GmanFan 21 Report Share Posted September 19, 2007 I believe it was in Vermont or New Hampshire. A rule was passed that a coach could be suspended for running up the score. Lo and behold, a team was ahead like 50-0, and scored again. The coached was suspended for the next game. It was reversed on appeal. blueinbama 259 Report Share Posted September 19, 2007 Hey guys...this is my first post on this board, so don't rip me to shreads...First off I need to state that I am a Richlands graduate way back in 1969, and I am proud of my high school and it's football team. I am also very proud of the entire SW District of Virgina, where some of the toughest and grittiest football players that have ever put on pads have hailed from. I am always proud whenever I hear of a SW Va. football player advancing into the college and pro ranks. That being said, I would like to address a previous post. I don't think calling for a fake punt in the closing minutes of the first half qualifies as running up the score. As a coach in that situation I believe you try to get as comfortable a margin as you are able to in the first half, then play your second and third stringers in the second half to get them some experience. Coach Mance might have believed that punting the ball to Tazewell at that point might have given them an opportunity to score before the half, giving Tazewell momentum going into the second half. Instead, he ran a fake punt, and I believe scored before the half making the score 35-0. Call me crazy, but I think any good coach worth his salt would have made the same call if he had the confidence in his team to pull it off. blueinbama 259 Report Share Posted September 19, 2007 Thanks for the welcome! I'm glad the smack talk problem has calmed down. That was a little disturbing to say the least. I believe everyone has a right to voice his or her opinion, but keep it civil. No need for name calling and disrespecting another school. After all, the kids that are playing this game are putting it all on the line for their school, and they all are to be commended for their courageous efforts. Â [/ QUOTE ] Believe me, I know about smack talk...I live in Alabama, and there are two schools down here that absolutely hate each other...I'm sure you've heard of the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers. This rivalry never ends...it goes on 12 months a year, so yes, I know about smack talk. I do realize there is going to be heated discussion whenever sports, especially football, is discussed, I just don't like the name calling and the personal attacks that have been voiced on this board lately...it's totally unnecessary. You can support your team without all that childish banter, that's all I'm saying. I intend to participate in discussion on here, but with class. Austin Fuller called it at the line because Tazewell only had 3 players lined up on the right side. I've heard from some players that the coaches were not happy that he called it after the game. Â [/ QUOTE ]it was opening kickoff, thats why they have a coin toss, why dont they just throw it up in the air and see who ends up with it? a tip off instead of a kickoff? i could understand if it were the second half kick and they were barely winning but this was opening kickoff... nothin u can say to justify that it was just fine.. very unsportsmanlike.. but that was the past this is now.. Â [/ QUOTE ] Â Winning the coin toss and electing to receive only guarantees you of lining up in the receiving formation not that you will get the ball first...you still have to cover the kick...no different than if they had kicked deep and your return man either fumbled it and the other team recovered or if the return man didn't even bother to pick up the ball after the kick and the other team recovered it (happened in a State Championship game with Bluefield several years back)...you got to play ball from the time the ball is put in play until the whistle blows...there are no "gimmees"...great coaching strategy if you ask me...no one was expecting it.... Just as GMan said, both teams line up and should be ready to play. Would it have made it better if the players of Richlands yelled out to Tazewell, "Hey, get ready, we're gonna do a onside kick".............
