BigO 316 Report Share Posted December 19, 2012 Can someone "in the know" please tell me if VHSL rules prevent a high school AD from also being a head coach for any sport at that school? Just doing some research. Thanks!
GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted December 19, 2012 Nope. Coach Carlock was AD at Graham for many, many years while being the head football coach. Glynn, Jr. is both AD and head boys basketball coach now.
futbolking 766 Report Share Posted December 19, 2012 At a lot of the schools in our region, the AD is also a coach. Very common practice.
BigO 316 Author Report Share Posted December 19, 2012 Thanks guys....was afraid it was allowed. I had heard from people NOT "in the know" that it wasn't allowed. Thanks for your help.

I think every AD Battle has ever had has been a head coach of some sport. I can't even think of an AD around that doesn't coach in SWVA. Personally, I don't like it. What happens when someone has a problem (serious problem, not "Johnny doesn't get enough playing time" problem) with a head coach who's also the AD? The AD would usually be the one you'd go to and the Principal is usually to busy too deal with every problem (which is why there's an AD to handle sports issues). To knowledge, Richlands AD Rick Vencill is not a coach. Or at least he wasn't when I was there.

Tom Rife was the head basketball coach his entire time of being AD. Greg Rowe at Grundy was the head football coach while being the AD, so yeah, it is a pretty standard practice. Could be mistaken, but I thought Ricky was the wrestling coach when he was first tapped as AD.

Rick Vencill is and has been the boys and girls cross country coach. Hard to believe maybe but it is so.

VHSLhelper 571 Report Share Posted December 29, 2012 Some county Supers around the state have decreed that AD's can't be a coach. Since the rules changed a while back allowing year-round practice, now, most FB/BB coaches don't have time to be AD.
coacher 10 Report Share Posted January 2, 2013 Did he used to coach Softball at Patrick County? NOpe, that was Ricky Vernon.
