Tazewell refused to sit those players and the game was not played and both teams claimed a forfeit. After the district investigated it was found that the players were indeed not eligible at Tazewell and Graham was awarded a forfeit.

Cousin had 94 yards on my stat sheet. Meade had 196.

He was great and his decisions on pass plays were awesome. While Cousin wasn't quite as impressive running the ball as I thought he would be his blocking was outstanding as he cleared the linebacker on most of Meade's long runs. I have been telling people at Graham that Meade needed to be the full time QB for the previous two seasons.

Andrew Lewis played an ineligible player in 1962. They weren't on probation, they had to forfeit every game. Graham wasn't "selected" state champion. They had the highest point rating of any "Division I" school. Out of state losses did not count and you had to play a certain number of games vs Division I schools to qualify. Graham earned the championship by the rules that were in place at that time.

There was a time when Bluefield was 3 to 4 times the size of Graham. But Graham put on their pads, laced up their shoes and went after the Beavers. They almost always lost and usually by a lot. Through the years Graham got a bit larger and Bluefield's enrollment is less than half what it used to be. Bluefield wins more often than Graham but not as much as in the past. Backups played on defense with 6 to go. It was still a scrimmage. Trying out new stuff and not showing some things, Having said that Bluefield's attendance at games other than Graham and Princeton has been very poor.

There will be 10,000 for this game with another 5,000 tailgating. The party starts around 10 a.m. Friday. It's an event in and of itself. Except for the crowning of queens, etc. It really is both schools homecoming on the same night. It's a wonderful atmosphere. Come on over and spend the day at a Graham-Beaver game. You won't be the same after. Lasts week "game" with Giles was not a game. It was a scrimmage. No one goes to scrimmages.

I know 2016 is just starting but I heard from a reliable source that Graham's 2017 schedule is set. They pick up the three "new" southwest teams; Marion, Lebanon and Va High (no news there). But they do indeed pick up Princeton and the other is Central of Wise.

Someday. Those schools are far away. I have no internet access to papers in those areas. Getting the information will require many trips to Richmond to the state library. I have some yearbooks but yearbooks are not reliable and I only use as backup.

Actually 91st game. I found one in 1913 that wasn't on the "list". I think it is now though. LOL. If Graham can keep the ball and control the clock they have a good chance. If they have mistakes; turnovers, penalties, lose composure they don't have a chance unless Bluefield makes the same mistakes.

Mount View did ok in football until the last ten years. They actually had good baseball teams. The exodus of almost all working class families is the real struggle in McDowell County. There actually are some jobs there but most who work there live in Bluefield, Princeton, Beckley and Tazewell. As a historian consolidations present a challenge. For football if 2 or more football schools consolidate then the football history for me starts anew. Ridgeview is a new school and they may pull on the fine histories of the schools in Dickenson County but no one is going to call them champions until the new school wins one or more. Clintwood's football championships were/are Clintwood's and not Ridgeview's. Just as Appalachia and Powell Valley's championship do not belong to Union. Now that doesn't mean that the new school shouldn't look to the great history of the area and promote if they want to but no one is giving Union credit for any championships until they win one.

I'm not sure Graham will have a problem with scheduling for football next year. They loose Narrows, Bland County, Galax, Grayson County and Fort Chiswell. They gain Lebanon, Virginia High, Marion. That means 2 games needed. If there is a problem the schools I would look to in WV would be James Monroe, Pikeview and River View. Maybe those schools aren't interested but who knows. I would also look to Virginia Schools like Rural Retreat, Patrick Henry and Chilhowie which will certainly need games.

I think Princeton falls into 3A territory with an enrollment of around 1100. But Princeton can't afford to play Graham right now because in WV you have to play 6 teams in your class which for Princeton is WV AAA and in WV Graham is AA. Due to Princeton dropping out of the MSSAC conference all MSSAC teams (and they are all AAA in WV) are prohibited from playing Princeton for 4 years (3 more). So Princeton could play Virginia schools but they would need to be AAA size by WV standards which is 933 students, Right now Princeton does not have the 6 required for next season (they got a bye this year due to existing contracts) so they need to find larger schools to play when they do their schedule for next year. There are only three AAA in schools in Southern WV; Princeton, Greenbrier East and Woodrow Wilson of Beckley. Princeton is prohibited from playing Woodrow Wilson. You see the difficulty facing Princeton in scheduling right now. If Abingdon's enrollment is over 933 I think Princeton would be open to home and home games with them if the schedules lined up.
