grayson gets caught looking ahead to Galax, GW will beat them!
  13. Grayson matches up well with GW's strength's with the exception of the Wells kid. If Grayson can contain Wells, they will win the game. But I think it will be close and could go either way. For whatever it's worth, CalPreps has it 19-17 in favor of Grayson. Galax will be very motivated and hungry following the collapse last year in Independence. Galax will also be coming off back-to-back games (Auburn and Bland) where the regulars played half the game. Galax will be healthy, rested and the game will likely be decided pretty early in my opinion. But it is a rivalry game. Anything can happen.

  15. Two of the three largest payrolls in professional sports history in the World Series. MLB needs an overhaul!
  16. Northside beat LB 27-24 on September 21. Two evenly matched teams will be fun to watch if they meet a third time!
  17. That’s what everyone said in 2014 when Glenvar plodded their way to a state championship. Not saying you’re wrong. Just saying we’ve seen this from them before.

  19. Most recent VHSL ADM had LB at 1,028.
  20. Actually, Northside has victories over Pulaski, Lord Botetourt and Salem this season!
  21. Northside beat LB 27-24. The Northside team I saw at Galax a few weeks ago was incredible!
  22. Galax 21 GW 14 Final GW did not deserve to lose this game.
  23. Gage Cooke to Landon Dickson from 25 yards out. Galax 21 GW 14 GW has the ball 1st and 10 on the 50 with 37 seconds remaining.
