  1. I just had to look it up.

Origin of Fairmont Sr. "Polar Bears" Mascot (per Wikipedia)

Originally the athletics teams were known as "Ice's Men" in reference to Coach Frank Ice who coached the school's athletic teams from 1914 to 1920. In 1926 the Polar Bear mascot was officially established in honor of the coach. The class of 1972 donated twin polar bear statues that line the entrance of the school.

... Our AD set us up with the scheduling this year with the points. I know this because i was "in the know." He been trying to get out of Appomattox for 3 years.. He has applied for many different schools in the city and nobody wants him. Believe me this is not just me expressing this about him.

He is horrible...I cant wait until somebody swoops him up. It will be a relief.

Just curious, did Appomattox get points for playing Fork Union Military Academy? If so, how did VHSL calculate this opponent?

If we cant get Giles' train horn maybe our neighbors and friends from Gate City might just bring there horn. It would be a well appreciated gesture (hint hint wink wink). And also maybe our buddies in Lee county might just bring the cannon down too. Just some simple suggestions lol

I think every school in SWVA should contribute something to the cause.  Marion graciously offers Union a hurricane warning siren and a goat.

Galax has 10 seniors but two are kickers and another rarely plays. The coaching staff tends to cater the starting lineup to match-up with the opponent in certain spots but they typically start 6 seniors. But another half a dozen freshmen play significant minutes.

As has been stated previously, if your going to get Galax, now is the time. The group coming up is something very special.

Thanks for the clarification, sixcat.  Chilhowie has a good team that has improved each week, but I'm not sure if they're a contender just yet.  They only start 1 senior on each side of the ball with a highly talented junior class.

A Chilhowie upset is not out of the question, but I think we'll be seeing Galax-Riverheads Part 3.

Bullitt Park!  Best home field advantage?  I played at Appy. Walking down those steps in the metal tip cleats felt amazing. And enjoyed seeing it after I graduated. Play at Bullitt vs PV and won a state title there. There is indeed magic in the Park. What are your thoughts as to some of the best stadiums that give their team the home field advantage?

    I'm sorry, Ryan.

BearDawg, was that the '96 State Championship? That was my first visit to Bullitt.  I parked at the Baptist Church and sat on portable bleachers in the NE end zone.  The best thing that day was watching Appy utterly dominate Surry County.

The next best thing was watching the Surry County Band's half-time show.  It was awesome watching the distinctive style and tradition of the predominately African-American marching band.  At the beginning of the show, most fans were watching politely while a few idiots were mocking the band.  By the end, the band had the crowd on their feet and applauding in appreciation.

Per Roster from Saturday game Galax starts 6 Seniors and 3 Juniors on Defense.   Not sure that is a young Defense

That's definitely not young, rvsteer.  I may have mistakenly called Galax "young and inexperienced".  It was posted on the Galax@Narrows thread that the Maroon Tide had just 3 seniors along with a group of highly talented freshmen.

  7. GALAX

PROS:Skilled and talented on both O&D; well-coached; post season experience; ability to score in bunches

CONS: young and inexperienced; inconsistent team play week-to week; secondary vulnerable against the pass, lost Dougie Peoples

    CHILHOWIE

PROS: Skilled and talented on both O&D; 3 years of game experience for most starters; variety of ways to score (speed running, power running, mobile QB with some passing)

CONS: Team is 0-3 as the underdog in '17; QB consitently misses seeing open receivers; questionable play calling at times

I'm not the smartest guy around but I remember watching Appalachia play a ground and pound style football for years with much success. Coach Tom Turner would run the same play over and over until a team would stop it then he would just switch sides and run it again. Ball control and our stout defense will win this game.  Unions pass d is better than we have been accredited for too.  It starts up from with pressure but our dbs do a great job too.  Graham did over throw a few passes but that was because our d line was on there ass. And our dbs made two interceptions with something like two or three pass deflections.  I don't have the stats but I would say unions d has scored more than any other teams d has this season.

Basically strong d and ball control we win

Tom Turner's teams would go on those 80 yard, two-day drives that would wear down and demoralize a defense.  Then, those same players would turn around and play defense and demoralize your offense.

over thrown cause 10 didn't have time to throw like he did on everyone else and yes Richlands is the 4-7 team you'll ever see.  I promise you that.  I'm calling it now,  Richlands will be a 10-0 team at the end of next season.  I'm union first but Richlands will be back full force next season, 2017 belongs to the bears.

There should be an asterisk beside Richlands' 7 losses.  An absolutely brutal schedule masked a fine football team.

    Union- twice-13 wins and counting

    Blacksburg-12 wins

    William Byrd-9 wins

    Bluefield-13 wins and counting

    Marion-9 wins

    Graham-11 wins
