They lost by 2 or more td's 5 times that season...one of those defeats was a 35-0 pasting by gate city, and richlands and grundy each beat t-well by 3 td's.... Talent-wise, that 1986 team was as good as any of the other recent state champs (89 and 95 Graham, 92 and 06 Richlands) though I'm not sure they would win head-to-head against all four because of coaching. The 86 team tended to play down to the level of their competition. I can think of several players off that team that played college ball: QB/FS Jesse Davis (full ride to VT but didn't qualify; played at Lees-McRae) HB Quentin Reed (ETSU) HB/DB Jeff Lamie (Ferrum--played mostly baseball but played at least a year of football I think) C/DT Chris McCall (Clinch Valley) OT John Blankenship (Ferrum) DT Stephan Holloway (VT) DT Robert Viney (Hampton) OT Robbie Colley (punter at VT, didnt play OT there) Also, DE Donnie Mitchem made the coaches' all-state team but I don't think he played college football Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
