  1. If Graham stacks the line they are going to be in for a long night. Tazewell have the passing attack to take advantage of that. I think you have to play a light box and make them run the ball to beat you. Graham is balanced only in the since that they pass and run attempts are close to equal. Anything longer than 10 yards down field is iffy at best. QB edge goes to Tazewell for sure. Both defenses are pretty solid but over all I would probably lean Graham there weak spot is the backend and Tazewell can make you pay there. This is going to sound crazy but I think this game comes down to special teams. Can Tazewell convert on the 2 point conversions since they dont seem to like to kick PAT. Will Graham block a punt? Will one of these teams return a kick for 6? If there has been a year to get Graham in the SWD over the last 6 year it is this year and Tazewell is the only school with the fire power to do it. It is sad however that due to power points even with a win they are still behind Graham in seeding. I predict we will have a rematch second round of the playoffs.

Never been to a chilhowie home game,  watching and listening to it on nfhs was interesting. Scrappy bunch though,  rye Cove kept it simple,  should be 100%healthy headed into twin springs later.

Chilhowie at home is definitely an advantage for them. They usually evaluate when the crowd gets into it. The place is usually packed too. I was there tonight and I think Rye Cove is easily the second best team in 1D I would expect a rematch with Honaker for the region championship. I would say that have a chance they have a pretty solid Line and 3 or 4 guys that run really hard including the QB which is dangerous when they are in 10 personnel. When it gets cold around thanksgiving the team that can run the ball and stop the run usually wins. I hope #16 is okay he was on the ground for a while in 3rd.

Hurricane Stadium's football/baseball field is notorious for its lack of drainage. I'd guess it's a thin layer of compacted topsoil atop a former hardpan river bottom. Anytime it rains, the stormwater will pond for days. A late fall rainy spell coupled with heavily-damaged turf turned the field into a quagmire for the Graham game. It's the worst field conditions I've ever seen. I used to have a pic, but it didn't transfer to my new phone.

Marion spent well over $10,000 to fix that problem with new French drains about 4 years ago. I think it was actually because of that graham game and the fact the infield turned into a pound after a light drizzle. They put French drains from left field down through where the short stops plays, one that runs from center underneath the away bleachers and one down the visitors sideline because of how bad it was at that Graham game. However in true Smyth county fashion they took bids and picked the cheapest option.. that option was a start up company that had no clue what they were doing. The result was the drains being too shallow, golf ball size rocks that just pop up on the infield, the grass above the drains being dead in March, and about a 6 inch deep rut where those drains where put in. It is an absolute miracle no one has broken an ankle in the outfield or in foul territory behind 3rd during baseball season. Oh yeah and the drains don’t work forgot to mention that

It was pretty bad even for spectators having to walk through the “field” to get to the bleachers. I’m sure there have been worse but I can’t remember one in recent memory.

That one was a mud bowl for sure. I think Marion vs VA High during the Covid season was like a 4 hour rain delay then they went out and played. That one may have been worst

WARNING: Smyth County's going to steal all your coaches once they read this.

    Baseball: Head-$2,060 + ½ Month Salary,  Assistant $1,262 + ¼ Month Salary

    Cross Country: Head $2460 , Assistant $1,262

    Basketball: Head $4,039 + ½ Month Salary, Assistant  $2,150 + ¼ Month Salary

    Football: Head $5,211 + ½ Month Salary $2,595 + ¼ Month Salary

    Golf: Head  $2,460

    Swim: Head $2,460

    Tennis: Head $2,460

Outdoor Track Head: $2,460, Assistant $1,262

Indoor Track Head: $2,460, Assistant $1,262

    Soccer:Head $2,460, Assistant $1,262

    Softball: Head $2,060 + ½ Month Salary, Assistant $1,262 + ¼ Month Salary

I would not hold your breath on that one. Smyth county base teacher pay is lower than surrounding counties. You almost have to coach multiple sports to make up the difference

Whoever wins secures a post-season spot,  VHS has more winnable games left but it will make power points between the 2 very close and be the difference of being a possible 5 to 8 spot in November.

    42-41 either way

I agree the only team VA high has played that has a losing record was John Battle and they won. Line pay leans VA High skill guys lean Tazewell. It depends on what kind of game is played. VA High should snap the ball with 5 left of the play clock and shorten the game and keep that offense off the field. If it turns into a track meet Tazewell runs away with it. Tazewell, VA High, Marion, and Lebanon are fighting for second in the SWD we will know more about who gets that spot 2 weeks from today

  7. 2D power points maybe

    team         Record  points  rider  avg

    1. Union     5-1        104      33   22.83

    3. Ridgeview 6-0     108      10    19.67

    4. Tazewell.    3-2     68       18      17.2

When do they start releasing the power points or did I miss them

I’ve got a spreadsheet just for sh*ts and giggles I know the rider points are right I’m not sure how they classify these out of state teams

  9. RV is 6-0 but has a grand total of 10 rider points off of those 6 wins. For the record that is the lowest total in all of 2D. Richlands is 0-6 and has 26 rider points. Strength of schedule is going to come back to bite the Wolfpack in the butt this week. I havnt seen RV play at all but I have seen Union and Union is so much better than anyone RV has played this year. I’m gonna say RV is not ready for this level of competition and union rolls.

Rye Cove has flashing stadium lights, a train horn, cowbells, and a digital down marker.

They also have the lead over  Lee

    RC 19 Lee 13

    7:58 3Q

Switch over to watch that just in time for rye cove to get a pick six got to hear the all the noise and see the flashing lights. Pretty crazy gotta be hard to play there right now

  11. I wouldn't call Abingdon a bad team they had one bad game (John Battle) and one game they played out of their mind (Gate City) Christiansburg was just the better team and it showed and Tennessee high was close until the half. I would say Abingdon by 21

I don't think LHS has the athletes to stop VA High. They just played Graham close, along with Ridgeview. With VA Highs new QB who can pass and speedster K Smith, the Bearcats will roll. Virginia High will control the line of scrimmage on both sides.

I do agree that VA high will control the LOS in this one but the new QB for VA High threw for 104 yard 88 of which where on one play. That play was a heck of a play by that kid but I think its too early to compare him to Reese O'Quinn or Creasy. The most impressive thing that freshman QB did against Graham was not absolutely crap down his leg against the defending state champs. I would give Lebanon the edge in the passing game by a lot in that match up.
