After the muffed punt you could just see the heads drop knew it was over then

I watched it up until Central scored in the 4th on a counter. The DB from Union came up…and then didn’t even bother to lay the hit. Lol. That game is probably one of the worst 3 games I’ve seen out of Union since consolidation.

Central to me just looks to be be the better team.  No idea how Ridgeview beat them.  Didn't learn much about central D because we've not had the ball

Central has been better with fundamentals and discipline for sure. It’s not even close tonight in that regard.

Union doesn't want to be here. Thought they would just show up and get the W. Norton warriors said not tonite.

Looks to me like they’ve just laid down. Up to this point, they have nothing positive to take away from this one. Not a single thing.

As a kid in BSG, the Battle of the Boot was a LEGIT rivalry. Lee always had some MONSTER linemen and were more than capable of beating PV.  From 1991-1996, Lee beat PV three times. PV won two state titles during that time (94-95). They beat the 1994 state title team. They ended a 25 game win streak by PV in the 1996 opener. Made the D4 (4A now) final four in 1997. They were a powerhouse. But then they fell apart and started to run off every coach who managed to win. Since that run that ended in mid 90s, Lee has beaten PV/Union once, 2002. They've went 1-27 against Big Stone since then. A shame.

The first two meetings between PV and Lee (89&90) were both won by PV, too, but weren’t exactly close. They were for a bit, but think the finals in those were 47-26 and 30-13, respectively.

I understood wanting to back Union up but said to those sitting with me Ridgeview just cost themselves 40 seconds and could probably only win the game with a blocked punt when they accepted that penalty.  Their defense was solid but I understand the concern of trying to stop Union on the next two plays as well.

In that case, all consideration has to take into account the clock first. Once it hits zero, nothing else matters.

Yep. That's why I always liked the original one. Only helmet that could compete with it was the TW one from last year or year before.

Union’s helmet logo should always use the contrasting colors with the shell color. If the shell is going to be blue, make the logo orange and white. If it’s going to be orange, make the logo blue and white. If it’s going to be white, make the logo blue and orange. That would drastically improve the helmet, imo. Just keep the blue facemask the same with any combo.

Not to take away from the Union/Ridgeview & Richlands/Tazewell games but how about them Holston Cavaliers. They're solid for a team that lost a lot from the Spring. Not sure if they're on Galax's level but definitely a team to watch out for going forward!

Akers is looking pretty good at Holston.

The run calls in the fourth quarter were baffling. As a Union fan, I was pumped every time RV ran the ball regardless if they gained yardage or not. It kept the clock running, kept Beavers out of the play and played into Unions strength. I was surprised when they called runs, especially later inn the 4th

The run calls were nowhere as baffling as the accepted holding penalty on Union’s last drive when the RB ran out of bounds. Sure, it would have been 2nd and 5, but Ridgeview still had a TO and could have called it after the next play setting up a 3rd down instead of having Union in a 2nd and long with no time outs left. That 45 seconds lost there pretty much ended it. If you’re Ridgeview, you can’t be handed a free time out in that situation and hand it right back.

I'm sure the four that survived the hep C and gangrene have fond memories

It wasn’t as bad as people now romanticize it as being. Mostly just a lot of mud and little grass…sometimes with some sawdust-like something mixed in.

Yeah my fav place in the world, a field that resembles Burt Reynolds' crews practice field in The Longest Yard lololol

I'm glad Burton back on schedule but can't understand TW, at all.

Absolutely loved playing at Riggs...most of my teammates back in the day did, too. Always was a great atmosphere for football.

I'm starting to think Union is like Galax. You play better at Mitchell Stadium than you do at home. Just my observation........

I would venture to guess that Graham is the only team in the area who would prefer to play Union at Bullitt Park than at home.

  12. It’s a tough situation for sure. But, covid affects kids, too. A couple days before the Burton/Twin Springs game, a student from Twin Springs died from it. When you put it in that perspective, a game isn’t very important. It sucks that kids’ participation in sports is being impacted, but it is what it is for now.

See this is this biggest problem on this forum. People can't even playfully critique anything or give their opinion without someone taking it WWAAYYY too personally and getting upset. You're getting all worked up and making this into some huge ordeal because some people think having a parade for winning one regular season game against a rival school is kinda silly or corny. It's a valid opinion! Just as valid as someone who thinks that it's great and the community deserves it. Both opinions equally valid and it doesn't mean you have to take personal offense to it.

EDIT-I feel like I really did try and respect that POV and try and consider it while I posted bc we've never had any issues and generally get along. But it seems like I wasn't afforded the same decorum.

You made the point about Union, some could consider that silly or corny. That's fine! To some, it probably is and I wouldn't argue that. It's a little different, but somewhat similar in premise so I can absolutely see someone feeling that way.

I was kidding, I'm not making it seem like a big deal, but in the original edit, you used the word 'pathetic'. That's a pretty strong word to use.

I don't want to send a PM because words can get twisted and people can misrepresent what is said. I'm not saying you would ever do that, tbh I don't believe you would ever do that, but I think more people should see the point Im making about people being unable to share their thoughts without someone taking it very seriously and getting offended. It's twice today it's happened just to me.

