You mean you are going to pick JM to win the title? Going out on a limb aren't you?
-
81 sub region is Radford, Glenvar, James River, Appo, Nelson Co & Alleghany. The other sub region is Patrick Co, Floyd Co, Martinsville, Dan River, Chatham & Gretna. It cuts down some on travel for the early rounds. There were other reasons but won't go into those. After the first two rounds are played the four teams left( 2 from each sub region) will play at Roanoke College with the highest seed from sub region 81 playing the lowest seed left from the Mountain sub region and vice-versa. Winners play for the region championship. It will probably be JR vs Radford in the finals. jmo

Radcat, the best 2 teams will probably go. JR and Radford will almost assuredly be the 2 teams. Once they get to the final of both sides of the bracket they will cross bracket then. JR and Radford will beat both teams out of the other side, probably Floyd Co and Martinsville if there is no upsets.

Martinsville goes to 17-2 Tunstall and comes away with a 53-52 win. Great rebound win after the Graham game Sat. Coach must have lit a fire in them somehow, they looked tonight like they did early in the year.

Which one was Morgan? Bradshaw was quick as lightning, but was really just an excellent athlete not a really a skilled basketball player. #30 looked like the second best player on the team to me. He was smooth around the basket and played good D against the Martinsville center. Bodied him up real well. Haven't seen Kirby miss that many short jumpers all year. Graham just jumped on us quick and Graves didn't let us make a run. When Kirby(#4 for the Dogs) fouled out halfway thru the 3rd quarter you could see all the air come out of the Dogs. All the credit in the world to Graham though, with a short bench today they just came into Cleveland Ave gym and smack us in the mouth.
-
Who's Mahave? Graham jumped on the Dogs early and Martinsville had no answer for Graves. He was unconscious today and was hitting from everywhere. He was like 16-18 from the foul line. And just as hot as he was, Martinsville was that cold. When Graves got T'd up in the first half and then the coach got one, the Dogs went to the foul line and missed 5 straight free throws. Just one of those days but the G-Men deserved this win. Can't remember the last time an opposing player dropped 40 on the Dogs at the Doghouse.
-
JR also beat 4A GW-Danville twice this year. When you go into Danville and win by 20 you're usually a pretty good team.
-
Graham plays at Martinsville this Saturday. Should be a good game for the G-Men to see how much they have progressed. The Dogs shouldn't have much of a home court advantage since they're not letting but about 200-250 people in the gym now.

Bandana, we've had a least 1 state championship in every decade since the 1950's, except for the 90's. Total of 15 state winners. Pretty good for sustained success. The Henry Co area in the 80's was unreal for bball talent. Martinsville with 5, Drewey Mason with 3, GW Carver with 2 and Magna Vista with 1 state championship, pretty good for an area as small as we are.

The common denominator in all this is the Martinsville fans. They were the vast majority of fans who came on the floor. Tunstall( not Dan River) had a few but not many. The feeling around here now is if one gets into a scrape they'll all come involved. Less than 2 hours after this happened at a restaurant about 2 miles away from the gym there was a shootout between two groups of people, left 2 dead and 3 wounded. Mentality around here is not what it once was, it's never 1 on 1, it's always a group against another group and usually ends with someone getting killed needlessly. It goes all the way down to the youth league basketball games, they have problems there, between parents where I have seen knives pulled on each other and law enforcement being called. Really sad.

His players were at their bench. If you had of been there you would have seen who the aggressors were. Tunstall coach charged the Dogs bench not to break up anything just to confront people. Then the entire Tunstall team left their bench and joined the fray. Thank goodness we had extra security there to get things under control. I've known Coach Adkins for about 50 years. He coaches with the same passion he played with. He won back to back state chapionshipships at Martinsville in 80-81 then played at Maryland, went to training camp with the Chicago Bulls, then was a assistant at Maryland before he came home to run his family business and coach high school at Carlisle and Martinsville. He's always been very competitive and high strung but he has the best interest of the kids in his heart. Things just escalated very quickly and got out of hand.

