I'm not sure but Bluefield's hands are somewhat tied. There technically is not a home or away team in WV. The higher seed gets to choose where the game is placed as long as it is a field playoff certified. Mitchell Stadium is certified for all classes. The lower seed gets to choose the time of the game and they get three choices. Friday at 7:30, Saturday at 1:30, or Saturday at 7:30. I think what has happened is Graham's game will be scheduled by the VHSL and they will work around the time that Bluefield HAS to play. A few years ago Bluefield College moved their home game to accommodate Bluefield so that Bluefield would not have to play in Princeton.

I don't even consider Richlands down. Just not elite.

Pikeville is a pretty good football team. Like Richlands, they have lost to some pretty good teams.

55-0 Bluefield at the half. 2nd team in the game before halftime. Mookie Collier with 4 TD's is now the all-time scoring leader for BHS football.

If you want to see the game you have to set on the Richlands side.

After Magna Vista lost in the playoffs they "discovered" ineligible players. Had to forfeit every game that they won including playoff wins.

2003 vs. Magna Vista is correct. After receiving a forfeit for the playoff game vs. Magna Vista the year before. Technically Richlands did not lose a playoff game in 2002 but did not win a championship either.

Yesterday the Library of Virginia posted some older Smyth County yearbooks from Marion, Chilhowie and Saltville. I was able to find two scores of games from 1944 from the 1945 Marion yearbook that I did not know about. Games vs Saltville and Narrows. My reason for this topic is to encourage anyone that may have had family go to school in 1950 and earlier to think about the possibility of yearbooks being in the family that may have old football scores in them. Schools that I am still looking for early scores are; Marion, Saltville, Rich Valley, Chilhowie, George Wythe (Wytheville High in the early days), William King of Abingdon, Damascus, Meadowview (aka Greenfield), Grundy, Richlands, Graham, Pocahontas, Honaker, Lebanon, Pennington, St. Charles, Jonesville, Ewing, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Pearisburg, Pembroke, Radford, Galax, Hillsville, Rural Retreat, Dublin, Pulaski, and Dante. All of these schools I have missing scores from the 20's, 30's or 40's. Maybe you see an old yearbook at an antique shop or yard sale. Maybe you could take a picture of the football page with your phone and send.

It is three weeks ago

In 1939 it was the Eastern team's turn to come west. They declined to make the trip. In 1938 Narrows offered to go west but there were no takers. To be fair the traveling team's expenses were taken from the gate receipts and the eastern teams sometimes would not draw enough to pay the visitors expenses. You see in the east there were many bigger schools close by so the little schools did not have the fan base that the western schools had and still have. Now in the west to see big time class A school one had to travel to Rownokee or Dannyville or Leechburg.

These games were not mandatory. They were allowed but not recognized as true playoffs. Kind of fuzzy I know but it is what it is.

But I am also human and I make mistakes. I don't mind when mistakes are pointed out. That really was the reason I started putting the records on this site. So others with direct knowledge could proof read.

In Virginia it really hasn't affected the playoffs that much. When the playoffs started in 1970 there were three rounds built into the playoffs. As compared to WV which started playoffs in 1947 but only the top two teams were in the playoffs in WV until 1972. Then only four until 1979 when eight teams were in and then the current system in 1991. WV teams were at a slight disadvantage so far as playoff appearances but only slight because there were not nearly as many schools. the only school that you could say really suffered was Bluefield in the 1960's that had two undefeated teams and three 9-1 teams that did not make the playoffs. Then again there were no playoffs in Virginia at that time and Gate City and Appalachia had some outstanding teams in that decade. Oh yeah, and any school that had to compete against Powell Valley, Appalachia and Gate City for district titles. lol.