Compared to the old LPD forum circa 2006, this forum is tame and serene. Haha

  14. The NFL and college rule allowing the QB to throw the ball away doesn't reward the defense for out-scheming the offense.  Now that you can watch full games in decent quality on YouTube, check out any of the NFC or AFC Championship games or Super Bowls prior to the rule change and the difference is clear.  In those games, you are guaranteed to have a pretty good QB and decent to excellent defenses...and when the defense out-schemes the offense, that QB has a choice to make and has to make it quickly.  At the very least, it forces the QB to either take a sack or make a high risk throw that the defense can at least make a play on, rewarding the defense's strategy.  I like the HS rule.  It's pretty much the same as the old NFL and college rule.

I agree I think.  If the county gets, let’s say for simple math, $10 per student but it costs $20 for the county per student then just charge the difference.  I don’t see how that would be too big of a problem, seeing that the surrounding Tn schools would charge a Va student to come there.  I definitely agree, if a teacher works at the school then there would be no fee, or if the parent works in Va. Also, if the student was previously enrolled before a change was or is made, then that should be waived as well.  I truly doubt it’s anything to do with “stay on your side of the line and we’ll stay on ours.”  That’s childish to even think that.  I’m sure Scott is one of the lowest in pay in the state so maybe this could help compensate some of the staff and coaches.  I don’t know if it could be used for that I’m just throwing that out there.

That’s the thing...for simplicity sake, think of it like this: For every $1.50 the county spends on a student, they get $8.00 in state and federal funds. The caveat is that the locality has to spend that $1.50 in order to get those funds, and the BOS is allocating the $1.50 to the school system,  but the school system itself gets the $8.00. The total money is spread across the school system to pay employees and operate the system...not just at one school, but all schools in the district. So, if the county loses kids, they save some money of their own, but they lose out on a ton of state and federal money that is desperately needed in order to operate the school system itself.

Its going to be an interesting time.  I may be really happy that I lost the election now.  The BOS cannot enforce anything the School Board does not agree to though.  What will be very interesting is seeing how many try to migrate over with North closing.  A lot of folks in the TS communities posed this question to me about tuition as they feel like tax money is being wasted on out of state students that only benefits GC.  Right now, those TN students bring in a ton of state tax money to the Scott School System.  Yes it is costing the county a little extra money but if all of those TN kids left and went back to TN the system would lose just shy of 3 millions state and federal funds.

With the last part, you hit the nail on the head.  The county receives from state and federal funds more than 4 times the money it invests per student.  So, for every student that leaves because of a tuition fee, the school system will lose around $8500.  The county's net loss would be around $7000 per student.  My understanding is that the BOS pays the local fee, but doesn't see any of the state or federal money because it is sent straight to the school system.  If that is the case, all the county's taxpayers are still seeing a return in money for their school due to the state and federal money being a much larger amount than the local share...plus, all the state and local funding is sent to the school board, not the individual schools.  But, because of the way the money is accounted for, it's hard to explain that to someone who doesn't understand the way the school system is funded to begin with.

  17. I feel that district champs should automatically get a playoff birth. That way, every team would know from day 1 if they win their district they get in. If a team fails to win their district, it's their own fault...regardless of how many good teams are in the district. Football used to be different from every other sport in that regular season games could sink you in a hurry. Sometimes there were no second chances. Now days, everyone gets a second chance...and a third chance, and sometimes a fourth chance with the bloated playoff system we have now. Every team should have a defined path from the start, though, and not have to solely rely on a flawed ratings system, imo. Settle it on the field at one point or another for every team...if it's settled by a regular season game for the district title, so be it.

5-5 should be min. wins , 6-4, 4-5-1, and 7-3 , 8-2, were our records while I played , no playoffs because only fist champ went. Set the bar high , let the young men know success is hard, prepares them for life. I know I know , Appalachia, and Jonesville were 5-5 but that was after the had division 1A , etc but they were at least .500. Sometime it’s time to break out the basketballs

The difference is that Appy and Jonesville both made it in when the Regions only took 4 teams per division...and there were only 3 classes with 2 divisions each. So, then it would be 4 teams per region x 2 divisions per region, giving you 8 playoff spots per region for divisions 1&2 combined. So, 16 teams statewide qualified for the playoffs in division 1 and 16 in division 2...if you multiply that by 3 classifications, after the regular season, only 96 teams in the entire state made the playoffs in classes A, AA, & AAA combined. Now you have 8 per region per classification...and 5 classifications. The math in that would be 32 teams statewide per classification times 5 classes...which gives you 160 statewide. So, yeah, the playoffs are watered down now and could be improved by setting the number at no more than 6 per region per classification..or better yet only 4.

Ryan on CW's schedule they aren't showing the game broadcast tonight, but have it listed for Saturday morning at 11:30.  Is this right?

It is to be broadcast on WEMT Fox 39 according to the listings.

Union was flagged for 15 yard personal fouls x3. GC was flagged once & it was part of offsetting fouls which didn’t cost any yardage. Union’s final & most egregious personal foul gave GC a first down that kept them within striking distance. ⬆️ That’s from the film; can’t speak for anything anyone might have seen in person.

The offsetting one was the one talked about above. It’s football...from time to time, players sometimes lose their cool.