Oh and also this is nothing in comparison to the Martinsville-GW-Danville brawl about 6 to 7 years ago. Fans from both sides came on the court after a ruckus started under the basket on a loose ball. By the time it was over they had Martinsville police dept, Martinsville Sheriff and Henry Co Sheriff and state police responding. Even brought Swat team and vehicle because it spilled over to outside the gym. The Dogs played the next game without fans and ever since they will only let 800 in the gym.
-
Nope that was Jeff Adkins, Martinsville coach. Martinsville grad and played at the University of Maryland back in the early to mid 80's. Very high strung from an early age till now. Learned his theatrics from Martinsville legendary coach Robert "Husky" Hall and Lefty Driesell.

Really going out on a limb saying Union is better than Martinsville and DR. Dan River is way down this year and Martinsville isn't as strong as they have been in the past. Mavahi's best returning player transferred to Dudley HS in Greensboro and is averaging about 19 a game down there. Sure could of used him this year. Neither the Dogs or the Wildcats are state championship material, maybe could battle for a region championship but I think JR is going to win that. Radford may be down but they are always a threat in region.
-
I'd say JR should be the favorite right now. They've beat GW-Danville twice and a few other good wins. We have an older team, but not alot of game experience if that makes sense. We've beat Dan River by 20, Patrick by 40 some and McMichael (NC) by 10 but have lost 3 close games. If we could have taken care of the ball better and hit foul shots we would have beaten GW and Morehead. We go 6'6" 6'3" in the front court and our best 3 point shooter is 6'4. We are a typical Bulldog team, very quick and will battle to the end but I just don't know if they have the "it" factor to win region.
-
We've got a little talent but they are all new to the system since we didn't play last year. All our guys this year were on jv in 2019 so they are getting their feet wet on the varsity level. We are a play or two away from being 5-1 right now. Hopefully by playing teams like Graham, Staunton Dan River, Northside, and Morehead in the out of district games along with GW, Halifax and a very good Tunstall team in the district, we should be battle tested by tournament time. Record might not be good though.
-
What time is the Martinsville@ Graham game on Thursday? Martins ville comes into the game at 3-3 having lost to Northside by 8, GW-Danville by 3 and lost a tough one tonite against Eden-Morehead NC 70-68 on a shot from just over the half court line at the buzzer. Should be a very competitive game Thurs.
-
Radford's path out of the region is easier this year with Dan River and Martinsville not playing. Radford would probably still win, but that's 2 big obstacles out of the way.
-
Martinsville is not already defeated because of travel, and who likes to travel 2-3 hours to play instead of playing close to home. Martinsville will lose simply because they are not that good. Should have lost at home to the 9th seed Nelson and got a lucky break and scored at the buzzer to win. Won in ot against 4 seed Chatham who had beat them in the regular season then lost to Floyd. They have no size, dont shoot well, they are quick which is their best attribute. If Union is as good as most of the teams have been from that area over the years they will be able to name the score. This game is over at the half.

Sixcat, Galax will name the score against Martinsville. Not much football talent. The new coach does have good numbers out so far at off seasons workouts. Hopefully it wont be to bad.
-
Martinsville's biggest asset this year is speed and more speed. They scored very early in most games this year and they do have a never give up attitude. Came back late from 2 goal deficits to tie 6A Franklin Co and GW-Danville. They have a very talented team but are not unbeatable. Richlands I'm sure will be a very good test.

My wife graduated from Elon. It's a very good academic school, beautiful campus and great facilities. Brand new convocation center for basketball opened this year ( seats between 4-5 thousand). In the CAA which is a very competitive conference, and right off I-40 between Greensboro and Burlington. Should see alot of playing time early in his career. Alot of boxes checked.

And Martinsville beat Graham in Bluefield by about the same margin. I guess that's what he meant by saying it was a 50-50 whether they were better.
