HM3-8404 103 Report Share Posted August 29, 2015 I hope all of you guys have a safe trip home tonight. GC will play more than 10 games this year and I wouldn't want to play them late in the season. The Richlands team you played tonight is in the top 5 teams we've ever had IMHO. Good luck the rest of the season.
trublue 939 Report Share Posted March 31, 2016 Didn't want to start a new thread...so found this existing one...breaking news from Georgia for one of your own...Jeff Herron...GC alum.Saw this on my phone this afternoon and was shocked, however ...this is a Slam Dunk for the Grayson High School football program in Gwinnett County. Jeff Herron (former Gate City alum and E&H football player) has been named the Head Coach at Grayson HS after Mickey Conn, the coach who established the program was offered a coaching job at Clemson by Dabo. (Backstory...Dabo and Conn were room mates in college at AL and both were on the football team. Wayne Gallman, RB, for Clemson played at Grayson, backup QB for Clemson played at Grayson and Chase Brice, an upcoming senior this year at Grayson HS, Coach Conn's nephew, rated a 4 star QB, has committed to Clemson). http://www.gwinnettprepsports.com/schools/grayson/gwinnett-trio-shines-at-atlanta-nike-the-opening-regional/article_16aa82a7-cbb5-5e86-82ae-964c62264bfa.html In the above article, Owen Pappoe, a true freshman last year at Grayson...had multiple D1 offers before playing his first varsity football game. http://www.gwinnettprepsports.com/schools/grayson/grayson-freshman-owen-pappoe-backing-up-college-offers-on-the/article_b6242e22-ffe7-5817-9c5a-1dc12f04df12.html Grayson was expected to vie for the state championship in the new classification this year established by the GHSA...AAAAAAA (7A). Grayson has a ton of talent returning and also a 5 star from Peachtree Ridge HS (Gwinnett) transferring to the program. I read on the GA Sports Board... on the first day of the job opening when Coach Conn announced he would be leaving...there were over 100 applications received on the first day. Coach Herron did NOT apply for the Grayson job ...he was approached by a Grayson committee to see if he would be interested ... this story has created a seismic boom in the GA high school football world today. (Moreso, than the Oscar Smith from VA coach taking a job at Marietta HS, IMO) Updated: Grayson football hires Herron to replace ConnMarch 31, 2016 | Filed in: Football, Gwinnett County, Latest News.http://highschoolsports.blog.ajc.com/2016/03/31/grayson-hires-prince-avenues-herron-to-replace-conn/
1inStripes 932 Report Share Posted March 31, 2016 I wouldnt have expected Herron to leave his private school job. He would lose his retirement draw from the public school system if he went to Gwinnett. Its another reason why I doubt Colobro ever comes back to a VA school as a teacher and HC. tbgfan 855 Report Share Posted March 31, 2016 I think this is a great hire for Grayson. Had close relatives who graduated from there and have attended football games there as well. It is a top notch facility. The Booster Club's support probably ranks up there with some college programs, so I'm sure Coach Herron will be well taken care of. Congrats to Coach Herron as he leads the Rams!!!!
trublue 939 Report Share Posted March 31, 2016 Following is an article I've had bookmarked of successful (winning) HS coaches in GA making over $100,000 a year ...Herron is a legendary coach in this state...and I can see him being paid very well . This article doesn't include the recently hired FB coach from Oscar Smith in VA...who was hired at a starting salary of $111,000, I believe.... http://www.wtsp.com/news/many-georgia-hs-football-coaches-making-100k-plus/61610172
1inStripes 932 Report Share Posted March 31, 2016 His reputation is great no doubt about it. Was interesting to see what he said about changing from the Wing-T due to the QB they have. I went to a QB camp in GA while in HS and he was one of the coaches there for the camp and was the HC at McEachern I think but I may be mistaken. His dad and mine had worked together at one time. trublue 939 Report Share Posted April 1, 2016 Herron was not a head coach at McEachern...he could have been an assistant coach...however, I could not find a record of it, if so. He more than likely was an outside FB coach assisting with the camp. The present HC at McEachern is Hockman....prior to Hockman, Jimmy Dorsey was the long time HC at McEachern from 1984 until 2007 with a record of 236-79-1. Dorsey is now the AD at McHS. 1inStripes 932 Report Share Posted April 1, 2016 He was an outside assistant to the camp as it was run by someone else, that I cant remember who. The camp took place at West Geogia State. There were coaches from all over the south and midatlantic. Looking at one artcile it appears he may have been at Wheeler at the time. I was thinking he had a McEachern hat or something but it may have been another coach.
trublue 939 Report Share Posted April 1, 2016 Herron was the HC at Wheeler in 1995 and 1996. In his 26 seasons as a HC...his record is 273-51-0.
RiverRat24 274 Report Share Posted April 1, 2016 Congrats to Herron! The man has a heck of a record and will do well at Grayson. Ryan4VT
SXSW 557 Report Share Posted April 5, 2016 I just heard a partial list of names of some of the coaches that have applied for the GC job. Turner from Union has applied, as has Norris from Sullivan North, Mike Castle has applied. My source says that applications are nearing 30 and getting good candidates. Coaches from KY,FL, MS, TN, NC as well as Virginia. The decision want be made until Mid May. Was also told that Jeremy Houseright tried to apply and was turned down because of no head coaching experience which is being required by the search committee. cityofRaven 2,444 Report Share Posted April 5, 2016 Yep Turner applied don't what is so hard to believe. I was told that the committee wanted to hire him on the spot. The fact that he arguably has a program that is just as good if not better at the moment and is in the area in which he grew up is why it is so hard to believe for me. RiverRat24 274 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 Heard they was passing out applications within Lee Federal Prison. Next man in might be a member of the Mexican Mafia.
GC_Quincy 582 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 I've expected it to be Robbie Norris from the start. If a man wants a job as bad as it appears he wants this one, then he'll be successful.
SXSW 557 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 There are two coaches one from Florida and one from Mississippi that have pretty impressive resumes that the committee likes, and Norris is already making calls trying to get a staff together if he gets the job. GC_Quincy 582 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 The one from Florida is in his 60's. Haven't heard about one from Mississippi.
trumpet1988 289 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 Yep Turner applied don't what is so hard to believe. I was told that the committee wanted to hire him on the spot. I doubt that he even applied. Everyone in BSG had a feeling that when he got on the coaching staff at Powell Valley that he would likely be Robbins' replacement and possibly coach Union. It may be reasonable to think he was a shoo-in for Powell Valley or Union. I don't know if that's exactly the case but it's reasonable. Now he has a successful program at Union. Unless he was forced out, which I don't see happening, why would he want to leave? I don't really know whether or not Turner applied for Gate City but I will say that given what he has at Union, it doesn't make sense that he would apply at Gate City. SXSW 557 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 Whether Turner applied for the job or not, (my source still said he did) the problem facing S.W Va. schools is that the area is dying, there are no jobs and no families moving here and if someone can get out and better themselves you must do that professionally. Right now Union has a lot of talent but Big Stone is dying just like Lee Co. and the rest of our end of the state. I wonder how long Wise, Lee and Dickenson Co. can keep afloat. It is depressing to drive up 23 and see the mine silent, the heavy equipment places silent and all the support systems for mining shutting down. When the mines shut down so does Caterpillar and Halliburton and Austin Powder and the engineering firms and the coal dealers and then the car lots and restaurants. Gate City may be down a little but it is kind of insulated from the mines because of Kingsport so it will be back, and Union's talent can't last forever. They should have went to State last season.
