A lot of people are now catching on to what has been going on at RV for past couple of months.  I’ve not responded as everyone else is doing a dang good job of venting.  As I stated previously, I’m pretty close to the Beavers family, the uncle more than the dad but still know him well. I spent part of the weekend with both of them this weekend.  Beavers’ dad is just kinda numb to it now.  He’s got all the stats and shit memorized and he’s kinda guy that likes to look at the numbers.  Kid touches the ball about 4 times a game and scores on about 40% of those touches.  They have no idea why coaches won’t involve him more.  Coaches don’t communicate with parents at all. (Maybe that’s good or bad). Kid is pretty chill about it though.  He said “J, it is what it is. I try to stay ready when they need me.”  For better or worse, he isn’t the kid to demand the ball or push to get more touches.
I won’t go into details but there’s a lot of frustration built up with a lot of people in and around the program.  The dad used to post on here quite a bit but he’s stopped now.  Said it’s all too damn frustrating and he’s gonna do more fishing.  Lol.

I know some players and most coaches, but not Beavers. Big credit to him for having his head in the right place.

At what age should kids start lifting?

What I had done in the past with other peoples kids was 6th to 7th grade start teaching lifts and strengthening shoulder girdles and core so they can handle weight when they get older. 8th grade is usually good for harder lifting. Technique and explosion are more important than weight. The weight will come. People will say you're going to stunt their growth, but my own kids started lifting earlier than that and they are both 6'1" and at 6'2" I'm the tallest person in my family. We generally run 5'9" to 5'11" on both sides of the family.

  3. Strength and Conditioning programs make more difference than pretty much anything besides god given talent. You can't make a grade D athlete an A plus, but you can make them a C to a B minus maybe. Get a whole team doing it and you're going to be a different team. I could give a ton of examples, but I don't want to start preaching.  I'm glad I got back on here today and found a thread on my favorite topic. lol

  4. I'm figuring he's gonna draw his Va retirement and still work. Can't blame him for that, plus he's moving to bourbon country. Pulled the name of the place up on Google just to see where it was and three distilleries popped up. I always thought he was a good guy, hope he succeeds.

  5. March Madness is awesome. I stopped watching NASCAR years ago. I wouldn't watch a baseball game if they were playing it in my front yard. I'm pretty busy with multiple jobs and don't get to watch much TV though, so it hasn't bothered me much. Football is a different story. I live for it. Don't know what I will do if that gets cancelled.

  6. Step 1 for Buchanan Schools - Pass a resolution to never hire Haydee Robinson. Step 2, Look at everything Dickenson County did with how they handled their money and do the EXACT opposite. You will probably be O.K. On a serious note, Council Doesn't field a team and Twin Valley is historically not very strong. Hurley despises Grundy, I doubt most football players will go there. Which means Grundy basically stands alone vs 3A competition and gets absolutely destroyed anytime they play at that level. I hope not, but that's the way I see it shaking out for a few years anyway.

    Per local source:

The Ridgeview Robotics Team (state and national qualifier) is developing an app to allow all Ridgeview fans to vote on 3 plays before each snap and then a coach will signal in the winning play call. Also going to do the same with defense. No head coach needed anymore. Just signal callers.

It will be like real life Madden. Was also told that on Sundays coaching fans would get to pick which Madden play book to use during the week.

I’m too old for madden. Can we do Tecmobowl?

All those kids are back next season so it could still happen......One thing I will say is that Coach Mullins is without a doubt turning over a team that is set up to be a Region D contender

IMHO the bigger issue for next season is retooling the Defense that is losing several key players and was far from solid vs the pass

I was shocked by how bad we were at times against the pass this year. Nowhere to go but up.

  9. There needs to be a one question test for all candidates.

    1. How many offensive plays are possible on any given down?
    a) There are only 6 possible offensive plays.
    b) There are more than 6 possible offensive plays.

Anyone that answers b can be interviewed.

As much as Ridgeview has driven me crazy Coach Mullins is a fine man and I wish him the best. It will be a big load off of him and I’m sure he will be happier.

So.....should a kid like that being at rye cove should have transferred to a bigger school?

    thoughts?

The experience of putting on your hometown colors on Friday Night is worth more than anything else can replace. Years ago you might have needed to go somewhere to get noticed, but now almost any kid with a phone can send highlight videos to any coach.

  11.

    1. Toughest Place To Play in SWVA? -  I pick Union over Hurley only because of the size of the crowds.

    2. Best Concession Stand in SWVA? - Rye Cove with Honaker a close 2nd.

    3. Best Helmet in SWVA? (share a pic if possible) - I don't pay much attention to that kind of thing, but I love that Rural Retreat helmet shown earlier in the thread.

    4. Best Uniforms in SWVA? (share a pic if possible) - See above answer.

    5. Biggest Coaching Staff in SWVA? - Physical size -  Ridgeview has 3 assistants that are 6' 3" or taller and over 3 bills. They would be hard to top.

    6. 1D Coaching Staff of The Year?  - Would have to go with Burton. Huge mess in the offseason, but have done well.

    7. 2D Coaching Staff of The Year? - Central, with Gate City 2nd

    8. Dark Horse Team Of The Year? (surprised everyone) - Central.

    9. Best Game of The Season? ?

    10. Biggest Upset of 2019? Central over Ridgeview.

It all starts with the coaching staff they had good players other then Adkins just didn’t want to call anything but run. They will never be able to win in big games...  just frustrating to watch

I’m not gonna get off on a rant, but I will say there’s a joke with my kids and some of our friends that certain members of the RV staff gets together after games and say. “We lost, but we lost our way. YEA!!!” With a big high 5. It wasn’t as bad as the way they wasted the Sexton kid last year, but there is a lot of speed on this team that never got used. Other options would only make Adkins more dangerous.

  13. This one will be good. RV can’t defend the pass. Keep Adkins from taking over and sling a few and I could see Wise winning. Mullins has been upset in early rounds 4 out of the last 6 years going back to the Clintwood days. However, Saying You’re gonna contain Adkins and doing it are two different things. Good game, but Ridgeview moves on.

  14. I know I’ve said this before, but the Abingdon O-Line laid an old  testament level beating on the RV front 7 last year and they still almost found a way to win. I can’t wait to see this one. Abingdon scouted us last year to the point that the DB’s were telling my son what route he was about to run before plays. Hard to beat a good, physical team when you only run 4 plays. The one page playbook loses this one for the Pack unless they get a little creative. I’m gonna bring my cowbell out of the closet and raise a little Cain on the ridge Friday.
