BigBlueAlum 12 Report Share Posted April 5, 2008 [ QUOTE ] Great! Get the SCSB to chip in $40,000 to the TCSB and we got a deal. [/ QUOTE ] Or maybe we could get Richlands to chip in some of the profits from their 4.00 per slice pizza they sell at the games. [/ QUOTE ] Every where has over priced refreshments. Up unitl a year or two ago you could get a iced drink in a plastic reuseable Richlands cup for only a buck...I think they have gone to canned drinks now. Im sure if the pizza is $4.00 a slice then they probably dont sell alot of it. But I wouldnt know...I dont go to a football game looking for a good deal on a slice of pizza. BigBlueAlum 12 Report Share Posted April 5, 2008 [ QUOTE ] Well I have heard that Richlands will not bet getting the field turf, Emats can not get the loan to get the rest of the money to pay for it. Maybe they raised the price for the playoffs, who knows? I started posting on this thread because a Richlands fan was talking about moving all of the Graham games except Beaver away from Mitchell Stadium. That is just ridiculous. I`m sure if Richlands had a stadium as nice as Mitchell he wouldn`t be saying it would save the county money by Richlands not playing there. Sure a Richlands fan said something stupid but then a few other Richlands fans said it was a dumb idea. Of course no one from Richlands would want to go to Poccy to play their home football games, no team wants to go to another town to play their home games. old_school_blue 247 Report Share Posted April 5, 2008 My point is this. Marion is not in Tazewell County. Your post that the view is nice in Mitchell Stadium had no bearing on the roots of the conversation. The name of the thread is "Save Tazewell County more money." The Richlands fan that started the thread was being thrown under the bus in my opinion. He had a valid point, maybe not realistic, but valid nontheless. I stated it was in the best interests of the kids at Graham to play at Mitchell. But, the discussion (see the name of the thread) was whether or not the TCSB should shell out $35,000-$40,000 so a high school football team could play five (5) games in a very nice facility or play at PHS for free. When discussing this, keep in mind that all taxpayers are NOT football fans. And in retort to the individual that asked if I would rather see the TCSB shell out major money for Graham a field of their own. The answer is YES!! I think it is a shame that we have to pay to use a stadium (even though it is a very nice stadium) and have never made an action or a plan to provide the kids at Graham with their own stadium in their own state. And don't take that as a knock on West Virginia because that is not the intention. And if you don't like our pizza or hotdogs, stop at Taco Bell before entering the Ernie. P.S.-----If you win your games you will not have to travel to another stadium in which they overcharge for pizza. Must stop, getting a hand cramp...................... I guess I was guilty of throwing the original poster under the bus. While I think it is a horrible idea to make GHS play their games at PHS, I can see what the original poster was getting at. When the shoe is on the other foot people dont seem to want to go to any extremes to save a few bucks. As long as it dosnt involve thier school everyone is fine with cutting back to save some money. I would be happy if we donated our profits from our over charged pizza to the school board....as long as it would keep our fellow Tazewell countians in Marion happy...wait...I almost forgot, Marion isn't in Tazewell County. old_school_blue 247 Report Share Posted April 5, 2008 Your opinion is welcome.....just open to scrutiny, as is all of ours. I may seem a bit sarcastic at times. But, it is meant with a great deal of humor. This forum is a melting pot of people from SWVA and Southern WV. That is why this forum is great. Everyone has an opinion. Back to the subject, Big Blue Alum hit the nail on the head when he posted about people wanting to go to extremes to save a buck......AS LONG AS IT DOESN"T EFFECT THEIR SCHOOL OR TEAM. It seemed to me alot of people jumped on the "Close Pocahontas" band wagon. If I lived in Pocahontas, I would have fought just as fervantly as they have. In the end, you can't justify keeping a school that has less than 200 kids in grades 6-12 open. I think, however, if they were promised 2010 or how ever long the TCSB should keep their word. I think what they said is it could be open until 2010...obviously they changed their minds and don't want to keep wasting money to keep the school open for 100 kids. CPF 417 Report Share Posted April 9, 2008 [ QUOTE ] I dont understand . What is the up keep of the new turff. You dont mow it stripe it or water it. so why all the money for up keep? [/ QUOTE ] There is no upkeep at all. But it supposedly only lasts for 15 years. At Mitchell Stadium, the city of Bluefield is supposedly taking all money recieved from the TCSB for Graham's rent and putting it into a seperate account for the sole purpose of replacing the current turf in 15 years. It is estimated that the turf will cost 350,000 dollars.
Popeye 32 Report Share Posted April 9, 2008 If you have ever been on that type of field you would be covered up in little black pellets. This rubber has to be "Seeded" from time to time. Other than that upkeep is minimal.
the_general 13 Report Share Posted April 9, 2008 How long has Graham used Mitchell? I played in the early 80's and we played at Mitchell then. Say they started using Mitchell in 1980.....assuming the rent was ~$20,000 for 10 years and increased to ~$30,000 during the 90's and once again increased to ~$40,000 at year 2000......grand total.......$~780,000.00 that's a handsome ransom.
