Does the VHSL or VSGA select which courses will host the state tournament? It's a 2 year cycle, correct? Also, do you know when the host courses will be selected for next year? I'm primarily curious where Class 1 and 2 will be held.

Nice touch with the sub-par scores in red font

Two local high schools promote social drinking before navigating a 30 mile mountainous road. What could possibly go wrong?

Since 2019, Freedom has beaten Colgan by scores of 84-0, 55-0 and 84-20
-
A score of 112 to 16 sounds bad. A score of 14 Wills to 2 Wills, not so much.
-
Freedom led Charles Colgan 91-0 at the half
-
Both schools are relatively new due to the population growth in Prince William Co.. Freedom HS was formed in 2004, while Charles Colgan opened in 2016.

There's the rumor it's a coach. There's also the statistical probability. Judging by the Union team photo, I'm guessing half the adult male population of BSG is on staff.
-
It wouldn't be unprecedented to close a high school prior to consolidation (e.g. Ervinton shuttered 3 years prior to Haysi and Clintwood). Hurley deserves not to lose their school in the same unceremonious manner.
-
Absolutely. My friends and I would fight over who got to be the Raiders.

As most of you know, Buchanan Co will receive substantial funding from the US Army Corps of Engineers for flood mitigation, similar to Dickenson Co. I recall that part of the requirement would be to raze flood-prone buildings where a flood ring wouldn't work. If I'm not mistaken, the Buchanan Co Career and Technology Center qualified for a flood ring, while Hurley High would have to be" relocated". I believe some flood-prone schools in Dickenson were required to be demolished including Clinchco Elem. and Ervinton High. Will it be a requirement to tear-down Hurley High?

Agree. I never felt James Bolling got the credit he deserved. When he became HC, PV was a mid-tier program that had never won the district. After winning a state title, he handed the keys to the Cadillac to Phil Robbins the very next year.
-
I was always familiar with Barry Jones at PV but somehow missed that he went to GC. The great ones can replicate success with multiple teams.
-
It was a missed PAT by GC. A few interesting tidbits... The region received a heavy snow in the days leading up to the game. People in the Wytheville community pitched-in to remove the snow from the field and even brought in a helicopter from Bristol to help with the process. Grant Throckmorton and Robert Barcliff took very different life paths. After graduating from Tech, Throckmorton went on to dental school and is a third generation dentist in Wytheville. Robert Barcliff along with several others were convicted of a string of armed robberies of drug dealers and was sentenced to prison. https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/pittsburgh/news/press-releases/virginia-man-gets-nearly-six-years-for-armed-robbery-of-drug-dealers

Good memory. 2002 was the team that lost to GW in the semis, who was no slouch themselves on defense. 2003 was the state title team that beat Essex. I hadn't heard about the PV coach, but I'd be interested to know if that happened. As Goose mentioned, those late '90s Powell Valley defenses were pretty special.
