  1. Graham gets one against Union I’m afraid. Graham 28, Union 7.
  2. I don’t recall Appalachia fans whining about field conditions. I have seen Appalachia smack teams around in bad conditions.
  3. Doubtfully. Best case scenario is 2-8 and Lee losing didn’t help matters. Correct me if I’m wrong.
  4. Bands definitely have a place in a football discussion. In the stands they are part of the atmosphere for the game. You have Tennessee playing Rocky Top, Vt playing Carry me Back, GC doing some of their pep tunes, etc. If fans and cheerleaders are part of the conversation then so is the band. Second, these days you see more shows with less familiar music because those shows win. It hasn’t always been that way. When Graham’s band was under Mr. Brown they would win with Blues Brothers. I think (don’t quote me) that Holston one year did a Michael Jackson show and got a superior at state assessment. I can’t remember. I see GC winning this game if they can hang on to the ball.
  5. I think Gate City in a thriller.
  6. I wouldn’t doubt it if he’s one of the GC “fans” who have given the GC fan base a bad name around the area when GC is a powerhouse.
  7. Gate City is in a down cycle. Plain and simple. In the words of the late Lou Rawls “But there’s no ifs and buts or maybes!” This is going on for a variety of reasons.
  8. Gate City is in this CYCLE for a myriad of reasons. Lack of talent is one. I am certain the players try. I feel bad for them for all of this. Incompetent coaching is another. Quit expecting them to automatically be dominant again IF Reed gets the job. It is going to take time.
  9. And how do we know Reed will fair any better than Akers? How do we know Reed will even get it? Lack of talent is part of it. Poor leadership makes it that much worse. Gate City is capable of winning certain games. Unfortunately the coaching may prevent it.
  10. Be that as it may, as much as we enjoy football and spectating, we must realize that this is high school football and these are students. School board decisions must be made for the benefit of educating the students. Someone said that Scott County football wouldn’t be competitive until consolidation happened. Consolidation may be necessary in the future for various reasons and making a football team competitive should not be a reason. Just like many people from Appalachia had to be reminded that an argument against consolidation should not be because of a football team. Both BSG and Appalachia benefitted nicely. Consolidation in Wise County was needed. Without it the school system would be in worse shape than it is now.
  11. Traditionally this game has been tight. Last season was a slaughtering. I don’t think this goes back to the tough games of the past this season. Union 49, GC 13 Union gets some consolation.
  12. Congratulations to Ridgeview. I listened to the game and Ridgeview executed very well.
  13. Possible tropical storm force winds here in Roanoke on Thursday night. The Carolina coast is in big trouble.
  14. Why are they outside of the coverage area? Because they are neither FAR SWVA, part of the NRV, nor are they part of the Mountain Empire. Salem is in the Roanoke Valley. Why doesn’t GMan include the Roanoke Valley? Because he chooses not to do so. Period. You cannot rank Salem in these polls because they are not in the coverage area. You can rank Bluefield here because Southern WV IS part of the coverage area. You can have an opinion that Salem is better and many people may agree with you. You just cannot rank them here. That would be like ranking Florida State in an SEC power ranking.
  15. Ridgeview a lot, Central Not a lot or nothing
  16. As someone living in Roanoke, many people here do consider this SWVA. This is site covers mostly far SWVA, parts of the NRV, and Southern WV. Salem is not in that category.
  17. This reminds me of a pre-consolidation incident at a football game in 2009. It was JJ Kelly at Appalachia. Appalachia always entered the field by the goal post in front of the Dawg House. JJ Kelly fans and team created a fan tunnel at that spot. Appalachia felt disrespected and started walking through the tunnel and there was a confrontation between the teams. While it may have been disrespectful on JJ Kelly’s part, Appalachia’s team handled it the wrong way. Again, I am sure Union’s band director did not intend on anything wrong. I am sure it was a miscommunication that led to Union entering too early. But the moment the Richlands team began to do what they did, it was the wrong decision. Nobody was hurt to my knowledge but it doesn’t mean it was right. Someone could have been hurt. I saw the video and pictures. I wasn’t there. I can say that a lot of fans from Union, Richlands, and other fan bases were less than flattered by the team’s actions. I do think an apology should be made and we can move forward.
