1 plus 1 sometimes don't =1 great school.The first year at Union we should have done a lot better but there was an adjustment period, we have improved every year and hope to continue that this year.Union high school didn't keep any of the shiny things from the past from APPALACHIA ORPOWELL VALLEY.The only thing that was kept was the slogan UNITED TOGATHER WE STAND ,DEVIDED WE FALL.Ridgeveiw has the talent(girls state champs)they have the great field, but something is missing, coach MULLINS is a good coach but they haven't turned that corner yet.I just wonder how many kids from HAYSI are walking the halls instead of playing?Mullins may be doing all he can ,but I would reach out to A.D. COLLEY and BEG for his advice and help

2-3 years away and 22 players ,1 coach and a bunch of cheer leaders,a stadium and some real loud fans.Grundy is a solid ball club but I have seen JLA inaction and it will be like a gunslinger and the town school teacher in a gunfight.Grundy is 8 or 10 transfers away from being good as Richlands

it will be a good game ,if Central holds onto the ball.I was very impressed with no. 2 but he put the ball on the turf a lot against Grundy.Union will continue their passing game tune up and let Owens get the ball in space

Several years ago Gate City had one of those teams that no one in the area could compete with, they would always put 35+ points up by halftime.The starters would be rested and the subs got a lot of playing time, but during the playoffs the starters had to play the whole game. The starters were tired and out of shape and it cost them playoff game or state game against Gretna????not sure of which but it was because they hadn't played 4 quarters the whole year.resting players is a good ideal but not at the cost of missing playing time.Mance is a great coach so he will do what he needs too, .

could anyone tell me about the flag that was picked up in the union vs gate city game?i saw a gate city lineman 15 yards down field and i thought that was the reason for the flag,but they waived it off.i really dont know what the call was or why they picked up the flag

Lets talk numbers,yes there are small schools that play larger schools, for that they get bonus points.Many larger schools play the smaller schools because of tradition(old lpd,schools or rivalries)I have never seen a smaller school which are successful (appalachia,pound, clintwood,haysi ,j.i.burton)ever say poor me ,we only have x-number of kids.they just get out there and play thier ass off.Do you think the kids care if you have 700 kid or 200, no they dont.Ibelieve everyone on this board pulls for the local teams ,if thier team is no longer in it.P.H is having a good season no doubt, so good luck, its time to play the game. IF IT COMES PLAYOFF TIME AND P.H. IS THERE WE WILL PULL FOR YOU AND THE OTHER TEAMS THERE FROM OUR REGION

Over the years Union (pv appy) have always played hard, sometimes the score didn't show it but they played hard.Friday game will be no different, after all GATE CITY is GATE CITY. They will double up Mitchell and crowd the line, with cut blocks to keep our line from their linebackers. Union will counter with shorter passes, and a surprise or two....if needed.I wouldn't look for no blow out, and yes their qb will have a good game,he gave us fits last year. They will send everyone long and he will make plays with his feet.Bailey Turner will throw a lot come Friday night.

From what I am hearing Dalton Mullins should take the rest of the year off,his injury at the first of the year was bad, but now its worse.A TARE OF THAT TYPE would cripple that young man,I am no DOCTOR and these are all RUMORS/STREET TALK (parent of another player),I just hate to see kids get hurt.Several years ago I watched ROBBIE DUNCAN at POWELL VALLEY play with a bad knee all the way to the state championship, you could tell he was hurting.

yep , Richlands will get plenty of rest in this one, the coach will have to have plenty of live drills in practice to keep the team in shape,oh by the way Richlands thanks for the thumping you put on Central.

that's a shame, maybe if the kids would have been healthy they would have packed the stands, UNION didn't have that problem, would love to see union /richlands play again in SALEM

The WOLFPACK NATION should be fine in the years to come,what I saw was a very young squad that plays hard and at times looks as good as any on defence.Rick Mullins needs to TALK COACH COLLEY INTO HELPING WITH THE OFFENCE,JUST HAVING HIM ON THE SIDELINE MAY BRING SOME OF THE HAYSI kids out. He is a master at getting a lot from very little, kinda like JIMBO ADAMS.The hard nosed kids are missing in the WOLFPACK, that's what APPALACHIA and TRAVIS TURNER,(COACH AUSTIN)BROUGHT TO THE TABLE AT UNION.Not that Clintwood wasn't tough but HAYSI has always had fewer numbers and a workman on a mission attitude.The fire is missing,great school and field, its just needs a little of the RALPH CUMMINS, COLLEY BLOOD SMEARED ON THEIR CHEEKS.

Turf has been discussed here at big stone gap for BULLET PARK....THE SAME ISSUE CAME UP, COST,MAINT. IMPACT ECT.The TOWN OF BIG STONE GAP owns the field and park,there is very little cost to the school system,the school agrees to clean up after the game and maybe the cost for lights during the games.Our town has elected to spend money on new bathrooms and seating(bought several years ago).Turf would be nice but I think it causes injuries especialy to half grown high school kids(RIDGEVIEW,CENTRAL)Seam to have more issues with injuries that say Union,LETCHER COUNTY KY,also had some season ending knee injuries.Turf looks great and you can sweep it off and play after it snows but for my money good old BERMUDA GRASS does a great job....as long as you don't mind brown grass after the first frost.

Central had a lot of players out,OL COLLINS,DALTON MULLINS, and the tailback.i was wondering if Central had a big fan base there?Here in BIG STONE GAP there was some people talking that Central was already throwing in the towel ,they just wanted the RICHLANDS game over, that way they could heal up and make a run for the playoffs.Maybe that is a good plan, but I don't know what that says to your kids when you give up even before you set foot on the field....just what I was told , and it may be a lie???anyhow I hear all 3 will be back this week.

Lets not say Zirkle isn't a factor,he has proven he can run the ball inside, and he has some wiggle in his hips.Owens is fast ,but that's a north-south fast,last week at Ridgeveiw not much yardage, but not many carries. What I would love to see is him on a jet sweep or at wide out and let him work the db's to death takind pressure of of Jenkins and Mitchell.Nobody will catch Owens if he gets a step, reminds me of JULIUS JONES with his speed .

Union is still beat up, I dont know if Zirkle will play this week or not,he should get healthy because there is still alot of football to be played.The Collier kid is an outstanding qb no doubt and he will give us fits , but i dont know who is going to help him,Gate City seems to be comming around , so i say28-7 union, oh yeah better watch 17 Owens he is super fast, and look for mitchell to have a great game, even with double coverage.
