  1. Very nice job! Thanks for the shout-out concerning Carroll. They are in a difficult situation. Hillsville is very difficult to get to from certain areas of the county. Especially those areas around Fancy Gap and across the New River. Travel across the New River to get to Hillsville requires going away from Hillsville for several miles, crossing the river and doubling back. I don't envy Turners chore but think he is well suited to get the job done. It will help they are now in Class 3.
  2. I've never been a fan of using transitive properties on sporting events. Teams match up differently. But if we're going to use the transitive property for this game, Grayson thoroughly dominated a pretty good Alleghany team while Carroll struggled somewhat to beat a Patrick County team that has 4 wins in 5 years. With 3 of those 4 wins coming against a North Stokes team that hasn't won a single game since 2015. Welcome to the board!
  3. Hopefully, not in my mother's basement. I feel for you if you are! 😉
  4. Turner still has a lot of work to do and Grayson returned virtually the entire playoff team from a year ago.
  5. It’s funny how pitcher win/loss records are one of the least valuable stats in baseball, yet all anyone talks about come contract negotiation time.
  6. How does Jacob deGrom retain sanity? He has an ERA of 1.68 (1st in MLB), a WHIP of 0.98 (5th in MLB) in 182 innings (2nd in MLB) with opposing batters hitting .208 against him (9th in MLB). And that's good for an 8-8 record!?!?! I wouldn't have thought that possible before this season. deGrom has held opposing teams to 1 or fewer runs 9 times this season. The Mets are 0-9 in those games.
  7. Carroll's future depends on how effective Turner can be in getting the community to buy into the dedication required to compete at a much higher level. Carroll has always had talent but has lacked a sustained dedication to weight lifting, film study and off-season programs. I think Carroll being about as difficult to navigate as any place you will find in this part of the country adds to the difficulty. Given many parents travel for work, it's a daunting task. In my opinion, if they could figure out a way to provide transportation to kids who live in parts of he county not surrounding Hillsville, they will have a much better chance at succeeding.
  8. I didn't mean to anoint Galax in any way but the changes, especially on offense, are exciting. Having two very capable QB's is also a departure from past Dixon led teams. I also believe the feel around this team is vastly different than in recent years. In my opinion, we have a bit of "addition by subtraction" where some real knuckleheads have graduated and aren't bringing a negative vibe to the program, school and community as a whole. The kids representing this team are good kids and easy to root for. That hasn't been the case for the past couple of years! The defensive changes are a bit tougher to read. It's still a base 3-4 look but very aggressive in the middle with pressure coming from anywhere at any time. I think it will help the DB's given opposing QB's and WR's won't have as long to make a play down field. In years past, Galax DB's have had to maintain coverage for far too long. If they can get the amount of pressure of Glenvar's QB they did Friday night, they should be able to get pressure on anyone! By the way, Glenvar's QB is huge!!!!! The preview piece I saw on them suggests he is 6'-6" tall and 240 pounds. He was a load to get down!
  9. Zone blocking schemes in a power running game are one thing. Dixon is better at coaching the OL than anyone in our area. He's been doing that for years. Seeing Galax throw the football 52 times to 13 different receivers in two games (counting benefit against Floyd) is a dynamic shift in philosophy for a Mark Dixon coached team. Multiple formations with very little of the single power back set we're used to seeing from Galax. Those who know me on this site, know i'm not prone to hyperbole. I'm very much a realist who has been saying Galax needs to be more balanced for a number of years now. With that said, this Galax team is deeper and more talented than any I can remember Dixon having with speed and athleticism in spades. Couple that with two very gifted QB's and a shift in offensive philosophy to get the ball in the hands of that speed in the open field, it could be a special season. I'm more excited to see this season play out than any in recent memory.

  12. Thoughts on Mark Dixon completely changing the Galax offensive philosophy in favor of an RPO heavy spread attack?
  13. Galax goes 80 yards for a score. Glenvar leads 28-24 with 5:01 left.
  14. When someone is used to mark time, they are usually pretty special at what they do. Athletics as a whole in Galax are defined by Pre-Dixon and Post-Dixon! I will let others research the lack of athletic achievement prior to his arrival in 2010 compared to what has been accomplished since his arrival. And it's not just centered around football!

  17. East Chapel Hill cancelled football for 2017. Neighboring Cedar Ridge has also cancelled football for 2018. East Chapel Hill has 44 wins in school history and no playoff history whatsoever. Chapel Hill is 2-13 lifetime in the postseason and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2008. Cedar Ridge hasn’t fielded a competitive team since 2007. Its not demographics in the Chapel Hill area. They haven’t valued football in that region in forever!
  18. Fort has some nice talent coming up right now. And a lot of them.
  19. The School formerly known as Shawsville. Montgomery County along 460 between Christiansburg and Salem.
  20. Galax beat Floyd 39-19. Galax is young in several spots on the field and it showed at times. Two turnovers inside the 10 as a result of players being out of position. But that’s what these games are for. Galax has a lot of talent though with more depth than I can remember Dixon having in his career. Not much drop in talent when the Galax reserves entered the game. Floyd was big up front but got pushed around all night by the smaller Galax linemen. Floyd did have 57 players by my count. Dixon has developed a passing attack. First time I can recall a Dixon coached team throw more than run. They have a decision to make at QB. Both played extremely well.
  21. I know better than to get involved in these "territorial pissings" but a few of these comments smack of racism and I'm reasonably certain Thomas Jones isn't one of the posters! Says more about the poster than the subject of the post!
  22. Now that you mention it, I haven't seen a single letter jacket in Galax in at least a decade!
