Despite the 92-degree heat, optimism was high during Wednesday’s media day session at GC. According to head coach Jeremy Houseright, the Blue Devils have 60 players on the roster.

That figure is nearly double the number of players from the 2021 media day and includes several juniors who have been away from football for a couple years.

Fleming said the positive vibes have been building ever since Blue Devils held a nearly three-hour workout that began at midnight on the opening day of practice July 28.

“This is most momentum we’ve had since I’ve been part of this program,” said Fleming, who scored three touchdowns as a sophomore. “We’ve got more depth so we can give guys rest now instead of having to play both ways all the time.”

I saw the team picture from media day and almost fell over. I’m lookin forward to watchin this bunch.

  2. They stopped a playoff game at William Campbell when GC played there in '94 and the ref walked all the way over to the sideline and told our band to stop playing. That was the first and only time i had ever seen that happen.

You sorry Devil, long time no here from! hope you start making regular appearances again. I would love to have about 22 holdback for next football season! LOL!

lol....I check in from time to time. Had a rough couple of years but I'm gettin back in the swing of things.

  4. If the kids stick together coming up from middle school then they'll be back sooner than most expected. The current team plays their tails off and hopefully that will continue. I don't see us staying with Central very long though. Then again I thought the same thing when they played Abingdon  until they ran out of gas.

I'll never forget them showing up at GC one night 5 minutes before the game started. They got off the bus and walked straight to the sideline, proceeded to kick our hind ends, and walked back to the bus. I had nothing but respect for that bunch.

  6. I watched the GC/Union middle school game the other night (GC won 22-0) and was encouraged for the future. If I'm not mistaken, we have more on the middle school team than we do on varsity. Flag football had around 90 kids involved this year. So hopefully things will be rebounded soon. As for tonight, the kids will play their guts out. Hopefully both teams will stay healthy.

Man Appomattox would have complained and complained about Gate City and their train horn. I have also heard stories about the Big Blue Cannonball, if any Gate City fans wanna share their stories.

They also have a lot of the manual plastic air horns and cowbells.

I am not bothered by horns or cowbells. As long as you don’t blow them incessantly.

If cowbells and air horns are an issue, they would've stroked out over the Cannonball back in the day.

Any news is good news, when it adds bodies. may find the next all state linebacker just walking the halls.

I heard they had 90+ kids for flag football. Hopefully they'll move on to tackle next when they can and build this thing back up.

  9. I had it in April and wouldn't have known if I hadn't been tested. I had a low grade fever that hung around for 9-10 days  and a slight headache for a couple of days. My better half caught it as well and had a rougher time than I did but fortunately we made it through. She never lost taste or smell, but I did for about a month or so. My breathing for a couple of months after was labored though. After a few days and nights with a nebulizer, I was back to normal. My buddy at work that I've lockered beside of and worked beside of for 11 years caught it the same time I did and he passed away the day that I came back to work. I get my 2nd shot this Friday and didn't hesitate.

We live in MB (Carolina Forest area). Saw that story on the news last night but there was no mention of the AR-15.

They might've just wanted to add a little spice to their story. Not that they'd do that on Facebook....

  11. I read on Facebook where a family was riding around on a golf cart in Cherry Grove and a car came by them and started egging them. They also had a 5 month old baby on board. When witnesses tried to chase the car down, they allegedly pulled an AR-15 on them. I'll stick to Surfside for now.

Speaking of Surfside, swing by Bubba's Fish Shack and try the blackened Mahi. You're welcome in advance.

Okay, you gotta tell this story

We were walking out and some of their folks were standing along the fence and one said "if we had played the entire game like the 4th quarter we would've killed them". For those that remember OleTob, he had no filter or the strength to remain silent. So he said "yeah it's possible if we had played our 2nd and 3rd string all 4 quarters except for the 4th". One of them pulled it out of his coat as we were walking away but apparently he noticed the Scott County deputies at the end of the fence. Probably didn't help when my brother asked them "who do y'all play next week?". Good times.

I know this is meant in jest, but it brings to mind Magna Vista throwing the season finale against Bassett in 1996 to help them sneak into the playoffs over Graham.

Magna Vista had already locked up the #2 seed, and mathematically could not jump Gate City (10-0) for #1.  Graham (7-3) was the #4 seed in R4D3 with a Bassett loss, but Bassett (7-3) could vault to #4 in R4D3 with a win over Magna Vista, who was 9-0 and had not played a game closer than 9 points all season long.  So, Magna Vista and Bassett, being in the same district, could not play each other in Round 1.

So, Magna Vista colludes with Bassett and blows that game 28-12 (fewest points scored all season, most points allowed all season).  Bassett proceeds to get obliterated at Gate City in Round 1, the same place where Graham played them much tougher and much closer earlier that season.

That one season kept Graham from having a 20 season playoff streak from 1989-2008, in an era where it was significantly tougher to pull off than it is now (not to mention defending the state championship).  Graham lost 3 games by a combined 35 points to teams that had a combined record of 35-4, whereas Bassett got a gazillion points from one fraudulent game to offset a much weaker schedule.  At least Graham never lost to Bassett or Magna Vista again, and in fact pretty well crushed them in a few subsequent playoff meetings.

Magna Vista came to GC expecting to win and got smacked in the mouth also. First and only time in my life I've had a knife pulled on me trying to walk out of our own stadium. Bassett had no business being on the field that night. They were horrible. There was no way (without collusion) that Bassett could ever beat Magna Vista.
