Montcalm and Pocy will both be closed in due time. they are the only public Single schools left in mercer and tazewell county. Mercer will bump bluefield up to AAA possibly and Pocy will keep Graham from dropping to A.

Wrong. Even with Montcalm's enrollment, Bluefield would only be a larger AA school.

If all the kids from Pocy went to Graham, Graham would still be well below the A/AA cutoff in VA. And as someone said, many of those students will go to Tazewell and even if all went to Tazewell, they'd still be below the A/AA cutoff as well.

Could someone post the attendance of Bluefield High from the past 5 years. It seems to get smaller every year.

Actually Bluefield's enrollment jumped by 13 students in grades 9-11 since the last SSAC classification cycle four years ago in 2003. Bluefield's total enrollment last school year in grades 9-12 was 658. And Montcalm will not be consolidated into Bluefield for a few more years at least. I'd say it won't happen any earlier than 2012.

Seems last board meeting the subject was brought up again about closing Pocahontas. This time it did not have any objections with the closing. Could it happen this time?

[/ QUOTE ]

It "comes up" all the time...the people of pocy will never let it happen...even though it may be the best thing for the kids...heaven forbid they have to ride a bus to Graham or Tazewell, in order to get more opportunity within the curriculum.

Pocy should have been closed 20 years ago.! It is a drain on the taxpayers of Taxwell county!

[/ QUOTE ]then move.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry, but it's ridiculous for the county to spend the money to keep a school that small open. How much does it cost per year to do so? If the people of Pocahontas want the school so bad, maybe they would be okay with only THEIR property taxes increased to subsidize it.

The point is there are small communities everywhere that would love to have their own high school but it is not economically feasible. My old elementary school was consolidated years ago due to lack of enrollment.

It's nothing against the town or the people of Pocahontas.

Pocahontas needs to be shut down. Do they even have 100 students in the school? No offense to anyone at Pocahontas or any students but like said before paying taxes to keep it open is stupid. Shut it down and let them decide where they would like to go to school at. If they want sports Graham or Richlands.

Yeah that makes sense...send them an hour down the road to Richlands.

Since you all know so much, how much would it save the county if they shut down Pocahonats? They would still have to place all of the teachers in other positions...or would they just let them all go and let all of them be jobless. Then the cost of transporting the students all the way form Abbs Valley to either Graham or Tazewell wouldnt be cheap either. You all act like you know so much about the finances of Pocahonatas High School and TCSB...so how much would it save? I'd say shut down Tazewell and ship them to Graham or Richlands... That would save a lot more money.

There have been numerous independent studies done on this and all have come back saying to shut down Pocahontas. The TCSB just can't pull the trigger. The numbers have been crunched many times, and all the crunching indicates it would be cheaper to send the kids to Graham and Tazewell instead of keeping Pocy open. The school is nothing but a drain on the taxpayers of Tazewell Co. The TCSB needs to grow a pair and do what's right for the entire county, not 100 or so kids...

In most cases when a school is consolidated, the school board attempts to reassign the teachers, administrators and staff to another school first, usually to replace those who retire or leave the system.

And yes, is some cases teachers and staff are let go. You can't keep a school open just so teachers will have a job.

Even though gas is expensive, transportation costs would still be much lower than the costs to operate and maintain the building, fund the sports teams, etc.

The reports have been in the BDT on several occassions over the last 10-15 years...most recently last year...
