You said it. “Winning Culture” and VA High football definitely don’t go together.

VA High is would be a hard job IMO for a few reasons. First there is a lot more to do in Bristol than Chilhowie. Kids have other options and just don’t come out. In a town like Chilhowie that prides themselves of community support and kids want to play on the same field that big brother and dad and granddad did that makes a did difference as far as numbers go. Plus just not much to do. Second, it has to be hard to build a program when your sport plays second fiddle to a power house program that is sending kids to college. Why play football and get hurt when I can get my school paid for and play baseball. I don’t agree with it but VA High is not the only victim in this. Just look at Lebanon (baseball) and Gate City (basketball). Coach Crist is a good coach and does the best he can with what he has to work with. He lost a ton of seniors and is having to rebuild. The playoffs are out of the question this year but they will get back soon.

I hate that for them I was hoping they'd make the playoffs for  the first time in years, maybe they still will. Its neat seeing a young team come of age, and it sucks when petty plays affect their ceiling. I'm  hoping the pioneers  will get it together  in the next year or so until then I will just enjoy watching  them improve and take their lumps.

Good luck to the Bulldogs  the rest of the way.

If they win the games they should they will be in the play offs now that may mean going to bullit park or RV first round but they should get in. I feel for the Harris kid he one heck of a ball player

  3. GW has speed all over the place if GC can win the battle up front they have a great chance and they have to dominate the time of possession. A track meet is not good news for GC with this GW team but a 3 yards and a cloud of dust slug fest does. Slow the game down and there is a good chance GC has something to raise hell on this board about

Richlands wins , no upset in my mind , just some good football

Have you seen Radford play?? I havnt watched Richlands but Radford is  legit and if Richlands gets the win it’s a HUGE upset and Richlands straight up out coached a very talented Radford team. I am sure this may piss a few of you off but this has the potential to get ugly but that running back for Radford is hard to tackle and even though Mance does a great job taking away what you do best sometimes talent wins out

  5. Battles defense will be the best that PH has faced to date, even with the injuries, but the offense is having a hard time moving the ball. Hopefully for battle have had a good week of practice and have made progress but the game may be lower scoring than people think. Brown just needs to break 2 runs for scores and they will be fine. I hate to hear that about #20 though he’ll of a ball player.

  6. It should be a close game that cat Abingdon has running the ball is a load but knowing Richlands with a week to prepare that will have a pretty good plan for stopping the run. I say Mance has a master game plan on offense and he squeaks by to get #200. Richlands wins 18-17 and kicks the game winning 6th field goal as time runs out

  7. I’m not gonna lie I did not think the Adkins kid was worth all the hype when I first saw him. That was his freshman year but most guys that are D1 you tell at that age. Looking at him now.. WOW I’m able to admit when I’m wrong and boy was I wrong I look forward to watching this kid play on Saturdays I just hope it’s not in Knoxville I hope he is smarter than that

Appo was 5 scores better??????Richlands was up 2 touchdowns with 6 minutes left.  Put down the shovel and stop digging!!!

2016 Appo 42 Richlands 7 how can you be 2 scores up when you only scored once? I can’t speak to anything before 2015 season I wasn’t in the area. Calm down I’ve done nothing but compliment your team man.

You cannot compare De La Salle to Richlands.  That in itself is simply ridiculous....although I am sure Mance would salivate at the athletes found at such a school.  Answer me this....(1) In the last twenty years, when Richlands has the "winningest" coach in the area and a program you are comparing to De La Salle, why have they (Richlands) only won one state championship.  And..(2)...How have they only won one when they have found themselves in five or six title games and have only faced one team in the finals better than they were (Monticello...my opion of course...however, I will argue.)

I’m not at all calling them De La Salle you are right that is dumb.. the whole reason I posted what I did in the first place is to make the point Richlands problem isn’t scheme Mance is one of the best in the business when it comes to take so completely changing offense is absolutely crazy and shine light on why the spread works and so many people run it. As far as your 2 questions I wasn’t comparing them and I’ve only been in the area for one of those finals appearances and IMO Appo 5 scores better than Richlands that year. They have athletes far more athletes and that makes a world of difference.

@redtiger I’ve enjoyed the conversation. I like running the ball more than most people on this board I like prefer doing it with less box players. Even if a team has 9 in the box with 2 high (which makes no since to me but whatever) you still need 9 guys to execute vs  6 with high school kids I like my chances. I guess we will just have to disagree

  10. I was very impressed with RV up front but I havnt seen them since they lost 2 of their lineman. Wise Central has a sneaky good front 7 they are big but they fly around like crazy and I not easily blocked. I’m not calling for an upset but don’t under estimate this Central team I think it will be a close one if Atkins can do what he usually does then they win but this will be his toughest test this season for sure

What you do not understand is mentality.  3 yards and a cloud of dust wins championships.....If we had more dust against Appo a couple years ago (21-6 lead with 6 minutes left in 4th) Richlands would have won a state title.  In football, maliciousness beats creativity.....Union wore us out running four plays.  That is what Turner likes...that what his father liked....beating teams up physically....making people quit...winning through attrition.  From a coaching standpoint, I would rather beat you to death and make you quit...that is more satisfying...that is what you don't understand......it's not about blocking 10 people...it about whipping their ass until they backpedal every play.......

