Bluefield-Graham post-game discussion.

I've been listening from about 400 miles away, so take that into consideration.

Problem #1 for the Beavers was the lack of offensive line size. If I heard it correctly, they're decent size (211,216,226,230,203), but Graham was huge up front on offense (300,285,230,233,285). Graham ran the ball really well, two guys in the 90-100 yard range, one guy in the 70s. Bluefield's leading rusher had less than 50 yards.

Sounds like the last play was controversial...the Beaver coaches went after the officials after the game. I understand they were the VHSL officials.

Bluefield fumbled 4 times, lost all 4. Definitely a game-changed. Gotta hold onto the ball.

What happened to Bluefield's kicker from last year? He could have won this game at the end, as I think they were worried to let Cole try a FG to win it.

(edit #1) Bob Redd is totally AWFUL on the radio. Can't stand listening to him, but he's the only link I have.

I didn't see the game but I've spoken to several people who were there and they said Bluefield got screwed on the last call. Cole lunged forward and was in the end zone, as several Bluefield players signaled TD. The officials let the rest of the clock run down while standing there, then took off for the dressing rooms after a Graham player emerged from the pile with the ball and took off running downfield. Rather disappointing to say the least.

I would offer my congratulations but I'm not really sure whether to congratulate Graham or the officials for the victory.

All I'm going to say...

The officiating was HORRIBLE...

Now...

WHO WANTS SOME CROW????

All I'm going to say is to all the players from BHS that read this site I want to say I am proud of your effort tonight. You all did not give up. Will & the entire offense kept their composure and mounted a beautiful drive.

I thought the officiating was pretty decent! The game was well played by both teams. Beaver came up a little short. Why run the ball up the middle? Could have had time for a couple of plays at the end of the game!

Everyone is still probably stuck in traffic. Beats all I have ever seen.

Why in the world did Freddy not kick the field goal? The game was over, after that first one Cole was solid I don't understand. Maybe he remembered 2003........

Sounded like a great game...Wish i could've been there to see that one...

Conrats graham

this is why 10,000-14,000 showup for this game every year. incredible game,. 10 seconds left and bluefield runs former graham qb up the middle from the 1yd line and he did not cross goal line {no O-line push}as time ran out . ref's should have made some gesture but they just left field. no time for another play and another page in a fantastic rivaly

Actually the White Hat did make a signal ending the game as he was walking through the pile of players in the endzone on his way to the locker room.

BTW, did they have to call in the National Guard to escort the officials out of the stadium safely...that new locker room at the scoreboard end may not be such a good idea...long walk to the car with an angry mob...

That's just a plain sorry statement. If Cole crossed the line (and I don't know either way, I'm at the mercy of the official call), then I have no trouble giving hat's off to the Beavers. I find myself holding too much respect for the efforts of both teams to bury those efforts with comments about the final call. The record will show how it ended, but I don't see how anyone who was there can't give all the credit in the world to both squads.

Both teams pretty much threw their strengths at the other, and neither team could really match the other's strength. So Bluefield's speed, athleticism, and passing game traded punches with Graham's brute strength and flashes of speed. And dog gone it, it made a pretty darn good fight.

I've never seen a game in which you could go back and pick so many plays that could have swung the game. Graham's dropped interception, Bluefield's dropped TD, Graham falling so close on that last 4th down, Graham's punt coverage giving up on a ball they must have thought was going out of bounds, Bluefield's sack and fumble for a TD, Graham's crucial penalties that stalled drives, Graham not getting the snaps back to their very capable kicker, and it goes on and on.

I myself wonder what would have happened if about 1/3 to 1/4 of Lane's carries had gone to Harris. Dude takes the ball wide open. SWD foes will hate this guy.

Bluefield will be a good team, what happens with their line against physical teams will determine how good. They have got the skill position players that can hold their own with anybody.

I think time will tell how good Graham may be. They are not all that yet, but could get real good. They have proven to be couragous so far if nothing else.

I must ask this in closing. Does anybody know what the brown object was that the referee made Coach Bradshaw remove from the field? It was brown, picked up with a towel, and went straight to the trash can. ?????????

I was on the phone with a friend, who was at the game, and he said the Bluefield coaches were trying to chase the Refs into the locker room and the polce had to block the door. Pretty crazy ending to a great game. Congrats to Graham on the win.

Great game tonight! Both teams played a little sloppy but hard and with alot of heart! Just one team had to win. Will go down as one of the best games i've seen in this rivalry. Congratulations Graham on the win and congratulations Bluefield for not giving up after you were down by 9 points. Both teams have some things to work on and will have good seasons in my opinion. Again congrats Graham and good luck the rest of the season! I will be pulling for you.

Good assessment of the game, and true. Even down to the last call, I wasn't there I don't know either so we must go with the officials call. Bluefield has a fine squad, and will do very well in 2008, I wish them the best of luck. Great to get the win tonight, especially after looking like we were going to lose in the final minute.

I was at that end of the field and Cole was in the endzone. I thought that you couldn't fumble or be stripped of a ball while in the endzone, that once the ball crossed the plain it was a touchdown. Cole was on the bottom of the pile, his whole body in the endzone and after the clocked had ran out while the refs searched around, a Graham player came up with the ball from being down in the mess as Bluefield players and fans celebrated. I was at a loss for words.

Either way, the game shouldn't have come down to this. FAR TOO MANY Bluefield penalties hindered them. If I guess correctly there were somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 false starts. Bad snaps didn't help either. I was also surprised to not see the flexbone offense at all. Bluefield had ran that in their scrimmages and at practices and had been successful so it caught me very off guard when they didn't use it. The Beavers hurt themselves.

I thought Graham played very well. Their defense played well against the Beavers spread attack and their offensive line looked much improved. Although I still think they have some things to work on up front, I think they performed a whole lot better this week than they did against C'Burg. Kyle and Dominique once again seemed to make their own runs. I remember in the 4th quarter, I believe, Harris took a hand off to the right, completely redirected and made about a 9 yard run out of it. He, Lane and Scott all played very well.

Congrats to the G-Men and the Beavers on a well played game. This is why this rivalry in ranked #8 in the country.
