  1. I don't recall anyone suggesting otherwise!?!?! But in our "Little League Dad" society, kids are often compelled to specialize at far too young an age. Especially in larger, more populated areas of the country. Like my nephew, who loves baseball but grew to view it as a chore that had to be completed rather than a game he enjoyed playing.
  2. A former coworker of nearly a decade moved to Staunton in 2016 to take care of his mother after his father passed away. He has kept me up to speed on the state of athletics in the Shenandoah region. He says Lee isn’t the same caliber team they were last season. I trust his opinion. Gate City going away!
  3. I believe it was Glavine. He spoke about how he snuck onto the hockey rink as a profession baseball baseball player. He was also drafted into the NHL.
  4. I read a book a few years ago by Michael Jordan’s personal trainer during his playing career. He credited Jordan’s regular participation in several sports for his longevity. He believes playing multiple sports works different areas of the body while not overworking them. I don’t fault my brother. He never forced my nephew to play. But in Charlotte, it’s rare for a kid to not specialize.
  5. While I agree with what you guys are saying, there is a fine line. A 10 week little league season isn't sufficient in order to keep up with what everyone else is doing. Travel ball is also an amazing experience if under the proper guidance and leadership. But you can burn a kid out if you're not careful. My brother lives in the Charlotte area. His son is an avid baseball fan and loved to play. My nephew played, on average, 300 games per year from age 5 through this past summer. He is now 13 and isn't remotely interested in playing baseball anymore. It wasn't a lack of talent or ability. He was the starting catcher (just like his uncle was) and top of the order bat for a team that won close to 80% of the games they played from Virginia to Florida. Joe Gibbs grandson and Colin Cowherd's son were members of the team so, it was well organized, well funded, with the best coaching those guys could provide. My nephew just wanted something else out of life. To my brother's credit, he had a conversation with my nephew about falling behind if he doesn't continue and would likely never be able to catch back up. My brother let his son make the decision for himself. My nephew hasn't played since November.
  6. Honest assessment not influenced by fandome. I like it! I agree, if Gate City plays as a unit the way they did against Radford, Gate City wins a close game. If they do not, Graham will win going away as they did last week.
  7. PGA Tour player JB Holmes played on the varsity golf team at his high school in Kentucky from 3rd grade through graduation.
  8. Hayward has an option in his contract after this season. Either party can opt out of the final 3 years. The Cubs wouldn’t overspend to bring Arrieta back. The market sets up nicely for Harper to come to Wrigley. Don't underestimate the Under Armour connection either. UA is the apparel provider and stadium sponsor for the Cubs. Even have UA logos in the Ivy.
  9. Here kitty, kitty, kitty!!!!! Like I said several times, Radford struggles guarding length! But, hey, we’re all entitled to our opinions. Even if yours was wrong. Hope you come back!
  10. Harper will join Bryant, Epstein and company in the Windy City next season!
  11. I think the Cubbies have found a leadoff hitter. Ian Happ is 5-10 with 3 HR and 5 RBI from the leadoff spot in 4 spring training games. Took Madison Bumgarner deep to lead the game off the other day.
  12. Mooresville High School is just shy of having 2,000 students. No comparison indeed!
  13. Gate City has failed to score 70 only 3 times in 29 games and you're suggesting "high 50's". Wow! Lofty goals, I like that! I know I will be here even if Radford wins. Will you have to onions to come back if they don't?
  14. I should also point out, Grayson may have been 22-4 but they only played 9 games against competition above the 1A level. Of those 9 games, only three came this year! Fort Chiswell twice and Union in the playoffs. Grayson, hopefully, learned a valuable lesson. Playing weaker competition doesn't prepare you to beat Radford or Union come February.
  15. You don't know what you don't know! You're still stuck on size. A 6'-0" guard with a 6'-0" wingspan trying to defend a 6'-3" guard with a 6'-7" wingspan is a mismatch. Horton is not a center! Guard him with your center, he will blow past them. Guard him with your guards, he will play over them. Radford struggled the three times I saw them attempt to match up to that very scenario. Gate City has three of those players!
  16. Carroll was a 3 win team in a relatively weak district that played a ridiculously weak schedule. They lead Radford twice for 3 quarters. I get the whole "woulda, coulda, shoulda" argument but the point remains (and seemingly skipped right over your head) Radford struggled mightily, twice, against a 3 win team because they couldn't control the length of Adam Horton. Length and size are two distinctly different things on a basketball court!
  17. I have attended three Radford games this season. All three games they struggled to contain length. Wes Ayers from Grayson and twice against Adam Horton from Carroll. In all honesty, Carroll should have won both games against Radford. They led the vast majority of both games. I agree Radford will defend and keep the game close but I think they will struggle again with the length of McClung and Ervin. I'm not a fan of either program. This is just my honest, unbiased observation after seeing both teams play on several occasions.
  18. It was. Although the result should be considered an upset, it’s certainly no fluke. Rocky River star Jaden Springer has been playing the game at a ridiculous level all over the world as a member of USA Basketball. He is also high on Virgina Tech as a potential college home.
  19. A dunk is still worth 2 points. Doesn’t help much when you’re trailing by 15 late! Just saying!
  20. If Galax can limit turnovers and knock down shots, I think the PM game will be much closer than the experts think. Galax isn't deep but this group can flat out play.
  21. I found the article to be one of the more unbiased pieces from an outlet known for its liberal bias. I recently read two Pew Research Center articles. One cited US media bias as being among the worst in the world. I'm certainly not surprised. It seems factual accuracy has given way to shock and awe, regardless of political leaning. The other ranked US based media outlets in terms of biased reporting. I was surprised CNN was found to be the least biased media outlet in the US. I shouldn't be so surprised, though. The center has gotten so blurred in recent years, anything down the middle has a feel of bias depending on the readers political leanings. Rather interesting research from an organization known the world over for its unbiased, fair assessment of government.
  22. Galax girls are blistering Covington 28-0 after a quarter.
  23. Long time Galax basketball coach Verl Brown announced his retirement after Galax lost the Region 1C quarterfinal to Parry McClure. I didn't attend Galax schools so, I didn't have the pleasure of playing for him. My brother and I competed against him and always respected his leadership and dedication to his kids. And make no mistake, each and every kid that has came through the Galax school system over the past 35 years are his kids! He has devoted his life to making this community a better place for all of us. I can only hope he remains a fixture and enjoys his retirement! Thanks coach!
  24. Skipping class to post ridiculousness online isn't serving your best interests! Is your homeroom teacher sick today?