Trust me a understand mentality. There is not a better feeling in the world than looking across the line of scrimmage and seeing the that defense defeated I’ve seen that look plenty of times it’s awesome. You don’t have to put everyone in the box to do that. Just use tempo. Richlands has was 80 players on there team? Snap the ball with 30 seconds on the play clock and run the ball down their throat and throw it enough to keep the box thin that is how you wear a team down. 3 yards and a cloud of dust hasn’t won a championship in 2a for the last 4 years by the way. Even appo started to get away for the split back veer

Thats where you're wrong, and Union just proved it.  Lets say were trying to run in the A gaps, in the spread you're running Inside Zone against 4 guys (typically 2 DTs and 2 LBs) at the high school level, in the T you're running FB Dive against the same 4 guys. Plus your math is wrong; 5 OL + 2 TEs + 2 backs + 1 QB = 10 but the defense has to respect the pass and theyre not gonna put more than 9 in the box, if they go 10 then play action is there all day.

I get the concept of relying on fewer blocks to gain yards but what you lose is deception, its hard to be sure who has the ball when Union is running Dive/Belly all night, and unsure linebackers play flat footed and slow.

Spread offense may be fun to watch but you know whats not fun to watch? An offense that only scores 3 points.

Plus dont forget 2 TE, 2 Back, shotgun ...

How is the highlighted statement wrong sir? That is the point of the spread offense is to spread the D out..

As far as my math being wrong its not. Show me one team that has 2 high safeties and corners at 7 against a T back field with 2 TE’s because they are scared of getting beat deep on play action. Everyone is going to load that box up if they don’t thats not great coaching.

Some teams have bad games against good teams it doesn’t mean you need to jump ship on an offense. They dropped 30+ on Gate City. What they are doing is working is fine.

Putting the qb in shotgun does give you the zone read and what not back but there will still be 20 guys within 5 yards of the ball and 2 dudes out wide staring at each other eyes

I won't get into the debate of which formation is better because at the HS level, your personnel should really dictate that. And a good coach will adapt their offense to best take advantage of their players' skill set. Round peg, round hole concept. No one offense will work at every school. Richlands and Giles are perfect examples because they are on complete opposites of the spectrum. Giles has been running the single wing forever. Some years they're great, some years they're good and some years they're not. Offense is the same year in and year out. Only the players change. Everyone knows what they're running, but in the great years, nobody can stop them.

I agree 100% De La Salle won 151 games in a row running the split back veer I promise you they didn’t change their offense after that first Mance is probably the winningest active coach in the area if he thinks Richlands should be in the spread I would stand by that as a fan base and not want to change everything after a 3 point game

Here's a fresh idea for ya!  Get out of the Spread. You have two guys that are 6'5" or 6'6" (Whited and Cox.)  Put them at TE, load the backfield with your speed, select your best five linemen (that would include Ethan Phipps) and run the damn ball.  That was easy, take all the receivers off the field and make them running backs.

The whole point of the spread offense is to spread people out. It is a lot easier to to run the football against a 5 or 6 man box that is just a fact. Richlands has the ability to go 10 personnel and run for 200 yards a game because usually have one of the best passing attacks in swva because Mance does a great job with the pass concepts and 7 on 7 in the summer. I get the old school idea of you need 2 TE and a FB in the game or you can’t run the ball because that’s what swva is use to but here is a little math for you 5 lineman + 2 TE + 2 backs + 1 QB = 10 players guess how many defensive players you have in the box... 10 and you eliminate all the fancy Q runs that you can do out of the spread to account for that last defender you can block if you have a 6 man box. I would rather take my chances with 5 guys blocking perfect than trying to block 10 people any day of the week. This is all just my opinion though I’m just a young buck that likes a fast paced wide open offense that shows the coach’s creativity instead of 3 yards and a cloud of dust of running the same 4 plays over and over and over again..

  15. Guys there is no such thing as transitive property in sports. Just because team A beat team B and team B beat team C does not mean that team A beats team C every time. That’s like if Tennessee was able to pull off some upset against let’s say Florida. That does not mean that Georgia State would beat Florida. Anything can happen in this crazy game that’s why we play the game

I think PH has the easiest schedule in SWVA.

Facts! And that is why in the passed with the old playoff system when they had Humphrey Buchanan and the big QB they had they always got bounce early. I think those teams where better but they have a chance to challenge for the region with the brown kid who is hands down the best player on the field in every game they play. With that being said Coach Palmer finds a way in win this one easily on the cliff

Two years of having good seasons don't make you an elite program, especially in small schools where talent cycles.

Again the records speak for themselves.

But your correct  they dont have as much support , they don't have a state senator calling in favors with the VHSL to move a ballgame!!!!

They have the support no doubt my main point is that in their region and the fact the Coach Robinson keeps getting kids to come out and work their tails off they will continue to play into thanksgiving just like the programs I have mentioned will they be able to win it all I don’t know because Riverheads isn’t going anywhere either

Chilhowie is quickly turning into a Richlands, Graham, or Union type program in 1a for this side of the state.-- lol two years of success past the district level does not make you a Richlands and Union. Let's be honest here. Do you really think your kids are more supported by your community than PH, Marion or GW?

I get having pride in your program. But your not there just yet.

Yes that’s what I’m saying. I would put money on it that if you got to a Marion PH or GW games at 6:45 you would have time to grab a hot dog and get to your seat before kick off not the case at Chilhowie. Chilhowie also graduated 18 seniors and still rolling. But now that I think about it you are right they arnt the next Richlands Graham or Union because they don’t need tazewell or J.I. Burtons best players to be dominant
